Answer
You can expect to be offered anywhere between 10% and 40% of the itemâs âfair market valueâ.

So, if the TV was $1000 new it's "fair market value" is less now - maybe $700?

And 10-40% of $700 is $70-$280 - so maybe what you'll be offered will be somewhere in that range?

can I use power bar with tv/cable box or will it delete cable signal?

I heard you can save 60% by using power bar with tv and digital cable box. My husband says he tried it and lost cable signal briefly when he turned off the tv/cable so doesnt want to keep using. Cable provider says he`s nuts. They say as long as tv and box are turned off with remotes first and then power bar is switched off, all should be ok. is this right? we are miles away from nearest service tech guy so dont want to risk it.

Answer
You're talking pennies, so maybe you might forget this altogether.

A 42 inch plasma HDTV might draw 250 watts when turned on. In the U.S., that usually equates to about 5 cents per hour on your electric bill. Add another 3 cents for the cable box.

When the TV is "off" it's really in standby, which is one watt or less. That's about one to two dollars per year on the electric bill.

If you have an LCD/LED TV instead of plasma, it's probably even less.

Any gadget you use to skim those costs will obviously save you very little, and may give you headaches as you've already experienced. I wouldn't use anything like that.

What you SHOULD be using, if you're not already, is a very good surge protector, rated at something better than 1000 joules. For me, 2000 is the minimum and 4000 is much better. Visit the electrical department of a big hardware store or home improvement center if you don't have one. In fact, unplug your TV and cable box NOW if you don't have one. Damage due to voltage surges is one of the most common issues we see on this forum, and it's always due to failure to use a surge protector. Good luck.
