I'm trying to buy a tv for my apartment. I'm looking for a LCD or LED tv which is 39" or bigger. I'm kinda finding that there are better deals online rather than in stores, and I am also open to getting a refursbished tv if the price is really good. Looking for a basic average size TV for $500 or less.

I think I saw one in Costco last week for $250, and I'm in Canada where prices are higher. I just checked the Costco Canada website, cheapest TV is a 19 inch Toshiba LED for $149. A 32 inch, which is more like what most people would call average size these days, is $249 for a Toshiba LCD or a Haier LED.

Looking to buy a new flatscreen TV and want the most bang for my buck.. suggestions please?

Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs, along with the pro and con of each technology. You are not going to find any LG brand tv being recommended. The lack of software for the 3D technology is limited. At this time there are only around 180 titles available in 3D and they are mainly animated movies from disney. I would not recommend buying a used tv. Panasonic is the most reliable tv in the market today. If you read yahoo questions all the time you will notice that 95% of tv problems comes from LCD or LED tv and 95% of those are the bargain price tv. Forget 3D and get a smart tv, you can purchase a brand new one for the same price and with a factory warranty for a year. If you purchase one at Costco you will get one more year of warranty and have 90 days to return it. Hope this will help you out.

The European communications satellite service provider Intelsat has decided to remove Iranian channels, including Press TV, as of July 1 as part of an unprecedented wave of US-led attacks against Iranian media.


Intelsat has admitted it is pulling the plug on Iranian channels under pressure from the United States.

The satellite provider said it sought a waiver from Washington to extend the term of its agreement with Iranian channels, but the US government is determined to prevent Intelsat from doing so.

Press TV has learned that the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) - an agency of the US Treasury Department headed by an Ashkenazi Jew called Adam Szubin - is behind the pressure on Intelsat.

Press TV contacted the OFAC office earlier for comment, but received no response.

European governments and satellite companies have been taking Iranian channels off the air since January 2012, citing the West's anti-Iran sanctions as pretext.

However, the spokesman for the EU foreign policy chief, Michael Mann, says that the sanctions do not apply to Iranian media.

Meanwhile, the French-Israeli CEO of Europe's satellite giant, Eutelsat, has written letters to several satellite companies, asking them to stop cooperating with Iranian channels, and the Israeli lobby in the United States has openly supported European attempts to ban Iranian channels.

Press TV says the campaign against Iranian media violates Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that promotes media freedoms.

I don't think there are any products which have this capability. I do know that many stores offer extremely long cables you can use to connect devices directly to your router. They sell them in an assortment of sizes so I'm almost positive you'll find one in your size range.

Pop in a Pixar DVD or BluRay and go to the disk setup menu.

You will find test-patterns and instructions for properly setting the basic Brightness, Contrast and Color.

You won't find anything, because variaces in manufacturing of the set, your room, and even your eyesight will basically render them useless. The least you can do is get a calibration DVD and set the TV as per the instructions that came with the DVD, to the images the DVD provides.

Theoretically, no LCD TV (which is what yours actually is) will have a burn-in problem. That's a characteristic of older plasma TVs. LCDs with LED backlighting are the latest and the greatest, so there is very little likelihood that they'll ever suffer a burn-in problem.

I recently made the jump from a 26" 720p LCD to a 46" 1080p LED tv. Don't get me wrong, the picture is fantastic. Video games look great and so do movies, but they just look a little odd, even generic at times. Why is this?

You probably just need to tweak your picture settings. I had to do the same thing with the LG I bought about a month ago, and it made a world of difference.

Also, if your TV is like mine and has that dejudder stuff, turn it off. Dejudder makes everything look rather soap opera-ish, and causes lag in games from time to time.

Where is your TV signal coming from? Are you giving the TV a high def signal?

Think about this for a moment. If your TV is getting a 16:9 aspect ratio high def picture, it automatically fills the entire screen.

On the other hand, if your TV is only getting a standard def signal, then we know the picture has a 4:3 aspect ratio and you have those empty spaces on the left and right to deal with, which is what you are complaining about.

What can your TV do to deal with that empty space?

The choices are pretty limited. You can expand the entire picture horizontally, which makes everyone look fat or you can expand the entire picture equally, which will cut off information at the top and bottom of the screen. Those are the ONLY choices!

I'm guessing from your question that you are not getting a high def signal from whatever the source is. If nothing else, at least put up an antenna so you can get broadcast high def. Otherwise, you have essentially wasted your money by buying a TV you are not taking advantage of.

I absolutely love the mord'sith Cara from TV show Legend of the Seeker. I have the biggest crush on her, she's my favorite character. I love the tough attitude and sarcastic remarks. Before I buy the books I'd like to know how different is she in the books??

I'll field this one for you. I usually answer most of the sword of truth questions on here because i'm somewhat of a sword of truth series expert. i've read the entire series. i read all 12 books in a 3 month span, which is pretty intense with a full time job and considering each book is almost a thousand pages long. i was hooked.

before i talk about cara, you should know that anyone who has read the book series will tell you that the books, are a million times better than the tv series legend of the seeker. they are also far more graphic.

it's also important to note, that almost everything you saw in the show, and i mean just about everything, does not happen in the books. they loosely followed the concept of terry goodkind's novels.

now as far as cara goes, i will warn you, there might be some spoilers in here. so don't read this if you want to be taken by surprise.

cara in the books:

she is first introduced briefly at the end of the second novel, stone of tears, and very briefly. since richard killed darken rahl at the end the first novel, he dies, and never returns to the world of the living except one time in spirit form briefly in the second book, and another time in spirit form in the 4rth book in the temple of the winds.

she never meets and falls in love with a man by the name of leo. that character was created out of thin air. instead, she slowly falls in love with a captain in richard's d'haran army, who later becomes a general, and they eventually marry at the conclusion of the series. but not much is discussed about her and the general's relationship.

cara is also one of 3 mord sith richard and kahlan become very close friends with. she is just as cocky, funny, and sarcastic as she is in the show, but it's better written if you ask me. you will love the other 2 mord sith, berdine, and raina (the two mord sith are a lesbian couple). they are equally funny, cocky, etc just like cara. but cara is the main bodyguard of richard and kahlan.

given the fact that i've told you that the show is way different, know that cara and kahlan become like sisters. they never have any confrontations about killing the other confessors since the other confessors are already dead at the start of the series. kahlan is the last of her kind from the beginning, and was the mother confessor to begin with since she was the most powerful of her kind.

the majority of the book series is not about random quests as the show was set up to be due to the 1 hour episodes. after book 2, it's about a massive invasion by the imperial order led by a dreamwalker by the name of emperor jegang (able to control the minds of others even from vast distances to do his bidding) that invades the new world (the westland (where the heartland is located), d'hara, and the midlands) by a far superior force in an attempt to kill, rape, plunder, and ultimately make the new world submit to it's ideals, that humanity should selflessly sacrifice themselves in order to serve their fellow man.

richard and kahlan eventually marry about a 3rd of the way through, and unite d'hara and the midlands and create armies of their own to form the d'haran empire in a desperate struggle to defend the new world, and the innocent victims threatened by jegang and his armies numbering in the millions.

doesn't that sound like a wicked story? so there you have it. believe nothing of what you see in the show, the books are way more epic, the characters more powerful, captivating, and realistic. and it's just a fantastic book series. my personal favorite of all the series i've read. i was hooked from day 1, and i couldn't put the books down.

prepare to get addicted. i just found out mr. goodkind is coming out with a new richard and kahlan novel early next year. i'm super stoked. best of luck. get it. read it. you will see what i mean by how much better the story goes. you love it. guaranteed.

Samsung also makes great monitors. They're the technological leader for panels in LCD televisions, and Apple displays also use Samsung parts. One good Samsung model is FX2490HD. It has a built in TV tuner and speakers. One thing to keep in mind is that most cheaper monitors are only 1920x1080 (not 1920x1200) and do not use IPS type panels which means they can have inferior viewing angles and color accuracy. An LED backlight doesn't matter too much but it offers better power consumption and higher brightness. If your main thing is gaming/entertainment, a glossy coat will boost the colors and contrast, but I would avoid it for a work computer because it can strain the eyes.

The HZ is only important on LCD and LED tvs, if you are going to be watching allot of sports and playing video games. The higher HZ of 120 and 240 will reduce the blur motion on fast action moves. Plasma does not have any problem with blur motion and they are less expensive that the LCD or LED tvs. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs. You will notice that Panasonic has more Plasma tv being recommended than any brand in the market today. Also in November issue of the magazine it named the Panasonic V series tv (Plasma) as the best tv in the market for 2010. If you read yahoo questions, you will notice that 95% of tv problems comes from LCD tv and 95% of those are the bargain price tvs. You get what you pay for. Hope this will help you out.

I'm down to 2 tv's in my decision. Just looking for opinions from people who are know about this stuff or maybe have owned the tv's.

The 70 inch razor LED tv is 100 dollars cheaper, but from what I know, Vizio is a less reliable brand than Samsung, but I've also seen some reviews of the ES8000 that people pay for this tv expecting way more out of it than they get because of the price. It seems to me, theyre so expensive because of the technology and software you get with the tv, but the quality isnt much different from other tv's of rival companies.. The vizio has 120 Hz refresh rate, when the ES8000 has 240 Hz. But, I'm also looking at a 55 inch Samsung compared to a 70 inch Vizio.

Any thoughts or suggestion? Please and thank you.

Can using a computer as input damage a TV?

I got a new TV and hooked it up to my computer for about 90 minutes. After that it died. Is it possible that the computer that was using it as a display could cause damage to it, or did I probably just get a bad TV that was basically DOA? I'm really worried about ever trying that again now. I've seen a lot of stuff about doing that with TVs and I did it with my old tube TVs before, but I just don't know what to think about these LCD/LED TVs (this is the first one I've really used much). Is my paranoia justified or should it be impossible for my computer/video card to break a television?

Depends on the model, probably.

Some LCD TVs have a VGA input that allows the TV to double as a monitor. It is also possible that some models can be damaged by displaying a static image (such as the taskbar/dock at the bottom) for too long, or if the video card sends a display rate or video dimensions that the TV cannot handle.

I'm inclined to think your TV simply was a lemon and should be returned for warranty replacement.

I was watching tv the other day and came across this show called dooms day bunckers! Are there people really building bunckers bc they think the world is gonna end in 2012 or is the show just trying to get ratings by making it seem like people are doing this? Help I dont want to die!

Approximately 8 months from today the world will come to an end, according to some who cite the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar as evidence of a Dec. 21, 2012, apocalypse. But both astronomers and experts on Mesoamerican history say the Mayan apocalypse is likely to be another in a long line of failed doomsdays.

According to the Maya Long Count calendar, the winter solstice of 2012 â Dec. 21, 2012 âis the end of a b'ak'tun, a 144,000-day cycle that has repeated 12 times since the mythical Maya creation date. The b'ak'tun that will end in 2012 is the 13th, supposedly a full 5,200-year cycle of creation.

Because of this end date, a number of predictions have attached themselves to Dec. 21, from the end of the world via collision with a rogue planet, to the ushering in of a new world era. But neither historians nor astronomers put much credence in these predictions.

Deciphering the Mayan calendar-

In fact, according to archaeologists, it wasn't the Mayans who linked the end of the 13th b'ak'tun with the end of the world. According to Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History, when Judeo-Christians began to decipher Mayan writings, their preconceived notions of apocalypse and the end of the world led them to link Mayan calendar cycles with doomsday.

"A lot of the end-of-the-world mythologies are the result of Christian eschatology introduced by Franciscan missionaries," John Hoopes, a scholar of Maya history at the University of Kansas, told Livescience, referring to missionaries just entering the New World andcoming into contact with native people.

Maya scholars disagree on exactly how the Maya people would have interpreted the end of their calendar cycle, Hoopes said, though many say they would have seen it as a new beginning.

Astronomy anomalies-

Many of the supposed 2012 doomsday scenarios involve astronomical phenomena: A rogue planet, solar storms or a planetary alignment. But NASA scientists say these aren't real threats.

One theory holds that a rogue body called "Planet X" or "Nibiru" will collide with Earth in 2012, snuffing out our planet. The only problem with this theory? Nibiru is made up.

"There's no evidence whatsoever that Nibiru exists," said Don Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object program office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., at a public talk Dec. 8. Yeomans said theories that Nibiru is lurking behind our sun make no sense.

"We would have seen it years ago," he said.

Likewise, Yeomans said, there are no planetary alignments or other astronomical anomalies set for Dec. 21, 2012.

One doomsday theory based on perhaps a pinch of science involves the sun. After years of relative peace, the electromagnetic activity on the surface of the sun is heating up, according to NASA. Some fear that an enormous solar flare will engulf Earth or otherwise destroy us.

"The sun undergoes an approximately 11-year period of activity," Baker said. "It goes from very weak conditions, the solar minimum, to some very large solar maximum numbers."

Humans do have to watch out for solar storms, which can disrupt satellite communications and electrical grids here on Earth. Different industries adjust in different ways, said Rodney Viereck of the NOAA Space Environment Center. Airlines that rely on satellite communications will fly at latitudes where alternative forms of communication are possible. Industries dependent on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology will delay crucial activities. Power grids will adjust voltages to handle electromagnetic fluctuations.

Finally, theories abound online about one more scientific phenomenon and the 2012 apocalypse: a magnetic pole reversal on Earth. Believers worry that a flip-flop of the Earth's magnetic field will throw civilization back into the Stone Age, or perhaps destroy all life on the planet, by temporarily dropping the magnetic-field barrier to radiation from space. now because you got the phone wet you have no warranty so you have nothing to lose. but I have tried this it works.I dropped my phone in water, I got it working.Remove your sim if you have one,take the phone apart as much as you can!!! get a bowl big enough to lay the phone in flat on its back.now get a small bottle of isopropyl alcohol 50% stronger if you can! and a soft tooth brush.put your phone in the bowl led side up,add the alcohol but try to keep the led dry it wont hurt it but can cause some spotting.leave the phone in the alcohol for no more then 10 seconds,remove let it drain useing the tooth brush jently rub away any residue,then quickly redip the phone 2 or 3 seconds.now the hard part lol just kidding its the waiteing game.use your hair dryer to dry as much of the phone as you can.do not put the phone back together,find a dry heat sorce like your tv or moniter or your heating vent,let it sit to dry for 2-3 days.thats it {caution don't think its dry after only one day its not!!! wate 2-3 days} after the wateing game ends put your sim back in then the battery,your done.good luck like I said it worked for me..

Yesterday night I went out and bought a Samsung Smart LED TV 55', set it up, blah blah blah and went to bed. Today I tried to hook up my Xbox and it just won't work. Everything is plugged in correctly...(I think...) and everything is tight enough and what not but it just won't work! Yes, my Xbox is on. Maybe I'm on the wrong channel or something I dunno but it's just not coming up on the screen. Help? Please?

Best thing to do, is to use HDMI.

You don't need to spend much ($10 - $25), but HDMI is the way to go.

Then set your input to HDMI.

If your not sure how to do that, there is often a "master" input button that will cycle through all the inputs on the TV.

I would go with a Samsung or Sony. You definitely want to get a 1080p model (obviously) which isn't a problem if you're looking for a 40" or larger anyway. Stick with an LCD for gaming (unless you have the money for an LED).
Also I would strongly recommend getting a 120hz model, basically anything in Samsung that is Series 6 or higher numerically will be great. In Sony's case, anything V-Series or lower alphabetically (W, XBR, Z etc.) will also be great.
If you have mostly Sony products to work with, stick with Sony, but remember that Samsung's generally have a higher contrast ratio and lower price for models comparable to Sony. Good luck though!

(To "jack": No Panasonic does not have the best picture, I sell televisions and I get look at ALL different brands ALL day long, so i have no idea where you are getting this notion from. Samsung's easily have the best picture.)

Sony XBR LCD's are fairly close to the top of the LCD market.

I think people do go for plasma for the deep blacks, which are pretty hard to generate on an LCD

LED is VERY good at generating black level, and very thin, too. Hence the cost.

Sony no longer makes plasma televisions, you might have been looking at a LCD. (they stopped in late 2004)

My thing is I should have looked before buying if the tv was a smart tv that has wifi access; this one does not. Everything is in operating order.
