How's the US economy?

Zantetsken

I've been sorta keeping an eye on the news for around a year, as well as blogs and other unofficial opinions. People generally make it sound like the US isn't doing so well. I heard a lot about foreclosed homes, even on the news on the TV while I was in the US. I also hear people are not very happy with Obama. One snarky comment was something like "Yeah, he gave us 'change' alright. I've got nothing BUT change in my pocket now!" The person I heard this from denied any particular economic issues within the US around a year ago, though, disregarding that 14 trillion (and constantly growing) national debt and saying that every other country is in the same boat.

So, how do you feel about the US economy? Is it going down or is it getting better? Do you think it's better or worse than Canada? I know the news tends to exaggerate things and only report the bad stuff, so I'd like to hear some opinions from individuals. If you live in the US, please post your state, too.

Answer
USA has a capitalist economy with the public sector accounting for about 40% of GDP and with per capita GDP about two-thirds that of the leading euro-zone economies. Tourism provides 15% of GDP. Immigrants make up nearly one-fifth of the work force, mainly in agricultural and unskilled jobs. Greece is a major beneficiary of EU aid, equal to about 3.3% of annual GDP. The US economy grew by nearly 4.0% per year between 2003 and 2007, due partly to infrastructural spending related to the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, and in part to an increased availability of credit, which has sustained record levels of consumer spending. But the economy went into recession in 2009 as a result of the world financial crisis, tightening credit conditions, and Washington DCs' failure to address a growing budget deficit, which was triggered by falling state revenues, and increased government expenditures. The economy contracted by 2% in 2009, and 4.8% in 2010. US violated the EU's Growth and Stability Pact budget deficit criterion of no more than 3% of GDP from 2001 to 2006, but finally met that criterion in 2007-08, before exceeding it again in 2009, with the deficit reaching 15.4% of GDP. Austerity measures reduced the deficit to 10.5% of GDP in 2010. Public debt, inflation, and unemployment are above the euro-zone average while per capita income is below; unemployment rose to 12% in 2010. Eroding public finances, a credibility gap stemming from inaccurate and misreported statistics, and consistent underperformance on following through with reforms prompted major credit rating agencies in late 2009 to downgrade USA's international debt rating, and has led the country into a financial crisis. Under intense pressure by the EU and international market participants, the government has adopted a medium-term austerity program that includes cutting government spending, reducing the size of the public sector, decreasing tax evasion, reforming the health care and pension systems, and improving competitiveness through structural reforms to the labor and product markets. Athens, however, faces long-term challenges to push through unpopular reforms in the face of often vocal opposition from the country's powerful labor unions and the general public. US labor unions are striking over new austerity measures, but the strikes so far have had a limited impact on the government's will to adopt reforms. An uptick in widespread unrest, however, could challenge the government's ability to implement reforms and meet budget targets, and could also lead to rioting or violence. In April 2010 a leading credit agency assigned US debt its lowest possible credit rating; in May, the International Monetary Fund and Eurozone governments provided US emergency short- and medium-term loans worth $147 billion so that the country could make debt repayments to creditors. In exchange for the largest bailout ever assembled, the government announced combined spending cuts and tax increases totaling $40 billion over three years, on top of the tough austerity measures already taken. US, however, struggled to boost revenues and cut spending to meet 2010 targets set by the EU and the IMF, especially after Eurostat - the EU's statistical office - revised upward US's deficit and debt numbers for 2009 and 2010. Greece's lenders are calling on Athens to step up efforts in 2011 to increase tax collection, shore up public enterprises, and rein in health spending, and are planning to give Greece more time to repay its EU-IMF loan. Greece responded by introducing major structural reforms, but investors still question whether Greece can sustain fiscal efforts in the face of a bleak economic outlook and public discontent.

In comparison i like Dell's quad, and its DDR3 4G Ram rather than Sony's Dual core 9600, and its DDR2 4G RAM, not to mention dells screen is bigger than sony's. Sony definitely has a better looking design tho, but does dell's quad and DDR3 ram really have a big difference on my requirements? or at least an agreeable amount of affect ? Which would you professionals prefer?
or should i just upgrade the FW590 to a 9900 CPU or upgrade its ram or upgrade the Studio 17 more? or something like that. i really hope to get the best of the best answer because im using my money for rent on this, and hope it would be the best choice.
I need an answer before X mas because the deals end, i really need help thank you.

HD TV Question?

Is there anything better then an LCD Flatscreen TV out there today? If not, how far away in the future?

Answer
plasma tvs show more natural color than lcds do they have a more lifelike realistic picture. lcds which usually have aflorecent lamp to light the picture are now staring to come out with led back lights , they can show more natural colors. . dlps are nice but they are rearprojection. and they have their flaws , like limited viewing angle. lamp replacement, and not flat panel. the best flat panel tv is plasma. in the near future you will see 3D tvs , they are not a new type of tv just an added feature where you can watch tv movies or games in 3D. providing youhave a 3D tv. 3D program or game. and glasses. not the red and blue classic classes but more up todate version. looking further into the future you will hear of laser tvs. combined with the dlp sets laser dlps have the ability to show more than two times the natural color that plasmas can produce, providing a much more realistic picture. but to me now plasmas produce the best over all natural picture and best color and black levels. look for panasonic , pioneer , and samsung plasmas. to me and most reviews they are the best brands that produce the best images and reliability. well hoped i helped.

What LED TV brand is the best right now?

skyin

Can I know full details? Like a consumer report...

As to why you think it is the best at the moment?

THANK YOU!

Answer
Hi skyin, LG WRman Greg here,

Each brand has their own strengths and weaknesses so it would be pointless to argue which one is the best as you don't specify your criteria. However, I will give some reasons why I think LG has some of the best models for LED TVs at the moment and let you decide for yourself. The LED TV from LG, particularly the LM-series, has the advanced IPS LED Plus panel that can deliver realistic and vibrant colors and contrast. The Local Dimming capability of the LG LED TV also creates greater contrast and range of colors. The built-in TruMotion feature of these TVs help to reduce any potential juddering images to create a smooth viewing experience in even the most action-packed sequences in games, movies or sport programs. And the Local Dimming function and the Picture Wizard functions will give you control of the picture quality so you can adjust the color and contrast in the TV to best suit you and your home environment. And if you are talking about 3D LED TV, the LM-series also boast some of the greatest features for 3D TV such as 3D Depth Control, 3D Sound Zooming and 2D to 3D Conversion. Together with these, there are many more innovations coming from LG in the year 2013 regarding LED TV.

LG WRman Greg out!

Which is the best buy LCD TV OR LED TV?

JEROME S

I'm looking to purchase a 50inch television, what's better LED or LCD?

Answer
- Top brands: Panasonic (Plasma) and Samsung (LED). (Plasma > LED > LCD). (LCD is going to be discontinued. A LCD tv uses cold cathode fluorescent lamps/CCFL backlights. A LED tv is a LCD tv, but with white or red, green, blue LEDs on the edge of the screen or a full array on the back of the screen).
= Plasma has best picture and audio quality (best response times, best viewing angle, best color quality, less/no motion blur for crisp/clear images because how it's refresh rate works). Newer Plasmas have improved their burn issues by using pixel shifting/scrolling. LCD/LED is best for bright rooms and have most light coming off the screen (Plasmas are not great for bright rooms because of screen glare and faded whites, but do great for dim or dark rooms). Newer Plasmas use less energy consumption and they are cheap to buy. LED are more popular because the manufacturers want to sell you their LED expensive tvs rather than their cheap Plasmas.

- I recommend 1920x1080p for movies, computer monitor/display, some tv shows, and some game console games and I recommend 1280x720p for some tv shows and some game console games. I recommend 40+ inches for movies and/or tv shows and 20-30 inches for computer monitor and 30-40+ inches for game console games.
- FPS (frames per second): Every video consists of a number of frames per second, think of a video as a fast moving flip book. NTSC countries use 60i or 30i FPS (newer stations use 30p or 60p FPS) for tv shows. PAL/SECAM countries use 50i or 25i FPS (newer stations use 25p or 50p FPS) for tv shows. Movies use 24p/25p/30p FPS (first movie to use 48p was LOTR: The Hobbit). Games use anywhere to 2 to 120 FPS (older games use lower FPS while newer games use higher FPS, usually they are up to 60 FPS today).
- TV refresh rate (measured in hz): Example, A tv with a refresh rate of 120 hz means it refreshes/flashes the entire screen 120 times a second.

- How do LED or LCD tv refresh rates work with the FPS of a video? (I recommend real/true 240hz refresh rate, some tv advertising may fool you by listing the fake interpolation or fake backlight scanning/dimming refresh rates).
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation (Names of the new technologies for newer tv's at the link): Motion Interpolation or Motion Compensated Frame Interpolation (MCFI), is a form of video processing in which new fake frames are generated between existing ones to up the FPS of a video to reduce motion blur and/or for judder removal/judder adjustment. MCFI video processing may cause gamer input lag and/or artifacts such as the soap opera effect (may ruin the look of a video).
- Many tv's allow viewers to turn motion interpolation (MCFI) off. The tv repeats the frames a certain number of times to match the tv's refresh rate. Example; To display 24 frames per second on a tv with a 120 hz refresh rate, each frame is repeated 5 times every 24th of a second.
- But what happens if the FPS of a video does not match the refresh rate of the tv? Then you get a pulldown, a pulldown is what causes a jittery screen (aka judder) because the tv repeats the odd frames a different amount of times the tv repeats the even frames. Example; A 3:2 pulldown is post popular because it is needed to match a 24 fps video with a 60hz refresh rate tv, odd frames are repeated 3 times (12x3=36) and even frames are repated 2 times (12x2=24) and 36+24=60 FPS for a 60hz refresh rate tv.

How does Plasma tv refresh rates work with the FPS of a video?
- It will take each pixel in a frame and and repeat it a number of times based on the number of sub-field drives (SFD) the tv has with it's refresh rate. Example 1; (NTSC countries) 600hz sub-field drive/motion tv means 60hz FPS x 10 sub-fields per frame = 600hz refresh rate. Example 2; (PAL/SECAM countries) 600hz sub-field drive/motion tv means 50hz FPS x 12 sub-fields per frame = 600hz refresh rate.
- What is focused-field drive (FFD) on Neo-Plasmas? (Light switching speed = better colors and less motion blur) 2500hz focused field drive means sub-fields are virtually packed into 1/2500th of a second as a sharp impluse, creating crisp motion images even in very very fast movining images (FFD is defined as a inverse of light emission period t. 1/t = 1/0.4ms = 2,500 FFD). Regular sub-feild drives like 50 FPS x 12 sub-fields = 600 hz, light emission spreads as wide as 1 field time (1/60th sec) maximum which results in blurry images for very very fast moving images.
- Refresh rates on Plasmas work similar to LED/LCD tv's. These settings are usually automatic, but you can change them in the advanced picture settings, Example 1; 2D 24p FPS mode and choose refresh rates of 48hz/96hz or 30hz/60hz with pulldown (might use interpolation frames for pulldowns), Example 2; 3D mode and choose refresh rates of 96hz for 24 FPS or 100hz for 50 FPS or 120hz for 60 or 24 fps.ect Of course it has gamer mode or many other adjustments.

about LED or Plasma TV?

John Paul

I'm thinking of getting a samsung tv 46"... problem is which should i get? LED or Plasma? I heard plasma tvs doesnt survive that long is that true? Which should i get? Id like to watch movies on a 1080p and play ps3 games too.

Answer
Brands that I like the most and probably from best to least:
- (Top brands) Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Sony, and (Top off brands) Vizio, Toshiba, Phillips.
- When you buy a tv, don't forget to check if it has all the inputs and outputs (ports) you will need and make sure it's rated good (top model). There are smart tv's too, which has internet features and may many other features too.

Plasma >=< LED > LCD (LED is the same, but a upgrade from a LCD).
- Best picture quality = Plasma and Best audio quality = Plasma.
- Best energy consumption and environment friendly = LED and Best reliability = LED.
- (Newer plasma tv's fixed their burn in and use little less energy which means they can last longer too and a little better for bright rooms, the way plasma tv's are designed have no motion blur problems and plasma's are good for dark rooms).
- (Newer led's use motion interpolation frames to up the frame rate of a video to fix motion blur, but can cause the soap opera effect, led's are good for bright rooms).

1920x1080 resolution or higher resolution is good (1920*1080=2,073,600 pixels).
- 1080 resolution is better than 720 resolution.
- Bigger tv's are better with 1080 than 720 (If the tv is around 32 inches or less I would go with 720, any bigger I would just want a 1080 especially for tv's that are over 42 inches).
- Farther you sit away from the tv means it's better to go with 1080 than 720 (If you watch more than 6 feet away from your tv, then I definitely would go with 1080).

Progressive scan > interlaced scan.
- Progressive scanning is a way of displaying, storing, or transmitting moving images in which all the lines of each frame are drawn at the same time.
- Interlaced scanning is a way of displaying, storing, or transmitting moving images in which all the odd lines of a frame is displayed first then all the even lines of a frame is displayed second.
- Example: 1080p > 1080i or 720p > 720i or Example: 1080i > 720p (because more resolution is better for slower passed videos) or 720p > 1080i (because fast pass videos you be better off with progressive scan).

FPS = frames per second (of a video).
- Frame rate is how many individual images are displayed in a second. Think of a video as a fast moving flip book.
- NTSC tv broadcasting countries use 30p or 60i fps. or PAL tv broadcasting countries use 24p/25p or 50i fps. Movies for most/all countries use the same fps as PAL countries, movies are soon to be up to 48p fps.

Hz = refresh rate (of a tv).
- Example: A tv with a 120hz refresh rate, meaning it refreshes the entire tv screen 120 times a second. Read the below on how the fps of a video works with the refresh rate of a tv.

- Many tv's allow viewers to use motion interpolation frames and they are what cause the soap opera effect by creating more fake frames (higher fps) in between the real frames to match the refresh rate of a tv.
- The soap opera effect is when the video looks too life like due the really high frame rates and sceneries may look fake looking.
- Names of motion enhancement technologies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation

- Many tv's allow viewers to turn off interpolation and force the television to repeat the same frame a number of times to match the refresh rate of a tv.
- Example: To display 24 frames per second on a tv with a 120hz refresh rate, each frame is repeated 5 times every 24th of a second.

But what happens if the fps of a video does not divide into the refresh rate of a tv equally? = Then you get a a pulldown.
- A pulldown is what causes a jittery screen also known as judder and that's because it repeats the odd frames a different number of times it repeats the even frames of a video. The ratio of the pulldown will depend on the refresh rate of the tv.
- Example: A 3:2 pulldown is most popular because it is needed to match a 24p fps of a video with a 60 hz refresh rate of a tv. = 12 odd frames times 3 is 36 frames and 12 even frames times 2 is 24 frames and 36 frames plus 24 frames = 60 frames for a 60 hz refresh rate of a tv.

What happens if those fps into hz vendor processions cause lag when your playing a video game on a bad tv?
- Game mode turns off the vendor processors which are what can cause lag when your playing video games, but that means the refresh rate will match the fps of a video which means you then might get motion blur because of the really low refresh rate the tv is running at.

I am still new to 3d tv's and I have to get into them.
- All I can say for now is I only like 3d for very slow moving scenes. When most movies start using a higher fps (EX: Lotr-hobbit with 48 fps), 3d will look better and less blurry during face pass scenes.

I am not really a fan of projectors either and I have to get into them before I like them.

Optimal Settings for Vizio M221NV LED Tv?

Nick

I bought the above mentioned model and I hooked it up at home to my Directv reciever and the picture is blurry as could be. Ive also noticed these blackish white lines flickering at the very top of the playing picture. I know Im using a standard def directv receiver, but im sure theres a way to make the quality better. Any help?

Answer
Hey, Nick,

It sounds like you're connecting your Vizio to your box by way of the DTV/TV/Cable/Anetnna (screw-on) type connector (aka: 75ohm.) OR... maybe you're connecting via the AV (Red, White, and Yellow) connectors. Either way, they're not the best ways to go. Ideally, you'll want to connect your TV to your DirecTV receiver by way of the HDMI ports (which, if you have an SD box, you don't have.)

Those flickering black and white lines are there on just about all SD Video. The reason you don't see it on those old tube TVs is because (I'm being totally serious here:) the plastic "frame" that surrounds the picture tube covers it. (The "frame" is called a bezel, and it's there not only to make your TV look good, but also to hide a lot of those extra [garbaby] elements of the picture.) Broadcasters include a lot of those lines (tops, bottoms, sides too) to include things like closed captioning and sync info... but I digress. Because those tube TVs were analog, a little shifting left, right, up, or down was to be expected (and allowed,) so they increased the bezel size to cover it. Generally speaking, there are about 22 lines of "junk" at the tops and bottoms of an SD signal that you can't see, but those lines can be more or less depending on the calibration of the TV, the TV's health, or the brightness of the signal.

(TV's Health?! Yes! TVs have power supplies which contain capacitors. These capacitors are electronic components which contain [among other things] a liquid. As TVs age, these capacitors start to dry out, making them less efficient. Then, before you know it, a VERY bright picture causes the image to MAGNIFY just a little bit, but enough such that your 22 invisible lines at the tops and bottom swell to 30 lines [effectively making your screen image larger!]])

Crazy, huh?

Ok. So how does 1940s technology affect you? :)

With your newfangled HD set, all of those pixels are individually addressed. The pixel (the picture element which makes up a frame of video) which is at the top left corner of the screen is pixel 0,0, the one to its right is 1,0, etc... Now, all of a sudden EVERY line in the picture (including those "garbagy" lines at the top and bottom) are seen on your monitor!

Nasty, right?

So what can you do about it?

Not much, I'm affraid. The blurryness likely has to do with the cable you're using to connect your box and TV. Give it a shake, and see if the TV image doesn't get a little noisy. If it does, then it could mean bad connections on either the box or TV end of the wire(s), or bad connectors on the DirecTV box or TV themselves. If that's the case, use a different wire.

Another tip is to make sure your video cable is as shielded as possible (that's the yellow cable if you're using the 3 cable setup.) Also, try to run the yellow cable along a different path from any other cables, ESPECIALLY power cables!

You might also consider REDUCING THE LENGTH OF CABLE you use to connect the box and the TV. (Longer cables = more dropout.)

Best scenario? Upgrade your box. You bought a good HD TV; you should enjoy the best HD content.

Other than that, there aren't any settings on either the TV or the DirecTV receiver box to improve the image quality. Sorry.

Hope that helps!

Samsung LED Tv or Sony bravia W series ?

Mahmood H

I want to buy a tv but i don't know samsung LED tv is better or Sony Bravia w Series ?

Answer
LED Tv ( LCD display use LED as back-light ) is New LCD Display Technology !
They can produce a very bright image with greater contrast and deeper blacks compared to LCD TVs.
With Edge-LED lighting they can be extremely slim. Current models on the market are just over 1 inch thick.
They consume much less power. About 40% less compared to an LCD TV of a similar size.
They can offer a wider colour gamut, especially when RGB-LED backlighting is used
LCD TV Quality is close to Plasma Display.
Prices for LED TV is 3 to 4 X high compare to same size LCD TV.
Sony W Series is LCD TV . it cant compare to LED tv . and is not fair to compare.
Samsung LED TV of course is High Quality TV !
Sony Zx and X series is LED TV., it always same class / quality compare to Samsung LED TV.

Is it worth waiting for 2010 lineup of led lcd tvs?

White_Adam

from samsung sony lg et.
When do you think is the best time to buy?
Is boxing day has the best specials of the year?

Answer
Hey, as soon as you buy any electronic item today, it'll be cheaper tomorrow! If you have an old CRT TV and it works fine, wait.
If you must have a new TV now because you have nothing to watch then buy now on sale.
My choice...wait. But hey, will new LED TVs be more costly when compared to the TVs today? Plasma were $12 000 when they came out! And under what lighting/room/distance/events/programs/etc. conditions do you watch TV? You may find that an old CRT TV is fine for you???

What are the differences between LED, Plasma and LCD TV's?

Kevin Stap

Which is the best one?

Answer
Instead of everyone trying to give there own opinion on the pro and con of each technology, I recommend you go online to Home Theater Magazine. Read the reviews on tvs, along with the pro and con of each technology. For 2010 they named the Panasonic Plasma tv model VT25 as the best tv, while 2009 belong to Pioneer Elite KURO which was also a Plasma tv. Plasma is still considered to have the best picture quality of all tv in the market today. All LCD and LED tv have a problem with blur motion when watching fast action sports or playing video games. To reduce reduce the blur motion you need the faster refresh rate of 120HZ or the 240HZ which also raises the price of the tv. Hope this will help you out.

What are all things i have to look for it,while buying the tv?

Answer
I thought secam, PAL, NTSC are all in Analog TVs and once we are into digital TVs there is no restriction like that. All my friends who migrated back bought Panasonic LED tvs which has 220 V inputs and they are all happy with the purchase. The LED Tvs are much cheaper in US if you can take them in without paying customs duty.

I'm looking to buy a new TV. How do i pick one that doesn't make everything look like a soap opera?

Anthony Ma

Nowadays every TV is HD and whatnot, but i've seen a lot of HD TV's that make every show look like a soap opera, and its really annoying to look at. How do i pick out a good HD TV without the soap opera affect???

Answer
The soap opera effect is caused by TV's running at 120 or 240 hz.

You can either - a) get a plasma
b) get a LCD or LCD/LED running at 60hz
c) if you get a 120hz TV, you can turn on either "game mode" or "cinema mode" or at least turn off "motionflow" (or whatever it's called).

Samsung series 6300 LED tv?

RED

I just bought a Samsung Series 6300 LED HDTV. My cable service isn't hooked up yet so I've been watching regular (non-HD) DVDs. Every DVD I watch looks like an amateur/soap opera/British television shows. These are DVDs that I've seen before and it almost looks as if a different person filmed the movie. It's difficult to describe exactly how it looks because the colors and vividness are fine, it's just that it looks like a poorly filmed movie. Can anyone help me with this problem? Any suggestions are welcome as I have no idea what to do or what is causing this. Thanks in advance!

Answer
when you run standard cables it will look this way yellow white and red. for you you should buy a bluray player with an hdmi cable and then even your regular dvds will look nice. you can buy an up converting dvd player but most will run you around70 bucks so it would be better to future proof yourself and just get a bluray. that is one of samsungs best tvs so all you viewing will be great once it is hook up in (HD)

Question about LCD and Plasma tvs?

Brian J

My wife and I are in the market for a new HD tv. Which is the better option LCD, or Plasma?? We have no clue. Ultimatly which one is going to be a good bargain and last the longest. Thanks for any help.

Answer
LCD is going to have a longer life and has No "Burn In" problems like Plasma does.

LCD has no reflection if put near a window like a Plasma does.

LCD uses less electricity than a Plasma Does

Plasma can come in larger sizes than an LCD

Some Pros and Cons for both, go with LCD unless you want a monsterous screen size

Where should I put my tv antenna?

K

My tv used to have good reception but recently I moved in to a new apartment and the reception is bad there! Should I put the antenna close to my tv or near the window?

p.s. my tv is a small lcd tv and the antenna isn't cheap costs around $30 something.

Answer
>Should I put the antenna close to my tv or near the window?

You need a length of coax cable so you can experiment! Long enough to reach any possible spot in the apartment would be ideal.

>Should I put the antenna close to my tv

It's unlikely that your TV is in the best spot for reception.

Indoor TV antennas can be very sensitive to location because the materials the building is made from interfere with the TV signals.

>near the window?

That depends. Does the window face the direction the signals come from? Does it have old fashion glass (transparent to TV signals) or new energy efficient glass (can act as a mirror to TV signals).

Any flat metal surface will reflect TV signals, that includes foil backed insulation & metallic window screens. Materials like brick, dirt, and water will absorb TV signals.

Usually the higher you can get the antenna, the better the signal.

It helps to know what direction & distance your local TV transmitters are in. In the US you can find this info at: http://www.tvfool.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29 If you are somewhere else, eh, where are you ?

What is a good, cheap tv for gaming?

B.

I want a tv under 500 bucks. Also, do you think a 32 inch is a good size to game on?

Answer
Cheap and good for gaming.
= LED (or plasma since it will not get motion blur) panasonic or samsung tv with at least 720p resolution and with at least 120 hz refresh rate.

Brands that I like the most and probably best from least: Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Sony, Toshiba, Phillips.

Plasma >=< LED > LCD (LED is like the same/upgrade as LCD, so you should never go with LCD).
- Picture quality = Plasmas are better for picture quality (dark rooms and better dark pictures/video) and viewing experience with little to none motion blur (plasma for big tv's). (LED are better for tv's around 32 inches or smaller/small tv's for bright rooms and for bright pictures/videos).
- Sound quality = Plasmas are better, but LED is ok too,
- Appearance = I like plasma glass, but LED is nice too.
- Energy consumption = LED's are better (LED's are extremely economical and good for gamers).
- Reliable = LED's are only easier to take care of and last longer, so I guess they are better. (I recommend LED tv's for gaming).
- Price = Both are about the same price and it's up to you to decide if you want a plasma or LED.

Is 1080 good? Yes.
- 1080 resolution is better than 720 resolution.
- Bigger tv's are better with 1080 than 720 (If the tv is around 32 inches I would go with 720, any bigger I would just want a 1080 especially for tv's that are over 42 inches).
- Farther you sit away from tv's means it's better to go with 1080 than 720 (If you sit more than 10 feet away from your tv, then I definitely would go with 1080).
- Progressive scan is better than interlaced scan.
- Example: 1080p > 1080i
- Example: 720p > 720i
- Example: 1080i > 720p (because more resolution is better for slower passed videos).
- Example: 720p > 1080i (because fast pass videos you be better off with progressive scan).

Is 60hz good? = No.
- You want at least 120hz for your tv to play your videos.

Hz is the refresh rate. (Some tv's have a choice what hz you can set it at).
- It's an HD TV-set running at 60Hz - meaning it refreshes the entire screen 60 times a second.
- It's an HD TV-set running at 120Hz - meaning it refreshes the entire screen 120 times a second.

FPS = frames per second.
- NTSC countries use 60hz = 30 fps.
- PAL countries use 50hz = 24/25 fps.
(For not equal conversions there is more math to it, and there is 3:2 or 2:3 pulldowns that I will not explain).

For NTSC countries:
- To display 30 frames per second on a TV with a 60 hz refresh rate, each frame is repeated 2 times every 30th of a second.
- To display 30 frames per second on a TV with a 120 hz refresh rate, each frame is repeated 4 times every 30th of a second.

For PAL countries (you don't want a tv with 60hz because that includes more math and bad effects).
- To display 25 frames per second on a TV with a 50 hz refresh rate (PAL Countries), each frame is repeated 2 times every 25th of a second.
- To display 24 frames per second on a TV with a 72hz refresh rate, each frame is repeated 3 times every 24th of a second.
- To display 25 frames per second on a TV with a 100 hz refresh rate (PAL Countries), each frame is repeated 4 times every 25th of a second.
- To display 24 frames per second on a TV with a 120hz refresh rate, each frame is repeated 5 times every 24th of a second.
.ect

(If your playing a video with a different fps, then there is different math, I used progressive scan math btw).

The hobbit (1 out of 3): An unexpecting Journey: (Prequel to lord of the rings): is one of the first movies to change from 24 fps to 48 fps (or 30 fps to 60 fps). We may see more movies do this.

I am still new to 3d tv's, ill have to get into them as well and I am not really a fan of 3d tv's anyways.
- All I can say is it's good for very slow pass scenes and/or animated movies.

I am not a fan of projectors either.

What TV should I get?

BigMikeyB

Presently, I have a 37 inch 720p 60hz tv and I thought that it is about time that I upgrade. I sit about 5 to 8 feet from it. I watch blu rays and play video games on this tv. What TV should do you think I should get? LCD, LED, Plasma, 3D, what type of specs do you think would be good for me? Should I save up about 1000 or up and go all out or do you think I can still get a great tv for about 650-800? Thanks.

Answer
size , between 40-50 inch
HD - - definitely a 1080p or depending on your region, a 1080i
brand -- Vizio , I have bought 4 of them for 2 houses and they are top notch and the Cadillac of tvs.
type - - get one that is a combination of LED and LCD for your best color/contrast quality.
gadgets----- get a Wi-Fi built into it , you can do so much with it like searching and watching YOUTUBE or checking the weather or playing Netflix , or getting into facebook , etc.
juice ---- instead of the cheap 60hz refresh rate , eliminate the blurs and shadows by going to either a 120hz or a 240 hz refresh rate .
price range ----- you can get a real decent , power packed tv for under 700 . Example , right now walmart has a 42" Vizio , 120hz , 1080p , Wi-Fi , on sale for 478.
Or pick a brand you prefer but for me , Vizio is a top notch TV and it doesn't break your wallet.

Any suggestsions for 55 name brand LED TV and Blu-ray bundle?

Marcus

Hi. I found this bundle on Buy.com :

Samsung UN55C7000 55" Widescreen 1080p LED 3D-Ready 240Hz HDTV, Samsung BD-C5900 1080p 3D Blu-ray Disc Player and Samsung SSG-P2100X/ZA 3D Starter Kit Samsung UN55C7000 55" $1899

But:
A) The price is out of my budget. My budget is around $1200-$1500
B) I'm not at all interested in 3D or 3D glasses.

I'm going to use this TV for watching blu-ray movies, netflix and comcast/dishnetwork. I prefer name brands such as Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba, Sony, not Vizio, Sceptre, Proscan

Any recommendations is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

VIZIO M220NV LED- Horrible Input Lag, Cant game on it HELP!?

Q. I just switched from a 32" CRT to this 56" LED:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN46C6400-Ultra-Slim-HDTV1080p/dp/B003EUOMDY

I noticed a huge difference in gaming. Its harder to play my games on this new tv! I read up about input lag or refresh late and all this jargon, but nothing helps me.

What can I do to mimic my CRT performance so I can actually play these games? (im a huge xbox gamer, Call of duty, Halo, and need the good response time) I heard about a Game Mode? But I dont think this model has it. Are there any settings I should set or change?

Answer
Ok which do you have? You say Vizio M220NV but your link goes to a Samsung! If it is a Samsung then yes you have Game mode. See page 23 of your owner's manual.

The Vizio in your question is a 22 inch so I doubt that is what you want info on.

LCD, PLASMA OR LED.....?

Nathan

what is best for playing xbox. and if you know of any good tvs please tell me

Answer
The best kind of TV for fast motion content like games is Plasma!

Plasma TVs have the highest "native" contrast ratios(40,000:1), giving them the blackest blacks and most vivid and rich looking colors! They also have the fastest response times(.001ms) and fastest refresh rates(600hz)! Making them the best at producing the sharpest and smoothest motion possible with content like sports, movies & gaming!

To read more info and facts about LCD and Plasma, see this site: http://www.plasma-lcd-facts.co.uk/

However...the size of the TV you want is important! LCD TVs range in size from 5" to 65". Plasma's range in size from 40" to 65" and LED LCD TVs go from 32" to 60". Keep this in mind when looking for a new TV.

Plasma TVs are the most affordable while LED LCD TVs are the most expensive!

Panasonic is hands down the best brand to go with for Plasma and LCD TVs. Lowest failure rate of any brand of HDTV. For LED, go with Samsung or Sony!

Hope this helps!

What kind of HDTV is better: Plasma, LCD , LED, etc.?

FSPT_Tech

I want to buy an 40" - 46" HDTV (1080p) for my home to replace my 10 year old 40 " CRT TV. I've seen different types out there: Plasma, LED. LCD. What's the difference and which is considered best (quality-wise). Any references to links that explain the different types of TVs on the market now. I'm just now able to afford getting into 21st century technology and would like some help.

Answer
Confused about what type of TV to buy? LED LCD Plasma.. How to choose?

After all, there are so many acronyms and buzzwords to wrap your head around, such as 1080p, 120/240Hz, 24p, HDMI and LED backlighting. Huh?

Along with deciding how big a screen you want (which is usually tied to the size of your budget and the dimensions of your room), the next choice should be between LCD.LCD (LED Backlit) or Plasma â and all have their merits. Here, we'll describe each of these formats, and also point out their shortcomings.

LCD

What is it?
lcd tv 120mhzSimilar to your laptop computer's monitor, flat-panel LCD televisions use a liquid crystal display to produce a sharp and bright picture; these crystals are sandwiched between two panes of polarized glass, which are stimulated by an electric current and illuminated by fluorescent tubes housed behind the glass. Some newer LCD TVs, however, use LED-backlighting instead. LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, translate to a better-looking picture (see photo).

Pros
There are a number of advantages to buying a LCD televisions. For one, with more than three-quarters of all televisions embracing this technology, there is a lot of choice when it comes to manufacturers, models and sizes (13- to 103-inches, in fact). Competition, of course, breeds more aggressive pricing, too, which is good news for the consumer.

Flat-panel LCD televisions are also very thin, light and energy efficient, and are ideal for rooms with plenty of ambient light, which, for example, comes through large windows as they tend to absorb rather than reflect light (reflected light can obscure your view of the screen).

Cons
Until recently, LCD TVs didn't handle fast motion images as well as plasma TVs, resulting in a somewhat blurred image. Newer LCD TVs, though, have added technologies such as 120Hz frame doubling (or 240Hz frame quadrupling) to smooth out motion. It's still not as good as plasma, but much better than before. Also, LCD TVs used to have problems showing dark blacks (because a light was still on behind the pixel showing black, resulting in a more greyish hue). Many LCD televisions today use local-dimming with LED-backlighting (see next section) for improved contrast ratios (whiter whites and blacker blacks) - but, keep in mind, this is not an issue associated with plasma TVs.

LCD (LED Backlit)

What is it? Not a Different Type of TV

led lcd tv backlighting backlitItâs tempting to think LEDs belong in a completely separate category beside LCD and plasma TVs, but in reality, an LED television is just a type of LCD TV. The proper term would really be "LED-backlit LCD TV," but that always seems to get truncated to "LED TV" in everyday conversation, perpetuating the confusion.

To understand how LEDs function in an LCD TV, think of an actual liquid-crystal panel as the plastic pegs in a Lite Brite. They hold a translucent image, but without a powerful backlight to punch through and light it up like a signboard, youâre not going to see much. On your old Lite Bright, an inefficient incandescent light did the job, but pretty unevenly. On a typical LCD TV, fluorescent lights provide the backlighting through a special plastic sheet called a light guide that distributes light from a fluorescent tube evenly over the surface of the TV. On an LED-backlit TV, fluorescent tubes are replaced with light-emitting diodes â LEDs â the same technology that probably lights up your digital watch, the buttons on your monitor, and the indicators on your stereo. They can be either situated along the edges of the TV like a fluorescent tube, or arranged directly behind the screen in a grid. But what difference does it make, and why would anyone spend so much money on it?

The Benefit of LEDs

The most obvious reason LEDs have fallen into favor in LCD TVs: theyâre simply more efficient. Although fluorescent lights do a decent job converting electricity to light in the big scale of things, LEDs perform even better. Typically, manufacturers claim an efficiency improvement of up to 30 percent over fluorescent-based sets, which can add up significantly over the lifetime of a TV, especially on larger screens that use more juice to begin with.

LEDs are also much smaller than tubes, even after accounting for the number of them needed to light an entire TV. That means LED-backlit televisions can be manufactured significantly thinner than their tube cousins. For instance, most of the ultra-thin televisions that measured under an inch thick at CES used LED backlights, because they add very little depth to the profile. Though commercial variants arenât quite as dramatically thin as these prototypes, theyâre significantly skinnier than their fluorescent-backlit counterparts, making them some of the most chic and living-room-friendly HDTVs out there.

For home theater enthusiasts, LEDs only matter for one reason: image quality. Because fluorescent tubes mu

Political CAR Question I love my old pick-up truck but if I drive it to the polls will I get my tires slashed?

MY MERCEDES 500SL IS MORE OF A REDPUBLICAN LOOKING CAR BUT IT'S A CONVERTIABLE WILL THE TIRE SLASHING REDSTERS THINK I'M A LIBERAL FOR DRIVING WITH THE TOP DOWN.

Just trying to get to and from the polls with a good set of tires.

Answer
Campaign strategist: Five activists celebrated after tires were slashed

Sowande Omokunde, the son of Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.), is accused of slashing the tires of vans rented by Republicans on Election Day.

By Chris O'Connell
Court TV

MILWAUKEE â A Democratic political consultant for the 2004 John Kerry presidential bid told jurors Tuesday that the five campaign workers accused of slashing the tires of vans rented by Republicans on Election Day boasted about the stunt.

"They were boisterous, slapping high-fives, laughing and so forth," said Opel Simmons III, a campaign strategist, referring to the five defendants after they returned to campaign headquarters at about 3:30 a.m. on Nov. 2, 2004.

Simmons, who said he saw the men leave the office about 30 minutes earlier, testified that he only learned of what they did after Michael Pratt, the son of then acting Milwaukee Mayor Marvin Pratt, and others, spoke.

"[Pratt] says, 'We got them. They're not going anywhere today," Simmons testified.

Pratt's father was in court for much of the day Tuesday, as was U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore (DWis.), whose son Sowande A. Omokunde is also a defendant in the trial.

Simmons said the defendants' behavior led him to only one conclusion.

"I believe that they were telling me that they had gone from our office to the Bush-Cheney office and had punctured tires of vehicles in the staging area," he said.

Defense attorneys attempted to discredit Simmons on cross-examination by pointing out inconsistencies in his statements to police, which, the attorneys hope, will leave jurors wondering if the state's key witness was in fact one of the vandals.

Pratt, Omokunde, Justin Howell, Lewis Caldwell and Lavelle Mohammad are all charged with criminal damage to property â a felony that carries a maximum sentence of 3 1/2 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The GOP rented more than 100 vehicles for a get-out-the-vote campaign on Nov. 2, 2004. The vehicles were parked in a lot adjacent to a Bush campaign office, and party workers planned to drive poll watchers to polling places by 7 a.m. and deliver any voters who didn't have a ride.

Defense lawyers attempted to have much of Simmons' testimony ruled as hearsay and therefore inadmissible, but Judge Michael Brennan denied the motions.

Simmons said that despite plans for an election eve stunt dubbed "Operation Elephant Takeover" â a plan to placard the same Republican office where the tires were slashed â the operation was dropped after he overslept and several people were spotted still in the GOP office late at night.

When he came into the Democrat's office at about 3 a.m., Simmons said he saw all of the defendants dressed in black and then leave the building. When he asked two of them where they were going, both Mohammad and Pratt replied to the effect of, "Don't ask. You don't want to know," Simmons testified.

When they returned, aside from the boisterous behavior, their shoes were also covered in mud and the five men were making noises to mimic the deflating tires.

Caldwell then explained how they targeted tires of vans on the perimeter of the lot and on soft ground so that the numerous vehicles on the interior would be unable to exit because they would be trapped by the disabled vans.

On cross-examination, however, Pratt's lawyer, Rodney Cubbie went on the offensive, getting Simmons to concede that his testimony on the stand was inconsistent with his first police statement, which he endorsed as being truthful.

In the statement, Simmons told a detective that he did not arrive at the office until 4 a.m. that morning.

"Were you telling [the detective] a different story?" Cubbie asked.

"No," Simmons said. "I was telling him a very vague variation of the truth."

Simmons, who was detained by police when they connected a van seen by a security guard outside the Republican offices to him, said that he gave police the defendant's names only after 36 hours of incarceration.

Cross-examination of Simmons continues Wednesday morning and could take most of the day. The trial, which Court TV Extra is streaming live on the Web, is expected to last about two weeks.

i am torn between the panasonic plasmas or the sony 3D ready 46"... now i need a big Tv for the size of the room, and a 50" is preferable, as i have tried viewing the Sony in John Lewis at the same distance as i would in my living room, and it seems a lot larger than the 37" panasonic i have at the moment but it is still not that clear from the 5 metres i viewed it at, and need it for. i know that plasmas are also quite hot, and i would rather an LED than a plasma, as they usually have sharper displays, although i cant really tell the difernece between the panasonic and sony.. and i dont really need and wont really use the 3D on the sony...but then theres the ghosting on the plasmas and their shorter life span etc..... so I would really appreciate your comments on this, and previous owners of these tv's please comment too :)!! ...... i have the links below :

Answer
Plasma produce a much better picture 180 viewing angles, never lose the picture quality, 600hz vs 240hz that the lcds and leds refresh, the higher the Hz the less motion blur you have like when watching sports, action movies, and playing video games. Plasmas dont get hot like they use to there are some plasmas that use less energy than some leds. Plasma do have better vivid colors and deeper blacks - a more natural picture. Panasonic is rated #1 in the world right now the basically make only plasmas. The lifespan of a plasma is basically the same now as lcds and leds because the plasmas are perfected now. Plasmas are also a lot cheaper than leds, the good thing with leds they are a little brighter and do have a better looking frame. Hands down a plasma from Panasonic

About TV/DVD combo if they break?

William

I have been saving money for a new tv for a while now and I found this...

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sceptre-E245BD-FHD-24-60Hz-LED-1080p-2.6-ultra-slim-HDTV-DVD-Player/21668672

It's an good size tv for me but I have a question. If the dvd function stops working on a dvd/tv combo like this does the tv not work too?

I have heard about this happening with vcr/tvs in the past but surely they must've fixed that by now right?

Answer
It's never a good idea to buy a tv combo. Best to just buy a tv and then a blu ray. Blu rays are very cheap. And Sceptre is a junk brand. Save some more money or look around a little, many good quality tvs are on clearance now as new models will be in soon. Samsung, Sony, even Toshiba or LG. Stay away from the no name brands.

Is vizio a good brand for led TV's?

Maria

= Plasma has best picture and audio quality (best response times, best viewing angle, best color quality, less/no motion blur for crisp/clear images). Newer Plasmas have improved their burn issues by using pixel shifting/scrolling. LCD/LED is best for bright rooms and have most light coming off the screen (Plasmas are not great for bright rooms because of screen glare and faded picture, but do great for dim or dark rooms). Newer Plasmas use less energy consumption and they are cheap to buy. LED are more popular because the manufacturers want to sell you their LED cheap made expensive tvs rather than their cheap Plasmas.

- I recommend 1920x1080p for movies, computer monitor/display, some tv shows, and some game console games and I recommend 1280x720p for some tv shows and some game console games. I recommend 40+ inches for movies and/or tv shows and 20-30 inches for computer monitor and 30-40 inches for game console games.
Movies use 24p/25p FPS (first movie to use 48p was LOTR: The Hobbit).

Cheapest Name Brand LED TV?

John Locke

Looking for a sony, samsung, sharp for the cheapest price, around 22" and has HDMI not worried about resolution.

No weird westinghouse and similar brands

(looking for a small tv to setup next to my pc)

Answer
Does it have to be a TV - IE. does it need a tuner?

If not, save yourself some money and buy a computer monitor. Some have built-in speakers and HDMI ports.

Sony Zx and X series is LED TV., it always same class / quality compare to Samsung LED TV.

are lcd or led tvs better?

iPwn

i like the led, my boyfriend likes the lcd. which is ultimately better? and if you can, please list pros and cons for both. thanks in advance.

Answer
first, led tv's are lcd panels with led lights.
lcd tv's are lcd panels with ccfl lighting.

led tv's use less energy because of the lighting system and give superior contrast ratio, pushing 3 million to 1 as opposed to an avg. 40k to 70k on a standard lcd, even the sony xbr9 lcd is only 100k to 1. that means darker darks and brighter brights on an led tv.

two types of led. edge lighting and full array. the samsung 6000 series is an edge lit tv. that makes it super slim, less than 2 inches almost. with this all your lights are pointing inwards. with that said to adjust the darkness, lets say middle of the tv, all the lights need to be dimmed.

second type is full array, size wise they are about as thick as a regular lcd because they have led lights across the entire back of the tv. is this better? i think so. you have better light control. the tv will only adjust a specific set of lights that need to be adjusted to control the darkness of a specific spot. not any extra ones. power wise, i'd say the same.

sure, edge lighting may have less lights, but they have to output more light to reach the center, whereas full array or full matrix lighting only has to travel a short distance from the back of the tv. both are amazing pictures regardless. dont be sold on the thickness of the tv, you will not know the difference when you're sitting infont of the thing 6 feet away. brand wise, most major ones make it. sharp, sony, lg, samsung are the big ones i know of off hand.

now your standard lcd tv's aren't bad, but not the latest and greatest. inferior lighting resulting in lower contrast ratio (that's big in my book since any big tv you buy will be full 1080p hd, and almost always 120hz nowadays). hooked up to a blu-ray, it'll be stunning. led's will look better. and everybody going green these days led's are picking up steam.

if you don't have a hd service from a company, or don't wach blu-rays wth an hdmi cable., and intend to hook up basic cable, get a standard lcd, as you will not be using the full potential of the led tv by any means. email me if you have any other questions or wanna know about cabling or the 120hz/240hz etc etc. =)

bottom line, led's are a better, newer technology, but do you want to spend the money on it.

ps. don't do a dlp like that guy says, yes, they can produce 1080p signals BUT! horrible viewing angle, have to be right infront of the tv,dead center to see the best picture, move to the side and it darkens out because of the screen. PLUS YOU HAVE TO CHANGE A BULB! every few years (2-4 with regular use), and those aren't cheap, averaging 200 bucks. yes you get a new tv when you change it, but it's an additional costs, lcd's last about 60k hours, led's are being said to last 100k to 120k hours, twice as long. dlps are a old technology. most stores don't even carry them anymore.

to the guy below.
not all led's are slim, just edge lighting ones. full array are still thick, about 4 inches, check the lg and sharp ones.

What is the average lifespan of an LED TV viewed under the following settings?

Sarah C

I watch a ton of Blu-Rays, HD cable and video games kn mh Samsung 46" LED TV. It is now over a year old. I run it about 4-5 hours a day, backlight set to 7, brightness at 40, contrast at 100, dark levels at darkest. These settings look outstanding with what I watch and play.
Based on these settings, what would the approx. lifespan of my TV be?

Answer
Most tv in the market today are rated at 60,000 to 100,000 hours before they go half it's brightness. This also depends on the brand that you get. Any bargain price tv are not very reliable. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs along with the pro and con of each technology. You will notice that Panasonic dominates the list with a Plasma tv. In November issue of the magazine it named the Panasonic Plasma tv model VT25 as the best tv for 2010. If you read yahoo questions, you will notice that 95% of tv problems comes from LCD tv and 95% of those are the bargain price tv. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. I still have my first Pioneer Plasma tv model 4330 purchased in 2002 and have had no problems (purchase price was $6,400). Hope this will help you out.

Will A Proscan LED TV Last Long?

Kyle

I just bought a 42' LED-LCD Proscan TV. Of course i bought it for the price. I checked the reviews about this product and there was nothing but good things to say about. People who had the TV said they loved it and not one person rated it low. SO I BOUGHT IT. After buying it, i did some more research on just the Proscan Company itself and people kept saying they are cheaply made and stuff. All I want to know is roughly about how many years or so do you think TV will last me?

Answer
There's no way to predict how long any one set will last. Any TV can fail at any time for any number of reasons, regardless of the brand name or what you paid for it. This forum is full of questions from those with Samsung, Sony, etc. sets that went belly-up a few days after the warranty expired. Conversely, any bargain-basement set has a good chance of performing well for a great many years.

You might find that this or that brand tends to last longer across a broad scope of samples (thousands of customers), but again, that has little relevance to any single specific set. You won't know until it actually fails.

My big-screen Zenith CRT TV expired in 2007 less than 7 years after I bought it. On the other hand, two TVs from the 1980s (also Zeniths) are still going strong. You just can't tell until it happens.
