Sam

I have a 40 inch Samsung led TV. I got it mainly for good gaming graphics, but it's not giving me really good results. I've seen other tv's have amazing gaming picture quality. How can I make the quality of gaming graphics better on an led TV?

Answer
You do not have a "LED" tv. You have an LCD tv with LED back-lighting. This it to improve black-levels.

For gaming - you also need 120 hz to reduce motion blur.

You may have failed to go to your game system and tell it you have a HDTV with 1080 resolution.

You may also need to properly adjust the Brightness, Contrast, Color. Get a Pixar movie and go to the disk setup menu. You will find test patterns and instructions for setting the basic TV settings.

Get your setup correct and it should improve things.

Note: Televisions in the stores are set to nearly 100% Brightness and Contrast to make them 'eye catching'. However this tends to loose fine details and colors will then bloom or expand into other areas. While it looks impressive for the 10-60 seconds you walk buy - it does not look good for long term viewing. So do NOT compare your screen to one you saw in a store display.

Hope this helps.

How to hook up a sound bar to a led HDTV with no optical audio out.?

Daniel

Recently purchased a samsung led 60 inch. Went to hook up my sound bar to it and noticed that the tv had no optical audio out commonets. This is definitely a deal breaker for me. So if I can't find any solutions I'm going to go to best buy and exchange it. Is there a way around this? A way to connect my sound bar to the tv? Maybe optical audio out to a hdmi converter? I've never heard of one. But I'm assuming it could be out there. I don't really wanna connect the sound bar directly to a component besides the tv itself. Because I have a ps3, Xbox 360 and a blue ray player. It would be a little annoying to have to go and manually change it everytime I switch my source.

Answer
All the new Samsungs have on, what is the model number, most of the old ones do as well, But you need to use a converter plug

60hz or 120hz led tv samsung? I also heard that using a 120hz led tv gives you lag when gaming?

Answer
An LCD/LED will get some lag even with 120 hz. refresh rate... They tend to have a slow refresh rate, and lag is another problem with LCD/LED.....(Even with a high refresh rate..) Try the 'game' mode if you have it, it may halp the lag, but usually turns off the higher refresh rate..

How important is the refresh rate on LED tv's for picture quality?

Sherri

I'm looking to purchase a 45-50" flat screen tv. We will mostly watch digital cable on it (sports and movies). But we will purchase a blu-ray player to hook up to it as well. Thanks.

Answer
The refresh rate does not really FIX the inherent slow response of an LED or LCD TV.. If you want no lag or blurr on fast action...go Plasma.!!

Hi, I am currently playing my Xbox 360 on a 32 inch samsung LED tv. Right now I'm playing at 1080p (1920x1080) but looks kinda bad. When I could go to console settings, what should I put the following at, HDTV Settings, Reference levels, and HDMI Color Space; to ensure that I get the best graphics available.

Answer
The settings are there because every TV is different -- there's no one 'best' setting that works for everybody. Play with the settings and see which ones work best for you with your TV.

Most 360 games are 720p and just get scaled up to 1080p, so they're not always going to look the greatest.

Would a 720p LED TV have a better picture than a 1080p LCD TV?

y2kbug77

I'm looking to get a TV for college and I'm going for either a 26 or 32 inch. I know there are alot of new technologies in LED TVs and I was wondering if these technologies would give the LED an advantage over an LCD TV that is 1080p compared to the LEDs lower resolution of 720p.

Answer
any tv smaller than 42" you can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080. So get the LED because of the better technology behind it. (Low energy, deeper blacks, higher visual quality)

Answer
This is why I believe that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is better than the iPhone 5
1. It is quicker (1.9 quad core processor/ 1.6ghz Octa core vs 1.3 dual core processor)

2. Microsd- you can expand the memory with a 64gb microsd. This a cheaper way to expand your memory and you can have a 16 gb S4 and still have more storage than iphone 5 if you get a 64gb microsd.

3. USB OTG- you can read usb keys no problem with an adapter so you can check out what's on them so you don't have to put your computer on.

4. Microusb charger- Better than the lighting connector as you can get them easily and cheaply but also you might have it from other devices as it is becoming standard for smartphones to use micro-usb chargers.

5. Removable battery- This means you can replace the battery if you run out of charge when you are around unlike the iphone 5 which you have to charge or bring an external charger and charge it from there, however this is an awkward way of charging your phone. Also the removable battery can help you prevent water damage as you can remove the battery if it falls in water, thus reducing the chances of water damage.

6. NFC- Want to transfer a music album quicker than bluetooth, well now you can with NFC. You can also use Tectiles 2 to make your life easier

7. Customizable- Change launcher(Are you bored, get a new launcher that suits you and your personality), custom ROM your phone and have access to apps specifically made for rooted devices directly on the play store. You control the device so that it suits you.

8. Dropbox- Love cloud storage well Samsung is offering 50gb free of charge to S4 owners for 2 years on Dropbox. Backup music, video, photos(this can be done automatically), documents etc. Who doesnât want this amount of free cloud storage?(You have to complete a certain amount of steps to get the free storage but none requires any credit card details or anything to complicated) (N.B Not everyone will be offered this bonus as carriers have been known to have stopped Samsung from offering this to customers)

9. Screen- Itâs bigger but not too big. It has 441ppi vs iPhone 5âs 326ppi plus the Amoled screen creates beautiful colors.
I also found no problems when using one hand, and I have medium hands if not small hands. Also I mostly use the Note 2 and it fits in all my pockets, suit trousers, jeans, tracksuits so the S4 will certainly fit in virtually all pockets

10. Android features-Widgets, live wallpapers, Google Now and all the beauty of android, widgets on the lockscreen etc

11. Samsung added features
a. Smartstay- won't turn the screen off if you are still looking at it.
b. Smartpause- pauses a video when you turn around and turns it back on when you turn back
c. Eye controlled webpage scrolling
d. Airview- check link to learn more http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-Galaxy-S-4-display-Air-View-and-Air-Gesture-demoed-on-video_id40881
e. Infrared TV remote
f. External temperature and humidity sensors
g. Use the phone while using gloves
h. S Health- useful for health enthusiasts
i. S Translator- itâs all in the name a translator
j. Blocking Mode- activate it to block things like calls, notifications, messages, LED indicator etc
k. Power Saving Mode- Can be used to save power by limiting the processor speeds, turning of Haptic feedback, using less power for the screen and changing the color in the stock browser and email app
l. Home screen modes- for beginners it makes the home screen setup easier
m. Etc- I could go on but check the link to see even more features http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-Galaxy-S4-10-exclusive-or-little-known-features-review_id41541

12. Camera- It has a 13mp camera vs iPhone 5âs 8mp. It has more features than than the iPhoneâs camera which makes it even better.( http://www.businessinsider.com/htc-one-galaxy-s4-iphone-5-camera-test-2013-4 this link shows how the S4 has the best smartphone camera)
a. Dual shot- take photos from both cameras so that you can include the photographer in a photo
b. Photo with audio message- record a message before or after a photo to add to a photo
c. Eraser shot- can remove unwanted moving content
d. Drama shot- takes pictures of a moving object and puts the moving object through the whole picture
e. More but those are the best

13. Multitasking- watch videos while online, write an email while watching a video, send a message while surfing the web, you can split the screen in two so you can multitask without a bother, this cannot be done on the iPhone 5.

14. Durability- The S4 does not suffer from scratches like the iphone 5 where the back of the phone is aluminium and scratches really easy, the S4 does not suffer this fate.

For 11 more reasons check this link https://plus.google.com/101311389110168438082/posts/8wbR6k15BfU

Hope this helped
Enjoy your new phone (no matter which one it is)

What Tv should i buy?

IDK

Hi I am looking to buy a new tv, but I am having some problems. I want to buy the panasonic vt60 for the colors, motion, and black levels. The only thing keeping me from buying it is the line bleed, fan noise, and green dithering that show up in the picture where it isn't completely dark. I bought the panasonic gt50 last year and loved it but it had the problems I listed. The green dithering would have been acceptable if it couldn't have been seen from a normal viewing distance while in THX mode. Anyways now i am considering led TVs and was wondering what 2013 led tv can best compete with plasma? Right now I am considering the Sony 900a model. Is there a better 1080p Led tv than the sony?

Answer
The Samsung 8000 series would be a much better tv than the Sony. Pesonally, I have nevver owned a Sony product that have last more than 3 years. Purchased the first DVD players model 7000 and the 7700 both are the price of $1,100 each and the first HDTV 34" CRT and they all did not last more than e years. The new Panasonic ZT series Plasma tv is reviewed by Home Theater Magazine. This is compared to the old Pioneer Elite KURO tv. I would still recommend the Panasonic. I do use 4 Panasonic Plasma tv along with 3 LCD tv and never had one issue. Hope this will help you out.

How easy is it to get a LED TV online on Black Friday?

Anthony

I always hear about these great deals on LED and plasma TV's on Black Friday. 47" TV's go for $300, etc. I was never one of the people to go out at midnight on Black Friday. However, I've been hearing online is starting to carry the same sales that are in the store, except online. I've never had much luck on Cyber Monday.

Does anyone have any luck buying TV's or electronics online on Black Friday? Are there generally a lot in stock online or will you need to be the first one logged on at midnight?

I'm looking for a big screen LED TV and I'm debating waiting until Black Friday to buy it, however, if I hear that it's difficult to obtain one, I'll just buy one in the next few weeks.

Thanks guys!

Answer
One problem is that you may find a lot of lower end flat screens for sale at very low prices and if you wish to use a comp to link to the TV or to play or use video consoles on the TV it might not refresh or have the correct fast action movement responses. If you're looking for just something to watch TV then many of the low end make/models will be fine.

For example they sell a low end make called Sigmac stores have sold thousands of the 42 INCH TV's and most customers are happy with the product bec they mostly wanted a big screen flat screen TV and they claim it suited their needs. The same model won't play fast action movements very well unless you know how to adjust all the comp video card, TV or game console settings up properly according to the different file formats or games etc.

What I've found is here in Canada Black Fri sales seem to be the best prices according to Xmas and Boxing Day sales etc.I've seen Walmarts for example offer a 32 inch RCA for 168-180 bucks but you have to be at the store way before they open and then you'll be asked what items you may wish to buy and then be given a slip that is for say the TV you want. This means they might only have 10-20 of these models in stock and as little as one of another TV that is on sale for some great price of 500 bucks etc.Now online the main warehouse may have a lot more in stock but of course first customers to place their orders will get the best results.I've also seen free shipping offered especially if you live in the United States and are ordering from a USA site.

Personally what I'd recommend is that you make up a list of all you want to use the new TV for and then figure out if the specs of the TV's you might wish to buy. List and compare and the different makes/models features, ports and over all specs. For example you may wish to have a fast refresh rate and some models will only be 60hz and others will offer 60-120-160hzs settings or different ranges of it's Hz capabilities. The resolution capabilities are also vital so you need to keep that in mind and some might offer resolutions of 1920 x 1080p.Even the Contrast Ratio can be misleading bec it may indicate 2,000,000:1 ratio but the true quality of the TV might not match up.Next you'd have to consider the Response Time and it should be that the lower the number indicated the better Response Time.A feature that is related to this is Game mode etc of a TV.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way I'd suggest to look on different sites and in the stores to see what makes/models are sold that are within 20-40% over your current budget and then compare the specs and customer reviews to decide which TV's you may be truly desiring to buy.Samsung, LG,Panasonic Toshiba are all good makes but you have to also consider that every make has different models and some models are just too expensive or they are great for the suited purpose and some work great that are in fact in the lowest model price ranges.Note if you can wait then I bet you'll save some cash bec prices to drop on many Makes/models/items during the up-coming Black Fri sales etc.

What's the difference between plasma and LCD TVs these days?

circusmort

I've noticed a few more plasma TVs showing up for sale in stores - considerably cheaper than LCDs of equivalent size and features, so what's the catch?

Answer
After all, there are so many acronyms and buzzwords to wrap your head around, such as 1080p, 120/240Hz, 24p, HDMI and LED backlighting. Huh?

Along with deciding how big a screen you want (which is usually tied to the size of your budget and the dimensions of your room), the next choice should be between LCD.LCD (LED Backlit) or Plasma â and all have their merits. Here, we'll describe each of these formats, and also point out their shortcomings.

LCD

What is it?
lcd tv 120mhzSimilar to your laptop computer's monitor, flat-panel LCD televisions use a liquid crystal display to produce a sharp and bright picture; these crystals are sandwiched between two panes of polarized glass, which are stimulated by an electric current and illuminated by fluorescent tubes housed behind the glass. Some newer LCD TVs, however, use LED-backlighting instead. LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, translate to a better-looking picture (see photo).

Pros
There are a number of advantages to buying a LCD televisions. For one, with more than three-quarters of all televisions embracing this technology, there is a lot of choice when it comes to manufacturers, models and sizes (13- to 103-inches, in fact). Competition, of course, breeds more aggressive pricing, too, which is good news for the consumer.

Flat-panel LCD televisions are also very thin, light and energy efficient, and are ideal for rooms with plenty of ambient light, which, for example, comes through large windows as they tend to absorb rather than reflect light (reflected light can obscure your view of the screen).

Cons
Until recently, LCD TVs didn't handle fast motion images as well as plasma TVs, resulting in a somewhat blurred image. Newer LCD TVs, though, have added technologies such as 120Hz frame doubling (or 240Hz frame quadrupling) to smooth out motion. It's still not as good as plasma, but much better than before. Also, LCD TVs used to have problems showing dark blacks (because a light was still on behind the pixel showing black, resulting in a more greyish hue). Many LCD televisions today use local-dimming with LED-backlighting (see next section) for improved contrast ratios (whiter whites and blacker blacks) - but, keep in mind, this is not an issue associated with plasma TVs.

LCD (LED Backlit)

What is it? Not a Different Type of TV

led lcd tv backlighting backlitItâs tempting to think LEDs belong in a completely separate category beside LCD and plasma TVs, but in reality, an LED television is just a type of LCD TV. The proper term would really be "LED-backlit LCD TV," but that always seems to get truncated to "LED TV" in everyday conversation, perpetuating the confusion.

To understand how LEDs function in an LCD TV, think of an actual liquid-crystal panel as the plastic pegs in a Lite Brite. They hold a translucent image, but without a powerful backlight to punch through and light it up like a signboard, youâre not going to see much. On your old Lite Bright, an inefficient incandescent light did the job, but pretty unevenly. On a typical LCD TV, fluorescent lights provide the backlighting through a special plastic sheet called a light guide that distributes light from a fluorescent tube evenly over the surface of the TV. On an LED-backlit TV, fluorescent tubes are replaced with light-emitting diodes â LEDs â the same technology that probably lights up your digital watch, the buttons on your monitor, and the indicators on your stereo. They can be either situated along the edges of the TV like a fluorescent tube, or arranged directly behind the screen in a grid. But what difference does it make, and why would anyone spend so much money on it?

The Benefit of LEDs

The most obvious reason LEDs have fallen into favor in LCD TVs: theyâre simply more efficient. Although fluorescent lights do a decent job converting electricity to light in the big scale of things, LEDs perform even better. Typically, manufacturers claim an efficiency improvement of up to 30 percent over fluorescent-based sets, which can add up significantly over the lifetime of a TV, especially on larger screens that use more juice to begin with.

LEDs are also much smaller than tubes, even after accounting for the number of them needed to light an entire TV. That means LED-backlit televisions can be manufactured significantly thinner than their tube cousins. For instance, most of the ultra-thin televisions that measured under an inch thick at CES used LED backlights, because they add very little depth to the profile. Though commercial variants arenât quite as dramatically thin as these prototypes, theyâre significantly skinnier than their fluorescent-backlit counterparts, making them some of the most chic and living-room-friendly HDTVs out there.

For home theater enthusiasts, LEDs only matter for one reason: image quality. Because fluorescent tubes must light the entire screen evenly, designers have no way to vary the backlighting intensity in different parts of the

Sony does have a line of 70" LCDs: KDL-70XBR series. Not sure if they're still making any or not.

Jag

I am thinking whether to spend $200 more on an Samsung LED 120 Hz TV vs Samsung LCD 120 Hz Tv. Do you think the picture quality of an LED TV will be better when watching HD Channels on Dish Network?

Answer
The claim that "LED gives better picture quality than LCD" is one of the most common myths in this business.

In the first place, an "LED" set is nothing more than an LCD set with a newer type of backlighting. They both have the same LCD display.

In the second place, lab tests and owner reviews demonstrate that the important factor in picture quality is the specific model of a set, not its brand or whether it uses LED backlighting. While LED technology does provide advantages, there definitely are conventional LCD sets with better picture quality than certain low-rated "LED" sets. You need to carefully look at test results and user reviews in order to make a valid decision.

So the bottom line for you, in my opinion, is no--the picture quality difference, if any, won't justify another $200, unless the specs, reviews, etc. of the cheaper set suggest otherwise.

Which 40 inch LCD/LED TV is good for taking to India from US?

I am planning to take back one LCD/LED TV 40 inch from US to India. Please suggest make & model.
I will use DIsc/ Direct to Home (DTH) connection in India, so NTSC /PAL will not be a issue.

Bad Idea since US and India use different standards.

If you insist, you need to buy a multi-standard (NTSC/PAL) TV which cost much more.

how does it works....should the Hz be very hiigh or vey low?
what if the Hz are very High
what if the Hz are very Low?
what defines a high quality lcd tv

Answer
The HZ is only important on LCD and LED tvs, if you are going to be watching allot of sports and playing video games. The higher HZ of 120 and 240 will reduce the blur motion on fast action moves. Plasma does not have any problem with blur motion and they are less expensive that the LCD or LED tvs. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs. You will notice that Panasonic has more Plasma tv being recommended than any brand in the market today. Also in November issue of the magazine it named the Panasonic V series tv (Plasma) as the best tv in the market for 2010. If you read yahoo questions, you will notice that 95% of tv problems comes from LCD tv and 95% of those are the bargain price tvs. You get what you pay for. Hope this will help you out.

The Samsung 8500 series LED tv would be the top end. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs. You are not going to see any LG tv being recommended. Personally, the Panasonic Plasma ZT series would be a much better tv. All my tv are from Panasonic 4 Plasma and 2 LCD. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. How big is Rugby in countries besides America?

flonkas

I love the game its awesome and our school just started a team. Rugby is not big here at all. Theres 1 store every thousand miles. Its never on tv at all and No one knows about it. How different is it in other countries? detailed answers please

Answer
Rugby is the fastest growing sport in several countries globally. It started at Rugby School in England, a public boys school that is now effectively a private schoool.
Rugby is the national sport of New Zealand and Wales. It is very popular in two states of Australia, in South Africa (particularly among the white population), in Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and Ireland, where games are usually televised free-to-air. It's big among parts of the population in Argentina, Uruguay, England and Scotland, and is a well rooted minor sport in France, Italy and Japan.
It is the official sport of the Chinese army, which has the most rugby players of any nation (but consistently does very badly at international competitions, haha Made In China...). Japan has the most school boy rugby players in the world. New Zealand has the most amateur club team players.
It is a growing sport in Korea, Canada, Taiwan, Romania, India, Eastern Europe, Northern Europe an South-East Asia, as well as of course in the The USA.
Most of the early spread of rugby is attributable to British colonialism, in countries from Argentina to New Zealand to South Africa. In Australia there was a mix of settler colonisation and colonisation by convicts. There the sport split into Australian Rules football (which is related to Irish Gaelic football, and quite different) and the original rugby. This is rather like the split in the US, where anti-British colonial feeling led to the creation of baseball and Amercian football from their root sports cricket and rugby.
In the UK, within rugby, there was a schism during the beginning of the labour movement, and Rugby Union divided from Rugby League. Union was a sport of private schools, while Rugby League became the sport of the miners, working class and labourers. Rugby League is a lot more physical, hard hitting; less technical, and with less specialised positions than rugby. Rugby League is remains very popular in two states of Australia, and in traditional mining and industrial parts of the UK. However Rugby Union is a truely international sport, although not yet on a par with soccer or basketball.

For a list of rugby playing nations that rate, check out the international rankings list at:
http://wrr.live555.com/

The US has been climbing well over the last 5 years. Still loses to Canada though... perhaps not for long, if there are more guys like you getting into the sport.

You can also have a look at the world IRB (International Rugby Board - like FIFA is for soccer)
http://www.irb.com/en/World+Rankings/world+rankings+full.htm

Current rugby globally -
There is currently the 6 Nations Rugby Tournament going on in Europe, between France, England (the last Rugby World Cup winners), Italy, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
http://www.6-nations-rugby.com/

The Super 14 season (between 14 professional club sides from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, which stand out as 3 of the strongest rugby nations in the world) has also just begun in the Southern Hemisphere, as it comes into autumn there.
http://www.super14.com/

It is Rugby World Cup year, and it's on in France this year. See -
http://www.rugbyworldcup.com/EN/home

And in Hong Kong now there is the Sevens Rugby tournament. Sevens Rugy is a faster running version of the game, more open, with only half the players. Check out the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament, which is on in March.
http://www.hksevens.com/index.html

Sevens is the national sport of Fiji. They always kick ass at it.

Beyond this, there is also Touch Rugby, a no-tackle rugby variation, that is becoming a strong sport in it's own right. It was originally just a fun training game.
http://www.touchrugby.com/

Basically Rugby Union is king and global, growing all over. In most of the main playing nations it's a professional sport.

Rugby League is mostly big in Australia and the UK, but has been professional for a couple of decades.

Sevens Rugby is an off-shoot, and so is Touch Rugby; they're kind of rugby-lite, but good fun.

Aussie Rules Football and American Football grew out of Rugby Union, but are quite different sports now.

I'm glad you're getting into it. Rugby's a great sport, exciting to watch, even more exciting to play. Pure adrenalin, full contact and a whole lot more inclusive and less waiting around than American football.
We've just had a guy from Chicago join our club side here in Hiroshima. He used to be a safety in American football, and now he's loving rugby. But it's all good mate. Go hard!

How much i need to pay as customs duty if i carry LG LED LCD TV 50'' smart, 3D to India from US?

Gangadhara

Cost of TV in US is ~$800.
After 2013-08-26, Indian govt amended a law that all flat panel TV's need to pay customes of 36.05% of actual indian rate of the same TV. Its very ambiguous by this news..below are my doubts

1.How Indian value of my TV calculated.
e.g
-i am taking a TV which was used one year in US
-If i am taking TV whose brand not found in India (my case is LG so there should not be issue)
- Indian TV's use PAL analog tuner but in US all TV's come with NTSC. how valuvation is done? i need to spend INR10000 more to buy good converter for this. I mean to say is that fair to calculate price directly to indian product.

2. If i stay in US more than 2 or 3 years and take used TV, how it will help me.

Can anyone say how much i need to pay as custom duty for my TV with above scenario.
There should some difference in calculating valuation on TV's from US and other Asia countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Dubai.
TV's from US have lot of constraint like its comes with NTSC and works with 110 v.
Whereas TV's from Singapore, Malaysia and Dubai can be used directly in India without any converter.
@shana

There are few airlines which reject baggae on weight alone. in that case i can pay extra money to take it.
E.g: British airways reject baggage on Weight as well as Dimension. Though weight is less than BA guidelines its wont fit in dimension . so we cant take this in BA.
- Emirates reject baggage only on weight. But we need to pay extra money to take this to india in Emirates.

If you are more than 2 years in USA you can avail Transfer of Residence (TR), if you are planning to return back for good . Even if you avail TR benefit, it's not certain whether you will pay reduced duty or not.
If you have used TV, the value will reduce much more and if you have receipt to prove your case that would help.

With Emirates they allow it to carry if you combine two baggage to make 107 inches (One piece 62 and another 45 inches W + D + H).

I recently bought an led tv that displays in 1080p the tv has an uneven backlight around all of its edges very notticible when loading netflix. I was wondering if I were to exchange it would the next tv be better, or do all leds have this issue to some extent?

Answer
Yes! My Samsung LED is uniform edge to edge...

Go back to the showroom and see if the one on display has that same unevenness. I bet it doesn't.

what is the difference between brands of hd tvs that have the same specs but different prices?

also what is the difference and what is better plasma, led, lcd? Will the tv come with everything i need to get broadcast hd? What is 720 vs 1080?

Answer
Remember that just because they have the "same specs" they may not be the same. Example: one of two similar TVs may have double the number of inputs (HDMI; component-red, green and blue; composite-red, white and yellow...)

720 vs 1080:

720 stands for the 720 horizontal scan lines of display resolution (also known as 720 pixels of vertical resolution).
1080 stands for the 1,080 horizontal scan lines of display resolution (also known as 1080 pixels of vertical resolution).
The more horizontal lines on a display the more detail it can show = better resolution.

p vs i

Interlaced Scan - Interlacing divides the horizontal scan lines of display into odd and even lines and then alternately refreshes the display between all of the odd lines and then all of the even lines.

Progressive Scan - scans the entire picture line by line. In other words, captured images are not split into separate fields like in interlaced scanning they are "whole" images. Think of this as the same way the film in a movie projector works at the cinema. Progressive Scan is considered to be better than Interlaced Scan.

LCD:

The so-called "LED TV" is an LCD TV. The only difference is the backlighting technology - the actual LCD panels are exactly the same as other LCD televisions. Traditional LCD TVs use CCFL backlights (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) - think thin fluorescent tubes with a diffusing panel inside to spread the light evenly around the screen. Meanwhile, "LED TVs" (or to be more precise, LED-lit LCD TVs) use LED elements for the lighting source (think "Lite Brite" pegs, but all of them white).

PROS:
Reflections and glare are much less of an issue, good choice for brightly lighted rooms, no risk of burn-in of static images, use somewhat less power than plasma sets

CONS:
Lower viewing angle, lower ability to display the deepest blacks, the image can lose contrast, look washed out, or lose color accuracy as you angle away from the center of the screen, most LCD TVs can't display deepest black or distinguish subtle shades of gray and black, fast-moving images might blur, uneven backlight brightness has been an issue with LCD TVs, but the use of LED backlighting instead of fluorescent lights in some new sets potentially enables them to more evenly distribute light across the back of the panel for more consistent brightness on all parts of the screen, LEDs also use less energy than conventional lamps.

Plasma:

PROS:
It's hard to beat the best plasma TV sets for accurate colors, deep blacks, great contrast, virtually unlimited viewing angle, and fast motion won't blur.

CONS:
Plasma TVs are fairly heavy, reflections from a plasma TV's shiny screen, static images displayed for extended periods can burn in temporarily, and could become permanent if you consistently leave the same pattern onscreen over a long period. But that seems to have been more of a problem with earlier plasma TVs.

TV Inputs:

For connecting things like DVD players, Blu-ray Players, and gaming systems. List from best quality picture to the least.

HD Video:
HDMI - Does video and audio in one cable
DVI
Component - Red, Green, Blue

SD Video:
S-Video
Composite - Red, White, Yellow

Other things to consider when buying:

One of the most critical considerations with any TV is the number and type of inputs it has for hooking up devices to your TV. Also keep in mind where those connections are - front, side or rear- for quick hook ups. The connections a TV has is usually why two similar TVs can vary so much in price. Does the LCD TV have 120Hz or 240Hz technology - this helps to reduce the tendency to blur during scenes with fast motion, such as sports programs. Anti-glare screens - several plasma manufacturers are now offering screens with anti-glare surfaces, which can help reduce reflectivity off the screen's surface. If the sales person talks about contrast ratio - the higher the better - keep in mind that there a several ways to measure this and each manufacturer uses a different method, so it is really only good for comparing models for that manufacturer.

As for the TV coming with everything you need to get broadcast hd, that depends on what you mean by that. How do you want to receive your channels? Over-the-Air, cable, or Satellite? For over-the-air the TV would be good to go assuming you already have an antenna. Don't count on "rabbit ears" you are much better off with a roof top antenna. For cable or satellite you will likely need to get a set-top/converter box from your service provider to receive HD channels from them.

Last, and this is in my opinion, I feel that plasma TVs give you the best quality picture from a non-HD source. Remember not everything is broadcast in HD. This standard definition source it not going to look as good on an HDTV as it would on a SDTV.

Shopping for a flat-screen TV. Mostly for watching regular TV channels, Movies and Sports.
Not really for Video Games.

Which has a better quality and what brand would you recommend? We are looking for about 40 in size.
Tell me more about the LED screen, I want to know all of my options before purchasing.

Answer
It used to be that plasma was the hands-down winner on fast action like sports, while LCD's were better for bright rooms. These differences have largely gone away - and now there's LED'S. Do some research on the web (like PC World, CNET, etc.) to read pro reviews, owner's reviews, etc., but don't drive yourself nuts. If possible in your area, after some research, go to a big retailer and take a look - but hang onto your budget!

No matter what you buy, you'll probably love it. I'd also take a look at getting an extended warranty.
Take a minute to ask about HDMI cables and stuff, too. And then there's Blu-Ray. And - oh, never mind.

I'm a happy Toshiba owner, times three.

Happy Holidays

What is the best 46" LED 240hz 1080p 3D TV available? is it a sony, samsung or something else?

Jose

What is the exact name of it. I'm looking for a tv with outstanding picture quality that is good for regular tv watching and especially for sports. Any suggestions? no budget, so no need to worry about how good it is for its money or anything...thanks.

Answer
Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs, along with the pro and con of each technology. Plasma tv is still considered to have the best picture quality of all tv in the market. Panasonic is the only plasma tv they recommend. As for 3D, it has not been a big hit with consumers. Keep in mind that to watch in 3D you will need the following: 3D HDTV, 3D blu ray disc player, 3D blu ray movies (at this time there are only around 110 title available and they are mainly animated movies from Disney) and 3D glasses. The price of 3D is still very high. I never had a Sony product that have lasted me more than 3 years. The first DVD player model 7000 and the following year 7700 both priced at over $1,100 each and the first HDTV in the market. A Sony 34" CRT HDTV for the price of $6.400. If you read yahoo yahoo questions all the time, you will notice many issue with Sony. Look at a Panasonic 46" Plasma 3D HDTV or a Samsung. Hope this will help you out.

What can I put behind the TV to fill up the space?

best led tv viewing angle image

sugar.spyc

We finally got a new TV. We had our old CRT til now. To make sure we have a good viewing angle, the tv is placed in the corner of the room. Diagonally. The tv stand is about 45 cm in height and putting an LED tv on it in a corner looks kinda empty. Especially because there is nothing behind it. It's hard cuz you can see empty space at the back. Any ideas???
We can't really put the tv anywhere else.

Answer
I'd put nothing at all. When you actually watch the TV, you'll get hooked on the screen and forget about the space behind it very quickly.

But if you insist, the best idea is putting the TV inside a cabinet. Like this:

http://www.homelement.com/Media-Centers/Entertainment-Center/Copper-Canyon-LCD-Plasma-TV-Corner-Entertainment-Center-Parker-House-p-5628.html

Or if the cabinet is too expensive, some plants can fill up the space too.

How do you know if the viewing angle of a TV is good from the specifications?

DavidT

I'm trying to a buy a TV online, and I've been disappointed before because the viewing angle was really poor.

Answer
Viewing angles on LED and LCD TV's are usually fair to poor. If you want a good viewing angle, (up to 170 degrees....get a plasma.!!)

is plasma better if you dont care about its thickness and energy cost?

Might Guy

i saw 2 60in TVs, one is plasma and the one is LED, the plasma one is like $300 - 400 cheaper. i read some article about plasma vs led, they all say they have pros and cons. but what i see is plasma usually have 600hz while cheaper LED are 120hz. does Hz matters?

also, none of the reviews i read talks about the life span. Usually, which TV has longer life span? from your personal experience or opinion, would get a plasma or a LED? say i am gonna be watching mainly sport and some movies on the TV.

Answer
- Short answer: If you read any article reviews that always recommend Plasma. Plasma has better response times which leads to less ghosting/lag and bundle that with their refresh rates (hz) that also means little/no motion blur for fast moving objects. Most tv manufacturers may not bother with the life span specification because both Plasma and LCD can easily last 10 years (with little quality loss) or 20+ years before quality becomes a factor. The government made manufacturers post a yellow sticker on their tv's stating power consumption and you will see that newer Plasma tv's will probably only cost $50 (6 hours a day every day) more a year than LCD.

- I recommend Panasonic Plasma OR I recommend Samsung LED (better and/or expensive LED may not have the problems stated below because of additional technologies going into them). - http://reviews.cnet.com/best-tvs-picture-quality/
- Input lag for gamers: HD-TV may have more input lag if there is more processing going and how well the TV can process it. Example 1: Most PS3 or Xbox 360 video games are 720p, it would take processing power to upscale it to 1080p for a 1080p HD-TV (unless PS4 or Xbox one video games are 1080p it would be a good idea to get a 1080p HD-TV). Example 2: Interpolation and refresh rates can cause more processing too.ect = Gamer mode can turn off these processes to get less input lag.
- HD-TV viewing distance calculations: http://isthisretina.com/ OR http://www.thx.com/consumer/home-entertainment/home-theater/hdtv-set-up/ OR http://www.sony-asia.com/support/faq/47537 OR http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimum_HDTV_viewing_distance
- I am not going to talk about HD-TV features like 3D or smart HD-TV. Im not going to talk about projectors. Im not going to talk about the new OLED (RGB or W) HD-TV's.

- A plasma HD-TV is sometimes called an emissive display, the panel is actually self-lighting for each pixel. The display consists of two transparent glass panels with a thin layer of pixels sandwiched in between. Each pixel is composed of three gas-filled cells or sub-pixels (one each for red, green and blue). A grid of tiny electrodes applies an electric current to the individual cells, causing the gas (a mix of neon and xenon) in the cells to ionize. This ionized gas (plasma) emits high-frequency UV rays, which stimulate the cells' phosphors, causing them to glow the desired color.
= Better contrast = Plasma's have better black levels, but worse white levels. Plasma's are a emissive display which means better brightness accuracy and better color accuracy.
= Better viewing angles = Plasma is a emissive display, it has little/no picture problems when viewed of axis (not directly in front of screen).
= Better for dark-lit rooms, but worse for bright-lit rooms = Plasma's can have screen glare and less contrast and less brightness and faded colors in bright-lit rooms, but they have little/none of these problems in dark-lit rooms. Better and/or expensive Plasma's may use less reflective glass.
= Better response times = Plasma's florescent phosphor coating in each subpixel stops glowing just a few nanoseconds after the electrode turns off (on and off) which means less lag and less ghosting.ect
= Better refresh rates = Plasma's better response times bundled with it's sub-feild drives or focused-feild drives take each of a it's pixel's sub-pixels and flashes it a number of times to create a image, the way Plasma works has little motion blur with sub-feild drives or little/no motion blur (and better brightness control, color quality, contrast.ect) with focused-feild drives. (Plasma can use interpolation for judder too).
= Worse screen size options, and worse weight (thicker), and worse manufacturer choices = Plasma is a emissive display which makes it hard to make a Plasma screen size smaller than 40 inches for HD-TV and you may not find them larger than 70 inches for HD-TV because the power consumption will sky rocket. Plasma's tend to about 10-20 pounds heavier too and are thicker but that can provide better audio quality tho. Main brand Plasma maker is Panasonic or Samsung or LG.
= Worse power consumption, and worse life span, but better burn in, but worse high altitudes = A plasma can cost on average around $50 a year more. A Plasma can easily last 10 years and much more. Newer Plasma's have burn in technologies that make really hard or not possible to have permanent burn in, but there sill a chance you could get temporary burn in (even tho it's harder to do now). Plasma may not work in really high altitudes and if it does the TV would create a buzzing sound.
= Price = Plasma is more expensive to buy than LCD CCFL, but Plasma is less expensive to buy than LCD LED. Plasma does not cost that much to make.

- An LCD HD-TV is sometimes referred to as a transmissive display, the panel has sections of lighting for a section of pixels. Light isn't created by the liquid crystals themselves; instead, a light source behind the LCD panel shines through the display (CCFL LCD or LED LCD). A diffusion panel behind the LCD redirects and scatters the light evenly to ensure a uniform image. The display consists of two polarizing transparent panels and a liquid crystal solution sandwiched in between. The screen's front layer of glass is etched on the inside surface in a grid pattern to form a template for the layer of liquid crystals. Liquid crystals are rod-shaped molecules that twist when an electric current is applied to them. Each crystal acts like a shutter, either allowing light to pass through or blocking the light. The pattern of transparent and dark crystals forms the image.
= Worse contrast = LCD's have worse black levels, but better white levels. LCD's are a transmissive display which means it is edge-lit or full-array-lit and it also uses local dimming (aka backlight-flashing/scanning) which turns off sections of CCFL or LED which means you can get brightness uniformity problems (brightness leaks into areas and you can see the brightness changing to make up LCD's bad contrast and slow brightness changes.ect) which means less brightness accuracy and less color accuracy .ect (Better and/or expensive LCD use LED lights and more emissive local dimming display and more advance technologies to get a picture as good or better than a Plasma).
= Worse viewing angles = LCD uses a CCFL backlight or a LED backlight (transmissive display), and the LCD pixels act like shutters (and the red, green, blue filters), opening and closing to let light through or block it, this shutter effect causes increasing variations in picture brightness as viewers move further off axis (not directly in front of screen) which means you may notice that the picture looks less bright and vivid and you might see slight changes in color too (IPS > TN).
= Worse for dark-lit rooms, but better for bright-lit rooms = LCD's have the most light coming off from their screen which may strain your eyes in a dark-lit rooms, but they have little/no screen glare and little/no picture problems in bright-lit rooms.
= Worse response times = LCD'S liquid crystals take longer to change from on or off (switch around) which means more lag and more ghosting.ect
= Worse refresh rates = LCD's have more worse response times bundled with it's refresh rates which use backlight-flashing/scanning or fake interpolation frames (for judder too) or just repeat the same real frames which help reduce motion blur, but does not eliminate motion blur.
= Better screen size options, and better weight (thinner), and better manufacturer choices = LCD is a transmissive display which makes it easier to make a LCD screen size very small like around 20 inches and you may find them larger than 70 inches because they use less power consumption. LCD's tend to be about 10-20 pounds lighter too and are thinner (edge-lit displays are even thinner) but that can provide worse audio quality tho. Many brands of manufacturer to choice from.
= Better power consumption, and better life span, and little/no burn in, and little/no altitude problems = A LCD or a LED can cost on average around $50 a year less. A LCD or a LED can easily last 10 years and much more.
= Price = LCD LED is more expensive to buy than Plasma, and LCD LED is even more expensive to buy than CCFL LCD. LED and all the advance technologies going into them make cost more to make, but that's why there is budget LCD versions instead.

Can I receive digital signals on my TV directly without a digital receiver box?

dvd_digita

We recently received a digital converter box from our cable provider. They said that they were finally switching to digital signals as part of the requirement of our country's telecommunications commission. Now our TV is is an LED TV which was bought recently. According to it settings, it can also receive digital signals. Now my question is can I bypass the usage of the digital receiver box and just receive the digital signals directly on my TV? Our cable company uses coaxial cables which initially were plugged directly onto our TVs but since they gave us the digital receiver boxes, are now plugged onto those boxes and connected to our TV through RCA cables. Now I tried doing a digital autotune on our TV with our provider's cable directly plugged onto it but it did nothing.

Answer
They are half lying. Yes they are transitioning to digital only (in simple terms, they are shutting down analog programming, it is already all digital). The lie half is they are not being "forced" by regulators like boradcasters were, but are doing it essentially voluntarily on their own terms.

With that, how they are going digital may not be compatible with your TV, and definitely will not provide the same user experience and channels (at least using traditional cable numbers) as if they kept analog, or you used their supplied box.

Since a channel scan gets you nothing, it would be safe to say no.

720 vs 1080:

Whats the difference between Plasma and LCD?

Bobby

Thinking of getting a new TV and I've noticed that Plasmas are way cheaper the LCD's... Does anyone know why??

Answer
Cost issue - yah, because LCDs have to put in expensive add-ons to match Plasma quality. But they pass along that cost to you the consumer.

All LCDs, CCFL or LED, suffer from motion blur problems. They can't refresh the screen fast enough to keep up with fast action scenarios. So you get ghost trails. Now, the manufacturers found a way to try and eliminate this problem. Its the advanced Refresh Rate spec you see on LCDs. So the base is 60Hz, but you can pay for advanced options like 120Hz or 240Hz. This feature can help a lot, especially as you go into larger sized TVs, but you're expected to pay a premium for it.

Now Plasma on the other hand has a near instantaneous response time of like 0.001 ms. This means it has a near flawless motion playback (like a CRT or DLP). This is inherent to the technology, so there is nothing extra to pay for in order to get crisp and clean motion playback.

Next, CCFL based LCDs are sometimes claimed to provide grey blacks, muted colors, and so-so contrast as you get into larger sized sets (a bit as you break 40", but more so as you break 50"). So in order to combat this, LCD manufacturers came out with the LED light source. LED does typically solve these problems for an LCD set. But, besides 3D, this is the most premium feature for an LCD so carries the greatest cost add-on for you the consumer.

Plasma on the other hand will deliver vivid colors, deep contrast, and true blacks right out of the box. It is something that is again inherent to the technology. So there is no advanced feature cost to have to pass onto the consumer.

So that's how Plasma prices can beat LCD prices and still deliver top notch image quality experience. And stick with Panasonic for the best image quality and set reliability.

The main knock on Plasma now is that it is still a glass unit. So if you have loads of uncontrollable light, glare might be an issue. But if you can control the lighting in the room, it shouldn't be that big of a deal. And LCD's aren't magically perfect with glare, they're just better.

Most other knocks against Plasma are myths and misconceptions. They do not need to be re-charged. Their are now energy star certified models, so they are no longer power hogs. You can get thin models if you need something of lesser weight. Modern ones do not suffer burn-in. Especially if you go with Panasonic, which includes extra anti-image retention features above and beyond the advances in the technology.

Yesterday night I went out and bought a Samsung Smart LED TV 55', set it up, blah blah blah and went to bed. Today I tried to hook up my Xbox and it just won't work. Everything is plugged in correctly...(I think...) and everything is tight enough and what not but it just won't work! Yes, my Xbox is on. Maybe I'm on the wrong channel or something I dunno but it's just not coming up on the screen. Help? Please?

Answer
Best thing to do, is to use HDMI.

You don't need to spend much ($10 - $25), but HDMI is the way to go.

Then set your input to HDMI.

If your not sure how to do that, there is often a "master" input button that will cycle through all the inputs on the TV.

Can you safely connect a TV, xbox, and mini fridge into one surge protector?

Daniel G

I have a 37" LED TV, an xbox 360, and a small mini-fridge and the way my room is situated there is only one plug I can use that isn't connected to the light switch, is it safe to plug all three into a surge protector?

Answer
depends on what wattage the sum of all devices adds up to compared to the maximum wattage rating of the surge protector. Id say youd be fine. All that will happen is overload the power board and it will cut out. There sould be an overload reset button. The surge protection will not me affected as its purpose is to protect devices from external power surges like lightening strikes to power lines or power supply authorities transformers malfunctioning...things like that.
I reckon youd be fine to run those things all together though. Just try and keep it at that and not add much more.

Edit:
Lighting and power ultimately all come from the same power source anyway. It makes zero difference unless you powering banks of florescent lighting which then, would be on a dedicated circuit. There is nothing that physically seperates the active terminal in your power point from the active terminal in your light fitting when all circuits are active (unless you have a three phase supply then all circuits will be distributed evenly over the three phases even then you still may have a power and lighting circuits on the same phase). There is technically and physically nothing wrong with what you're trying to to.
