Q. Regular TV black and white TV from the old days
Plama TV
LCD TV
Led TV
DLP TV

Answer
Seriously? Wiki/Google much?

Regular tv's: not the black and white ones, color, crt models. Cathode Ray Tubes, has a gun in the back, shoots junk towards the front. Known for superior black colors and contrast.

Plasma: Panes of glass, tubes of gas. Superior contrast ratio, much much much higher than traditiona lcd's, talking 2million to one and up. Newer models have the same lifespan of lcd's 60,000 hrs to 100,000 hours. Much higher refresh rate @ 600hz, faster response time .001ms. Perfect for movie watching and regular tv watching. Not as high of a chance for image retention as they used to be, newer sets you're looking at about 10-12ish hours before it happens, or so they say. Usually have a glass panel on the front which can give you more reflection in brighter rooms. But much better for fast action stuff.

LCD tv: I call these traditional LCD's. You have an lcd panel with the lightsource behind it, this case they are basic CCFL Tube Lights. Low contrast, high end sets have a 100,000 to one dynamic contrast ratio. Only go up to 240hz vs plasmas 600hz. You'd be hard pressed to even see the difference from a 120hz vs a 240 hz on regular movies or tv, yet alone 240hz vs 600hz. No chance of burn in, so more recomended for heavy gaming and pc connection, since both tend to have the most static images. They lose a little contrast at the higher viewing angles. The panels without any glass front will simply absorb light.

LED: as far as consumer led tv's they are actually LED LCD tvs. they have a LCD panel but instead of CCFL lighting they have LED lights. You get high dynamic contrast, comparable to plasmas 2 mil and up, without the draw back of the plasmas burn in. so they are well suited for superior movie watching and hooking up to your pc, or viewing photos on them without any risks. only up to 240hz as far as refresh rate, but, like i said above, you really really have to nitpick the details to see the difference from 120vs240. there are 3 types of led lighting systems. edge lit; lights are around the edge of the tv pointing inwards which makes the set super thin. downfall to that is, to me at least, you get an even washed out look on the black areas. second type is full array backlighting without local dimming (sharps). the lights are on the back of the tv dirrectly which means you get better lighting directly on the panel itself. the third is full array with local dimming, this is going to be the best out there. the lights are in the back behind the lcd panel, but the lights locally dim according to the picture. so, lets say the top right of the picture is darker, the tv will adjust that set of lights lower or turn off while leaving the rest of the lights in the tv alone to give you truer blacks and better contrast of colors. the samsung 8500 seires does this, as do the toshibas and lg's. even though the sharp doesn't do this, they have amazing panels that don't leak as much light and are still sexy tv's.

DLP: projection tv's, i stay away from the traditional ones. they implement a light bulb, a color wheel and the mirror chip by texas instruments. the chip has tons of little tiny mirrors that switch on and off, reflecting or not reflecting light onto the screen infront. trick to these is that...well, light bulbs burn out and these arent cheap, 200 bucks and up usually. tons of moving parts. the tv themselves though are crazy cheap for the sizes you can get. newer models like mitsubishi are changing things though. instead of the lamp and a color wheel they are putting a laser array thing to beam lights into the chip. so much more reliable system, nonetheless it is old tech, i'd stay away unless you want a super huge tv for cheap.

plasmas used to have the market on big sets vs the lcds, but lcds you can get in 65 inches, sometimes 70 (i think sharp had one a while ago), and plasmas can get pretty huge too. LED lcd's are topping at 55 for the time being.

but thats the gist of it.

Should I buy a Plasma or LED?

MINE

I heard Plasma has better contrast and doesn't get blurry, but has problem with light shinning to it.
Plasma seems more economical than LED.
Is LG, Panasonic & Sony good brands for plasma and LED?
I want to know the good & the bad for Plasma & LED.
Are they good for gaming?

Answer
You have heard some things backwards.

Plasma uses more electricity because it generates heat so it is NOT more economical. But the prices for Plasma sets may be lower, but only Panasonic and Samsung seem to make them anymore.

If you are a gamer - go for Plasma.

LCD panels for many years were inferior to the image you could get from a Plasma because of 2 inherent problems with the technology:

* Motion Blur - so you need a LCD with "120 hz" refresh to reduce, but not eliminate, motion blur
* Poor black levels/poor contrast - so you need a LCD with LED back-lights and regional dimming

With these 2 'defect reduction' technologies, LCD televisions can come close, but not usually equal the image quality of a generic plasma panel.

The problems with LCD panels do not usually show up watching sitcoms or dramas. But action films or video games with fast moving objects - these are the torture-test for LCD panels.

A few other generalities:

* The higher end models of LCD panels have faster processors and can give you a great gaming experience. But the lower end models show lots of motion blur even among the same make. Whenever someone tells you their LCD works great for games - get the model number.

* You can get LCD panels in 60/70/80 inches. But Plasma screens are glass and would break under their own weight if the size gets much bigger than about 55 inches.

MODELS

Consumer Reports has a 'best of everything' issue out right now and their rankings of televisions is usually close to reality. You might want to run out and pick up the current issue.

If it was me and I was going for a LCD panel - the Samsung D7000 and D8000 series of televisions have been out for nearly a year (read "lower prices") and have gotten great reviews. An alternate would be the higher end Sharp units. Sharp is not as popular but they have the quiet respect of some people.

For plasma - Panasonic Viera is acknowledged to be the best. Samsung makes a D8000 in a plasma, but strangely I have not found much reviews on it.

ALWAYS:

If you get a new TV - pop in a calibration disk or a Pixar movie and go to the test patterns and turn down the brightness & contrast to sane levels. This will help reduce burn-in and give you a better, more realistic picture.

Hope this helps.

I have an older 65 inch Hitaci TV (65F59) . The picture has been getting darker over the years with the bright up now to 100%. I assume it's due to dust on the 3 projecter lights inside. I plan to one day take TV apart then clean the dust, dirt, etc.

Does anyone know what to use, how to do it or a link to a website who specializes in big TV's

Thanks

Answer
How old is it?

Rear projection TVs also lose color. I had a 40' rear projection Mitsubishi for 25 years, picture was getting darker and the green beam was fading. $50 for house call, he boosted the green beam and told me that you are better off buying a new LCD, LED or Plasma than spending any more - average life of rear projection is 10-12 years.

Phone an authorized Hitachi TV repair place and talk to a tech. These people have probably dealt with problems like this a lot of times and they could give you what the problem is. Dimming picture likely means dimming lights. They can also let you know about $$$$$ for changing the 3 beams.

It will likely be cheaper to buy a new LCD TV. The new TVs are much easier on the eyes with super sharp print and vibrant colors.

When I purchaaed my 42" LG HD TV I had only wished I bought it much sooner (except I was waiting for prices to come down)

What should I consider when buying a TV for PC gaming?

J

This is for my new man-cave. Make it count!

I know it has to be 1080p and probably LED .. but other than that what features should I look for?

Answer
Size. Sounds obvious but it's slightly different than picking a size for normal tv. The text on PCs is quite small so you will want a bigger tv. I know you can change the text size on the computer, but that makes things cramped. I have a gaming PC connected to a 50 inch TV sitting 2.5 metres away and I have to lean forward and strain my eyes to read text at 150% DPI. Depending on the size of your man cave, I'd recommend at least 60 inches.
Another thing is the frame rate (Measured in Hertz for TVs). Most TVs don't go higher than 60Hz because films are usually at 23fps with the occasional film at 60fps. TV is also broadcasted at 23fps. PCs on the other hand go as high as the GPU allows. Most PC screens will go at at least 100Hz. Games usually run at 60fps and many can get up to 120fps on high end PCs. So your TV should really be at least 100Hz.
Also, not really a problem now, but you should make sure the TV has the right plugs. Almost all TVs will have around 4 HDMI jacks, a VGA jack, and a Component jack. Sometimes DVI as well. Chances are your PC has HDMI but better safe than sorry.

best led tv with local dimming
on LED TV Technology Pros and Cons: A breakdown of what is good and bad ...
best led tv with local dimming image

jober939

I'm looking for a tv around 32 in. that is relatively cheap.

Answer
Both have a liquid crystal display screen. The only major difference between the two is that older or less expensive sets use a fluorescent lamp for the backlight, while an "LED" set uses a bank of light emitting diodes.

The LED backlighting uses less electrical power than the fluorescent lamp. There are two versions, "edge" lighting and "full matrix." Edge-lit sets can be very thin. Full matrix sets allow for "local dimming," which can bring improved contrast in specific areas of the screen.

New for 2011: some of the latest model edge-lit sets also provide for a certain degree of local dimming.

However, don't look for a *major* difference in picture quality. The HD picture on an "LED" set will be difficult to distinguish from a very good conventional LCD set.

Amazon has it for $2544, the comparable Samsung model is $2536. Is it worth $8 more...yes.

Thinking of getting a new TV and I've noticed that Plasmas are way cheaper the LCD's... Does anyone know why??

Answer
Cost issue - yah, because LCDs have to put in expensive add-ons to match Plasma quality. But they pass along that cost to you the consumer.

All LCDs, CCFL or LED, suffer from motion blur problems. They can't refresh the screen fast enough to keep up with fast action scenarios. So you get ghost trails. Now, the manufacturers found a way to try and eliminate this problem. Its the advanced Refresh Rate spec you see on LCDs. So the base is 60Hz, but you can pay for advanced options like 120Hz or 240Hz. This feature can help a lot, especially as you go into larger sized TVs, but you're expected to pay a premium for it.

Now Plasma on the other hand has a near instantaneous response time of like 0.001 ms. This means it has a near flawless motion playback (like a CRT or DLP). This is inherent to the technology, so there is nothing extra to pay for in order to get crisp and clean motion playback.

Next, CCFL based LCDs are sometimes claimed to provide grey blacks, muted colors, and so-so contrast as you get into larger sized sets (a bit as you break 40", but more so as you break 50"). So in order to combat this, LCD manufacturers came out with the LED light source. LED does typically solve these problems for an LCD set. But, besides 3D, this is the most premium feature for an LCD so carries the greatest cost add-on for you the consumer.

Plasma on the other hand will deliver vivid colors, deep contrast, and true blacks right out of the box. It is something that is again inherent to the technology. So there is no advanced feature cost to have to pass onto the consumer.

So that's how Plasma prices can beat LCD prices and still deliver top notch image quality experience. And stick with Panasonic for the best image quality and set reliability.

The main knock on Plasma now is that it is still a glass unit. So if you have loads of uncontrollable light, glare might be an issue. But if you can control the lighting in the room, it shouldn't be that big of a deal. And LCD's aren't magically perfect with glare, they're just better.

Most other knocks against Plasma are myths and misconceptions. They do not need to be re-charged. Their are now energy star certified models, so they are no longer power hogs. You can get thin models if you need something of lesser weight. Modern ones do not suffer burn-in. Especially if you go with Panasonic, which includes extra anti-image retention features above and beyond the advances in the technology.

Is there a big difference between matte and glossy screens?

Bacon

The laptop that I want only comes in matte.
My old desktop and college laptops are in matte and the quality is just terrible when compared to my glossy 15" laptop or 40" LED TV.

I can barely look at them, I get eye strain and feel depressed.. which is somewhat strange...

I'm unsure if it's because my desktop is a few years older and the screens on the laptops have bad graphics cards or perhaps they have damage-resistant layers?

Anyway, could you tell me just how different matte is from glossy.
I get 0 reflections on my current glossy screen as my lamp and lights in the house all have shades. In my bedroom the windows face the back of my laptop, hence no glare.

Thank you

Answer
Hi troll,

Glossy screens have vibrant colors and high contrast and brightness because they have a smooth, high-gloss surface. Glossy screens use optical coating to reduce the amount of reflected external light. Their shiny surfaces reflect more light than matte displays. In controlled environments, such as darkened rooms, or rooms where all light sources are diffused, a glossy display may be more enjoyable for the viewer.

Matte screens have anti-glare finish, to scatter the reflected light. Matte screens diffuse light instead of reflecting it so they might be easier to read outdoors, if the backlight provides enough brightness. This characteristic, however, has a number of side effects, which include scattering the light from the display and increasing the blur. Additionally, it results in reduction of the contrast ratio, color intensity, and viewing angle.

Hope the information is useful to you.

Thanks and Regards
Priyanka S

any way both remotes work for both tellys how can i stop this thanx

Answer
you could try fitting a shade over the remote sensor on the tv . something shaped like a quarter length of a toilet roll inner might work . it should restrict the beam so the tv cant "see" the other remote
.A small piece of paper over the sensor should reduce the sensitivity too.
dont forget that the beam from the remote reflects off walls so angling a tv may help.

I am planning to get a 55 inch TV for my room.

Answer
I would recommend a good brand like Samsung, no matter what type. I like the slim profile of an LED, but it is basically an LCD with different backlighting. Plasma would be good for sports and fast action without any blur problems and a very wide viewing angle. However, if you need some information about 55 Inch TV you can visit this site http://www.55tv.org/samsung-un55eh6000-55-inch-tv/

How much will LED TVs drop in price come 4th quarter/ Christmas?

Mike S

Last year LCD TVs had a drastic reduction in price. I believe partly because of the economy and partly because LCD technology is being phased out to make way for LED TVs. I know prices *probably* won't see a drastic drop like last year but how much, in your opinion, do you think LED TVs, particularly 240Hz and 46-55" TVs will drop in price from now until 4th quarter/ Christmas season? Thanks for your input. :)

Answer
Every most-popular technology reaches $600 for 40in and $1000 for 50in, and only falls lower when the next generation of that technology comes in or another technology grabs up its market share (see 720p 50in plasmas for $600 as a perfect example).

So, to $600 for 40in and $1000 for 50in in the long run, like after christmas sales, but +$200 for Christmas itself.

Are they ashamed of something?

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2012/10/26/china-new-york-times-wen-jiabao-wealth-website/1660081/

Answer
Only $2 Billion in assets? No wonder Bo Xilai got kicked out of CCP, Bo is reported to have $8 Billion kept in England.

Let me repeat my answer to an earlier similar question,

ALL CCP leaders are multi billionaires, Premier Wen no exception, it's only a matter who grabs more billions Yuan. The power struggles among the CCP gangsters constantly going on inside the mafia state is a mean to scramble for power into the 9-member super CCP elite team in order to grab unlimited wealth.

Among the various wealth grabbing under the control of Premier Wen and his followers include infrastructures like the speed trains, subways, dams, bridges, airports, government buildings and projects, etc, etc.

Since Wen took office as Premier, he ordered the speedy development of Tianjin, his hometown as N.E.'s financial hub. Even 0.001% kick-back on the above-mentioned is well enough to have anybody lived 10 luxury lifes.

It's not a secret that Wen's wife is a high profile super rich jewelry merchant, 100 times more extravagant than Taiwan's corrupted ex-President Chen Shui Bian's wife. ALL CCP guys grab wealth and power with NO shame, it's just Wen's wife and family do it very obviously that raise eyebrows of Chinese netizens. This also explains why there're constant power struggles inside China, lol.

Without democracy, this bunch of gangsters will continue the way they are, enriching themselves all at the expense of the 1.4 billion poor Chinese PEOPLE.

Say if 2 suppliers, A and B, supply equipment and services to the speed trains, A is of inferior quality but willing to pay a higher kick-back to Wen and his followers, surely A will be picked over the best interests of the Chinese PEOPLE, thats why there're constant failures in those China-made trains.

BTW Chinese netizens called Wen "the best male actor", because he likes to show off how he cares for the people in front of the media but often what he promises never matierialize eg he promised in front of the TV during the 2008 Sichuan Quake that investigations would be launched on the tofu government buildings and schools that led to tens of thousands kids died. 4 years gone by, nothing happened. The activists who are pushing the investigations are all being locked up in jail or tortured by CCP to shut up.

As well, Wen Jiabao was seen standing beside Zhau Zeyang, the then Premier on the eve of the 1989 student massacre when Zhau visited the students in Tiananmen Square. As we all know, Zhau was later put in house arrest after the massacre ended while Wen has been climbing his CCP ladder both smoothly and successfully.

Democracy is the ONLY way to START curbing CCP's corruption.

I need advice on how to get a Sony flat screen fixed.?

I have a 40" LCD that's a couple of years old. The top third of the display dimmed all at once. I "yahoo'd" TV repair and there are too many options. Do you have any first hand experience? Suggestions?

Answer
bbt91945s response that the reliability of a plasma beats that of an LCD is just beyond bizarre and illustrates how little of reliability that he really knows. His one example means absolutely nothing statistically and was a waste to have quoted here in your situation anyway, not to mention your Sony TV is far better than his Viewsonic LCD that he is basing his "experience" on. Not to even mention that in the time since he bought his plasma, Panasonic has gotten out of the plasma market and only recently reentered it.

As I have said many times and will repeat again, a plasma TV in general uses 50% more electricity that a LCD set and about 75% than an LED.

http://www.geekabout.com/2008-03-06-502/power-guzzlers-how-green-is-your-hdtv.html

What does this have to do with anything you ask?

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-bigtvs14-2009oct14,0,4908205.story

The fact is, CA is about to pass new energy efficiency requirements which will all but ban the sale of new plasma TVs. So expect to see Panasonic, and any others who are still producing plasmas to once again, exit that market.

Now... back to your issue...
If you had a similar off brand LCD, I'd be telling you to start looking for a replacement too. However, you don't have an off brand and you gave no indication that you were interested in spending a bunch of money to buy a new TV. I don't know where you live, but I would recommend that you at least find a sony authorized repair shop near you, either by looking in your yellow pages or on-line here:

https://eservice.sony.com/webrma/web/index.do

I do not know what is wrong with your set, but I do have an idea that it will not cost you much to have it fixed.

about recent violence in Assam (India) because of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants?

Answer
You don't want to hear what we think of the persecution meted out to the Bengali speaking Indian citizen who are Muslim.

Your Indian government and your press (printing and electronic media) are not unbiased source to get a fair information. Read international newspaper or magazines or listen to BBC World news on TV and Radio and get to know the truth. Indians are too patriotic to think that their government or majority Hindus can and is doing anything wrong, and always portray themselves as 'victim' at the hand of minority innocent people who can barely manage three square meals, let alone doing subversive acts inside India.

I am not suggesting at all that Indian minorities in many places like Kashmir and Assam and such North-Eastern states are not fighting against the Indian government to gain some autonomy, if not outright freedom from Indian clutches.

What happened is that India has been fighting with Pakistan for over 60 years now and its citizens are as hostile as the Pakistani citizen against each others. This frenzy has led them to believe that all the neighbors of India (Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in particular) are always conspiring to destabilize her, which is contrary to the fact as we all know how the RAW of India is doing the jobs similar to CIA of USA and ISI of Pakistan are doing to destabilize its neighbors.

We have illegal Indians living in Bangladesh those are Hindus as well as Muslims, by the way.

Hope your rational thinking would one day let you find the true nature of geopolitics India is playing to assert its Superpower status in this region. Please do not add fuel to the fire and be instrument to the genocide happening in India since 1947 where both Hindu and Muslims ordinary citizens are the real victim.

The present government in Bangladesh led by Sheikh Hasina of Awami League is most friendly and cooperative to the Indian leaders and its government. If you have to cry wolf now then what will happen when the Anti-Indian party BNP would come to power in next general election of 2013, given the mood of the people who are fed-up with the performance of AL who are ruling heavy-handed with people and showing servitude attitude towards its savior India, that would not be available so easily if BNP comes to power. Therefore, as the adage goes "Make hay while the sun shines" and don't start shadow boxing at least till the tenure of AL ends and bungle India's chance to win Bangladeshi peoples' hearts and minds with false and fabricated propaganda those are inciting riots in India.

If you really wants to know what we feel about your mentioned query then I would advise you to read the following newspaper: www.weeklyholiday.net/

Hope above helps.

How big is Rugby in countries besides America?

flonkas

I love the game its awesome and our school just started a team. Rugby is not big here at all. Theres 1 store every thousand miles. Its never on tv at all and No one knows about it. How different is it in other countries? detailed answers please

Answer
Rugby is the fastest growing sport in several countries globally. It started at Rugby School in England, a public boys school that is now effectively a private schoool.
Rugby is the national sport of New Zealand and Wales. It is very popular in two states of Australia, in South Africa (particularly among the white population), in Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and Ireland, where games are usually televised free-to-air. It's big among parts of the population in Argentina, Uruguay, England and Scotland, and is a well rooted minor sport in France, Italy and Japan.
It is the official sport of the Chinese army, which has the most rugby players of any nation (but consistently does very badly at international competitions, haha Made In China...). Japan has the most school boy rugby players in the world. New Zealand has the most amateur club team players.
It is a growing sport in Korea, Canada, Taiwan, Romania, India, Eastern Europe, Northern Europe an South-East Asia, as well as of course in the The USA.
Most of the early spread of rugby is attributable to British colonialism, in countries from Argentina to New Zealand to South Africa. In Australia there was a mix of settler colonisation and colonisation by convicts. There the sport split into Australian Rules football (which is related to Irish Gaelic football, and quite different) and the original rugby. This is rather like the split in the US, where anti-British colonial feeling led to the creation of baseball and Amercian football from their root sports cricket and rugby.
In the UK, within rugby, there was a schism during the beginning of the labour movement, and Rugby Union divided from Rugby League. Union was a sport of private schools, while Rugby League became the sport of the miners, working class and labourers. Rugby League is a lot more physical, hard hitting; less technical, and with less specialised positions than rugby. Rugby League is remains very popular in two states of Australia, and in traditional mining and industrial parts of the UK. However Rugby Union is a truely international sport, although not yet on a par with soccer or basketball.

For a list of rugby playing nations that rate, check out the international rankings list at:
http://wrr.live555.com/

The US has been climbing well over the last 5 years. Still loses to Canada though... perhaps not for long, if there are more guys like you getting into the sport.

You can also have a look at the world IRB (International Rugby Board - like FIFA is for soccer)
http://www.irb.com/en/World+Rankings/world+rankings+full.htm

Current rugby globally -
There is currently the 6 Nations Rugby Tournament going on in Europe, between France, England (the last Rugby World Cup winners), Italy, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
http://www.6-nations-rugby.com/

The Super 14 season (between 14 professional club sides from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, which stand out as 3 of the strongest rugby nations in the world) has also just begun in the Southern Hemisphere, as it comes into autumn there.
http://www.super14.com/

It is Rugby World Cup year, and it's on in France this year. See -
http://www.rugbyworldcup.com/EN/home

And in Hong Kong now there is the Sevens Rugby tournament. Sevens Rugy is a faster running version of the game, more open, with only half the players. Check out the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament, which is on in March.
http://www.hksevens.com/index.html

Sevens is the national sport of Fiji. They always kick ass at it.

Beyond this, there is also Touch Rugby, a no-tackle rugby variation, that is becoming a strong sport in it's own right. It was originally just a fun training game.
http://www.touchrugby.com/

Basically Rugby Union is king and global, growing all over. In most of the main playing nations it's a professional sport.

Rugby League is mostly big in Australia and the UK, but has been professional for a couple of decades.

Sevens Rugby is an off-shoot, and so is Touch Rugby; they're kind of rugby-lite, but good fun.

Aussie Rules Football and American Football grew out of Rugby Union, but are quite different sports now.

I'm glad you're getting into it. Rugby's a great sport, exciting to watch, even more exciting to play. Pure adrenalin, full contact and a whole lot more inclusive and less waiting around than American football.
We've just had a guy from Chicago join our club side here in Hiroshima. He used to be a safety in American football, and now he's loving rugby. But it's all good mate. Go hard!

What is the best TV for bright rooms?

I have a very bright (big windows on 2 sides) reck room on the South West side of my house. This TV will be used for sports most of the time! I am looking for a TV in the rage of 52 to 70 inches that will give the best picture with out the glare. I am also not looking to spend 3k on a new set. I would like to keep it under 2000.00. You help is appreciated !

Have a great day and thank you for your answers!

Answer
The general consensus is that LCD's are best for bright rooms! Not always true!

I've seen LCD's that reflect horribly and Plasma's that don't reflect a thing! If you're looking to not spend a fortune, stay away from LED LCD's! They're at a huge premium right now($2,000+)! If you go regular LCD, make sure to go to a store that has a lot of different models on display...just to make sure there's no glare!

However...i recommend a Panasonic Plasma TV! Most new models of Plasma's have anti-reflective coatings on them that reduce glare to almost nothing. Plus...they are the most affordable HDTV right now and they have the best picture quality! They have the highest native contrast ratios(40,000:1) and the fastest response times(.001ms) as well as fastest refresh rates(600hz)! Making them the best with fast motion content like sports, movies & gaming!

Here's what i recommend for you. It's the highest rated HDTV series in the world right now(Panasonic's V10 series)! http://reviews.cnet.com/best-high-definition-tvs/?tag=leftColumnArea1.0

Panasonic 50" 1080p(TC-P50V10): http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9317205&type=product&id=1218095840085

These are also very, very good TV's:

Panasonic 58" 1080p(TC-P58S1): http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9431279&type=product&id=1218104303192

Hope this helps!

I'm in the market for a 60 to 70 inch LCD or plasma. which do you recommend?

wolverin02

I'm willing to spend a bit (3-4k) but I want the best picture quality for the price. Its going in a well lit room with lots of windows so I prefer a brighter one.

Answer
I will tell you that if you plan on putting it in a bright room I wouldn't recommend a Plasma. Whether the TV is a 32" or a 65" it still has 2 million pixels. All that you have done is stretch the pixels...on a plasma this would not be a problem because of the refresh rate (600Hz or 0.001ms) which is a 1000 x's faster then the fastest LCD which has a refresh rate of 240Hz or 3ms.

When you have pixels that big the LCD cannot refresh fast enough for you not to see pixelation during fast-action movies or sports. Plasma however being so fast you cant really notice any pixelation(bubbles around fast movement).

Being that you are going to be putting this in a bright room I dont recommend plasma because of the glass. You are safe with a 55" LED LCD with a 240Hz refresh rate. One that I might recommend is the UN55B8000 or UN55B8500 which are Samsung's Top Model LED LCD's.

LED LCD have almost as good of colors as a plasma, so your not losing much(if any)contrast by going with the LED LCD.

Best of luck to you on your purchase!

What makes 3d led tv better than others like it?

Answer
There has been a lot of hype and confusion surrounding the introduction of "LED" Televisions. Even many marketing representatives and sales professionals that should know better are falsely explaining what an LED Television is to their prospective customers.

To set the record straight, it is important to note that the LED designation refers to the backlight system used in some newer LCD Televisions, not the chips that produce the image content.

LCD chips and pixels do not produce their own light. In order for an LCD television to produce a visible image the LCD's pixels have to be "backlit". For more specifics on the backlighting process needed for LCD Televisions,

LED TVs are still LCD TVs. It is just that these new sets use LED backlights rather than the fluorescent-type backlights used in most other LCD TVs.

In other words, LED TVs should actually be labeled LCD/LED TVs.

How LED Technology is Used In LCD TVs

The are currently two main ways that LED backlighting is applied in LCD flat panel televisions.

One type of LED backlighting is referred to as Edge Lighting. In this method, a series LED backlights are placed along the outside edges of the screen. The light is then dispersed across the screen. The advantage of this method is that the LED/LCD TV can be made very thin. On the other hand, the disadvantage of Edge lighting is that black levels are not as deep and the edge area of the screen has a tendency to be brighter than the center area of the screen.

The other type of LED backlighting is referred to as Full-Array. In this method, several rows of LEDs are placed behind the entire surface of the screen. The advantage is that these sets can employ "local dimming". Local dimming means that each LED or a specific group of LEDs can be turned on and off independently within certain areas of the screen, thus providing more control of the brightness and darkness for each those areas, depending on the source material being displayed. On the other hand, LCD TVs that employ full array backlighting are thicker than LCD TVs that employ an Edge-lit LED light source.

If you are considering the purchase of an LED/LCD Television, find out which brands and models are currently using the Edge or Full Array method and take of a look at each type when you go shopping to see which type of LED backlighting looks best to you.

Whatâs the difference between the conventional TV technology and IPS technology?

Vinay Kuma

I read that IPS technology is better than conventional TV technology.

Answer
Conventional TV, lcd, led, 3d TVs are manufactured in VA panel by Sony, Panasonic Samsung and others. IPS technology is come in the year 1996 by Hitachi. At present LG is using IPS tech in lcd, led and 3d TV. Generally, it provides high brightness, bright and clear motion picture, and wide viewing angle.

is there such a thing as a flat screen tv/computer monitor combo?

led tv monitor combo image

judyblue_p

I would like to get a new TV in the den that could also double as a computer monitor and be able to hook up a gaming console as well. Is there such a device and what is it called? Thanks =)

Answer
Most LCD TVs (both CCFL lit and LED lit) have a VGA PC input, and even if they don't newer computers have DVI or HDMI out that can be connected to an HDMI in on the TV.

I am using my Vizio M260MV this way, as I am typing this answer on it now, it is my primary PC monitor.

All of my devices, PC, VCR, Blu-ray disk player, etc are hooked to my Onkyo TX-SR608 AVR (7.1 surround sound audio/video receiver) then from there to HDMI-1 on the TV.

Should I go with a 1080p Monitor/HDTV combo or go with a 720p HDTV?

TP53

I am looking at these models of Samsung:
http://reviews.costco.com/2070/11764823/samsung-samsung-27-class-1080p-led-hdtv-t27b350nd-reviews/reviews.htm?sort=reviewTextLength&dir=asc

http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/UN26EH4000FXZA

http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/UN26D4003BDXZA

Which should I choose? I am worried about what I have heard about the sound quality (being tinny with the monitor combo), picture quality (being better with IPS technology than with TN) and viewing angle quality (being poor viewing the monitor combo on the dresser from a lower elevation on my bed in my bedroom) of the monitor/hdtv combo vs what you get with the 720p hdtv. Plus, the monitor/hdtv combo has TN technology vs the regular HDTVs which have IPS technology. I do however like the fact that the monitor combo has 1080p high definition.

Answer
Neither will have great sound. At 26", you won't be able to tell the difference between 720 & 1080. Bear in mind that the monitor will not receive TV signals without an external box such as a cable or satellite box. I would go with the TV because it is IPS vs. TN.

Will the release of oled and 4k drop the price of regular tvs?

Original W

hello, i was wondering if anyone in the tv sales or home theatre communities thought that with the release of oled (organic light emiting diode) or 4k resolution tvs sometime in 2013, that the price of tvs that aren't oled or 4k will drop much like standard definition tvs dropped in price when high def came out? In case your wondering im looking at the price of a Panasonic Viera Tcp50st30. THANK YOU

Answer
Yes the prices will go down, but not all of a sudden. Like all other electronics, the prices are constantly going down. Even when HDTVs came out, the prices on standard television didn't dropped overnight. Also, OLEDs TVs and 4k TVs are still a novelty, with only very pricey model are available to the general public. It will take 2-3 years to become mainstream and to challenge the plasma/lcd/led prices.

This is especially true if you want to buy a very specific model, like your case. If you are willing to wait that model would be when the new models will come out (so the stores need to sell their old stock). This is usually in the February-April time frame.

How much do hdtv prices drop over a years time?

Tyler

Hello, I'm planning on saving up for a Samsung LED HDTV. I'd like it to be 55 inches or more, I don't really care to have smart technology, and I'd love for it to be one of the ultra slim ones. It seems for 55 inches I'll be paying about 1100 dollars, for 60 inches its 1300 dollars, and any more than that, they automatically add the smart technology so its 2,500 or above. But I was just wondering how much a tv's price may drop in about a year from now. I've seen that 55 inch LED's used to be 2200 dollars but now they are 800-1200. How much do these prices usually drop in about a year with the new technology?

This is the tv I plan on buying:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+60%26%2334%3B+Class+-+LED+-+1080p+-+120Hz+-+HDTV/6847446.p?id=1218809261672&skuId=6847446

Answer
It's a tough thing to figure.

A particular model that you like may have a limited shelf-life. Manufacturers tend to make new models in order to keep prices up. Though the price of model 55-123LED (making this model number up) may be $1500 right now...conventional wisdom means that this model should be cheaper next year. The problem is that the manufacturer stops making this model and replaces it with the 55-321LED. Though it is completely identical to the old one...it is a 2013 model and therefore will still be worth the $1500 as a 'current' model.

The best time to purchase last years model is just before/just after the new ones hit the shelves. Stores will cut prices to make room for the new ones. If you wait to long though...you will find last years models hard to find.

A couple of tips for you:
A Good sale can happen anytime. It doesn't have to be Black Friday, Columbus Day, etc. Keep an eye on weekly ads from the major retailers in your area...as well as the online shops. With Price-Matching (which most major retailers offer)...anyone's sale could be a sale for your local store.

Don;t be afraid to ask for a discount. You have to believe that EVERYTHING is negotiable. You don;t have to be rude about it...just a simple "Is there any other way to save money on this TV?" I got 5% off my TV at Fry's Electronics simply by calling the manager over and asking if they're was any way he could save a few bucks (told him I was just a bit short on covering the full cost + taxes). Salesman/managers may know of coupons, etc that can save a few bucks.

Multiple audio devices but only one set of speakers?

best led tv under 1000 image

Brennon Hi

I have Sattelite TV, an XBox 360, PS2, and a PC all sharing the same display (LED TV) and would like them all the share the same set of speakers, a 5.1 CA Surround sound system... I'm aware i will most likely need some form of hardware device to do this. They dont have to play at the same time for obvious reasons, and am having a hard time finding a device or even what the name of such a device would be to start looking.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
What you need is called an AVR or Audio Video Receiver. The AVR will be your central hub controlling source devices and directing video to your display and sound to your speakers. How are you currently using so many devices on the one display? I assume the LED TV has multiple inputs, possibly multiple HDMI inputs and it has source selection so you can select which of your source devices has the display. The AVR will be similar, you will want to choose an AVR that includes enough source inputs to handle all your devices.

Your speakers are output devices as is your display. If your TV has a built in receiver for over the air broadcast then it may also be a source device so your AVR will need enough inputs to include it as well. You will no longer select the source with the TV, you will be able to leave the TV source fixed and select sources with the AVR. It will send any video information to your display and audio to your speakers. It will include amplification for the speakers with the exception of any subwoofer. This will typically be an unamplified output intended for use with an amplified subwoofer.

There are a number of brands to consider in AVR's, Denon, Onkyo, HK just to name a few. Prices range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars and you do tend to get what you pay for. For even higher quality you could select a preamp/processor instead of an AVR but this will require external amplification for all speakers. Preamp/processors typically range from just under $1000 to tens of thousands of dollars plus power amplifiers. Power amplifiers range from hundreds each to tens of thousands of dollars each. Generally, the more separate things are the more expensive and the better quality. Avoid AVR's with built in bluray players etc. These types of devices are typically inferior quality and if just one component fails, the whole thing becomes garbage.

What are some ways to drastically reduce my electric bill?

and what's the lowest I could get it down to (for a small apartment)? thanks for help

Answer
Plug things like your TV and computer into plug strips with switches on them and turn off the strip when you are not using them. Otherwise these electronic items continue to draw power in "standby mode" (you can tell because they will still feel warm to the touch even though they are turned "off"). Also switche ALL your light fixtures to compact fluorescents (CFL's) or LED's. The only exception is a bathroom where you turn the lights on and off a lot and don't leave them on for more than a half hour each time. In that case there is little or no savings since fluorescents have a high power draw on startup.

Use high wattage items like hair dryers, coffee makers and toaster ovens sparingly. if you have an electric range or oven, use a small microwave for cooking instead -- a 750 to 1000 watt microwave will cook food faster than these other appliances, using less power. On hot days, open windows and use fans instead of AC. Use drapes and/or the stick-on window film to reduce solar heating of the house in warm weather. If you have separate heat for the apartment, get a programmable thermostat so it turns it way down during the day while you are at work and at night. I turn my heat down to 55 Fahrenheit at night but use an electrica heated mattress pad to warm up the bed for half an hour before turning it, then a down comforter/duvet to sleep under that traps the heat so i am cozy all night. The programmable turns the heat back on at 7:00 am so I can get ready for work in a warm house, then it shuts down again untl just before I come home from work.

Get an energy efficient refrigerator -- the fridge is one of the biggest power hogs in your place.

I cut my electric bill in half by using these methods.

What LED or LCD TV is good for gaming?

JMukasa

Hi,
Currently in the market for a 30-39 inch TV for my bedroom, with the viewing distance being 10 feet from my bed and a $250-$500 budget. I will be using it for movies, watching sports, gaming (with the new ps4, new xbox and my GFs xbox 360..the lower the input lag the better). I am thinking about a 1080p? I am hoping to keep this TV for a long time, since me and my GF are getting a place together next year. Does anybody know if Samsung TVs are good? LG? Those two brands caught my interest at BestBuy. I am also interested in the whole Smart TV thing but it isn't a must have me just a bonus. Please feel free to drop your 2 cents I am new to this whole TV thing

Found these 4 on Best Buy:

Samsung - 32" Class (31-1/2" Diag.) - LED - 1080p - 60Hz - HDTV
Model: UN32EH5000FXZA

Samsung - 37" Class (37" Diag.) - LED - 1080p - 60Hz - HDTV

Answer
(Boy am I glad you asked before buying)

Those models are all bad for gaming.

You have 2 problems:

LCD panels have motion blur with fast moving objects. To reduce the problem, the better models offer "120 hz" refresh which cuts the problem in half. All your selections are only 60 hz so you are guaranteed to have motion blur.

You have decided on a 1080 panel because it must be 'better' - right? In truth you cannot see a difference in the picture on a 720 vs 1080 panel if the sizes are below about 40 inches.

The recommended seating distance for a 39" display is 4.4 feet according to the THX rules, but you are sitting 10 feet away?

Your girl's xbox has games formatted for a 720 display so the television will have to take time to up-convert every frame of video to 1080. This can take a sizable amount of time and create an effect called "Gamer Lag".

BASICALLY: All the models you have selected will be HORRIBLE for what you want to do and how far away you are sitting.

You want a Plasma display to eliminate motion blur.
You want a 720 panel to reduce gamer lag.
You want a name brand because they tend to use faster electronics which can also reduce gamer lag.

Look for a non-smart Plasma by Panasonic or Samsung.

SMART TELEVISION

The higher end Samsung models do a good job with their smart apps. For everything else - one of the small external media servers like the Western Digital TV Live box ($90) or the Roku box ($60) give you more apps, get better support and work a lot better than the 'smart' televisions or bluray players.

Save money by looking for the non-smart models, then add a WD box later for streaming.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I just bought a 32 inch LCD TV of Videocon two days ago just for Rs.24000. Let me give you some advice regarding LED and LCD TV's.

I saw LCD and LED TV's of all brands with all technical details.
My advice to you that don't buy LED TV. There is nothing available like original LED TV's in India. They are almost fake. Buying LED TV would be a total waste of money. You won't get the natural color appearance in LED TV and they usually are in the range of Rs.50000.

You should only go with the FULL HD 1080 LCD TV.

In LCD's also, let me tell you that you should go only with the LCD's of Videocon. No doubt, the LCD TV's of Samsung, Sansui and Sony are also very good, but they will charge you 10-20 thousand more for the same TV. Why give more money only for brand name when you are getting the same TV at a much lower cost.

So I would advice you to buy Videocon LCD TV if you want it low cost and best. Buy LCD of VRL series and not VLL series. I guarantee you 100% satisfaction, as I myself have bought it.

LED is a complete waste of money. Sony has taken back 1000 LED TV's back due to defects. Buying LED would be advisable only after 1-2 years.

Though if you want to buy LED anyway, you must only buy of Sony and no other company like Videocon. But I don't think LED's come in the range of 45000 Rs.

The best one in LCD would be Videocon VRL 32EBN or VRL32 FBM or VRL32GBM. I have bought EBN series.

Thanks, hope it helps you in buying.
