What are the pros and cons of LED and LCD tv's?

Miss.P

Answer
First the difference is how the TV's are backlit. Both are LCD screens, but "LCD" is backlit by a CFL lighting...fluorescent lighting where LED-LCD's are backlit by LEDs either the entire panel or edgelit for the thin panel sets.

LEDs provide more vivid colors and deeper blacks normally associated with plasmas. They, the backlights, will last much longer too, operate cooler, and use less energy.

Again, if you want a very thin TV, then the edgelit LED is the way to go. I have a Sony 55" edgelit LED that we have mounted on the wall and love the picture...1080p through blu-ray and 1080i through FiOS.

If you're not in a great hurry and want to save a bundle, sign up for tigerdirect.com's email list. They run sales all the time and have some really great deals. My TV normally lists for $2069, but I got it just before the Super Bowl for $1249 which included free shipping and no sales tax.

What are the pros and cons of LED vs. Plasma TV?

Think abou

Per feedback I'm reading, the plasma TV I almost bought had rave reviews, but then I read they only last about 6 years until the nitrogen that runs them runs out and you can't repair them. But maybe by then it's time to switch anyway? Is that the only difference between the two?

Answer
Plasma: gas-filled cells are ionized, producing light of varying colors to form the picture. Modern plasma sets produce brilliant pictures, as good as anything else. They're best for fast action sports and game consoles. Takes more electrical power, and physically heavier than equivalent LCD/LED sets. Generally lower cost.

LCD: Liquid crystal display, like a digital watch. Voltage is applied to each pixel in a manner that causes it to change color. The older, conventional sets commonly referred to as "LCD" are illuminated from behind by a fluorescent lamp. LCD sets are best in rooms with a lot of ambient light (plasmas have a screen glare problem). Less-expensive models have a fast-motion blur problem, seen with sports and game consoles. (No blurring with plasma.)

LED (or "LED-LCD"): Exactly the same as LCD, except that the backlight is a bank of light emitting diodes. There are two types, edge-lit and full matrix. Edge-lit LED sets can be very thin, but otherwise perform pretty much like a very good conventional LCD. Matrix-lit sets can control the contrast in specific areas of the screen, giving better overall picture quality. These sets draw the least electric power and, in theory, have the least risk for maintenance problems, but they are the most expensive of the three types.

There are also OLED sets, but they are mainly experimental at present; very small screens, prohibitively costly, and they don't last long. When that technology is fully developed, the LEDs themselves will comprise the picture.

Screen burn on a Samsung PN50C450B1D 50" 720p Plasma TV...help!?

Brian

I just bought this TV about 2 days ago now, primarily for gaming, the guy at ABC warehouse knew that and reccomended this one, it was a steal along with him throwing in some free monster HDMI cables, but last night I played MW2 for about an hour on it, and when I shut the PS3 off, and the screen was black, I could see all the stuff like etched into the screen like the radar, and the weapon info, so I was horribly pissed (I only played for about an hour!), so I shut it off, and and turned it back on like a half hour later to watch some TV before bed, and it was still there.

Now this morning I turn the TV on and its gone....should I take the TV back and goto an LCD or LED? I really love this tv and want to keep it but im just curious as to why there was a "temporary" screen burn, is that just due to it being a plasma, and something I shouldnt worry about?

Answer
I wouldn't worry about it. probably just flouresence left over from the excited gas.

If you do go LCD, make sure the LED can turn diodes off for black in order to get better contrast.

What is the best laptop under $800?

da fishama

Hello I am looking for a laptop that will be used for schoolwork playing online games surfing the web and shopping. I need a screen of 12-14.1 I do not care what brand must be under 800 bux It must have windows 7 on it or be able to be added for like 30 bux wen the laptop is configurable also it must be fast (not super fast like super super but fast) cuz nothing makes me madder than a slow computer thank you!

Answer
It's a good thing that you asked this question so that I may be able to provide an insight to the other readers out there who are also planning to buy a brand new computer.
Well, If you're a little into gaming like myself, if you're at the store and looking at the laptop available, the first thing you should look for from the computer surface itself is a sticker for NVidia or ATI Mobility Radeon just below the keyboard. This assures you that the laptop has a dedicated graphics memory card. For instance, the game I would love most to play, Diablo III, is said to run on 3D graphics so it is rumored to need at least 1GB of graphics memory which I chose for my laptop that has a 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 230M (although I would have preferred an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 with 1GB DDR3 discrete graphics memory instead or much better a 1GB Nvidia GeForce GTS or GTX 260M).
Next important aspect is the RAM (memory of the computer). If you're in designing and you need to ran applications like the AutoCAD 2007 or newly released softwares used for editing photos and videos, well you have to make sure that the laptop has at least 2GB of pre-installed DDR2 memory chips in it. My computer has 4GB DDR3 SDRAM SO-DIMM (2 DIMM) installed in it making it run a lot faster, and the max I could install on it is 8GB (2pcs 4GB each).
But what makes a computer really run fast? It is it's processor! So if you really want your processor to have computing prowess, make sure it is an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (Intel Centrino 2 is also a Core 2 Duo but features power saving capabilities; Quad core is for gaming fanatics). Now my computer only has a Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB) which is just the right stuff for the applications that I would like to run on it. Piece of advice is, look at the Properties option of the laptop inside the Computer and make sure that you have at least 2GHz of speed on your processor and also to briefly describe a Core 2 Duo, is like having 2 motors running your machine each independent of the other.
For the HDD (hard drive) at least have 320GB on your laptop and make sure to partition it into 4 partitions. You can use one to store in all your photos and files, the other, all your MP3 songs, the other all your videos and the last and smallest partition, for creating restore points and file back-ups.
One more thing, the average laptop LCD screen size is 15.4". If you want something smaller than that with these 3 features I just shed some light on, expect the price to go higher (ex. for LCD screens 14" and 13.3" diagonally).
If you want a portable and affordable laptop, well about two weeks back, a new model of Sony CW13FX/B Jet Black glossy notebook went on sale at Fry's, and I'll give you an idea of what it's made up of. It has a 14" (1366x768) LED backlit display screen using energy-efficient technology; comes with Intel® Core⢠2 Duo Processor T6600 (2.20GHz; only second to Quads and the newest Core i-5 & i-7 out just this November); 4GB PC3-8500 (the fastest and newest type of memory sticks that came out in the market last October; w/c is also expandable up to a Maximum: 8GB); NVIDIA® GeForce® G210M graphics card and 256MB of dedicated video RAM (for applications like Adobe Photoshop, U-Lead, AutoCAD, games, et al.); integrated MOTION EYE® camera and microphone with face-tracking technology; Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth® Technology (to connect to your phone and other bluetooth enabled devices): Integrated Stereo A2DP (2.1 + EDR); an HDMI⢠output (delivers video and audio to external sources via a single cable so you can enjoy HD entertainment on your compatible big screen TV without a myriad of extra cables); and best of all, it already comes with Windows® 7 Home Premium and was on sale for only $699.99. Now I think it is the best deal you can get for a brand new 14 inch laptop with a dedicated video card, and a SONY at that. So, back then I also checked out the price they had in other stores, and Fry's was cheaper by about $130 {you can go on-line at Fry's Electronics website (www.Fry's.com) then type in this # 6029078 (or 6029138 for white & 6029108 for pink) in the search box under Notebooks/Tablets before you click on GO}. Now, after the sale, the price went up by $100, so we are actually waiting for it to go on sale again after Thanksgiving.
If you want a MacBook, that is on a totally different aspect for Macs have their own OS (Operating System) unlike the common Windows OS (XP, Vista and the newest Windows 7) that most computers come with.
Some places to start looking for the best prices, my advice, go to the website of Fry's, CostCo, MicroCenter and BestBuy for updates and comparison. Some places to start looking for the best prices. The 15.6" HP laptop I customized and configured came to a total amount of $1,455.80 (tax and other charges included).

What TV should I get?

BigMikeyB

Presently, I have a 37 inch 720p 60hz tv and I thought that it is about time that I upgrade. I sit about 5 to 8 feet from it. I watch blu rays and play video games on this tv. What TV should do you think I should get? LCD, LED, Plasma, 3D, what type of specs do you think would be good for me? Should I save up about 1000 or up and go all out or do you think I can still get a great tv for about 650-800? Thanks.

Answer
size , between 40-50 inch
HD - - definitely a 1080p or depending on your region, a 1080i
brand -- Vizio , I have bought 4 of them for 2 houses and they are top notch and the Cadillac of tvs.
type - - get one that is a combination of LED and LCD for your best color/contrast quality.
gadgets----- get a Wi-Fi built into it , you can do so much with it like searching and watching YOUTUBE or checking the weather or playing Netflix , or getting into facebook , etc.
juice ---- instead of the cheap 60hz refresh rate , eliminate the blurs and shadows by going to either a 120hz or a 240 hz refresh rate .
price range ----- you can get a real decent , power packed tv for under 700 . Example , right now walmart has a 42" Vizio , 120hz , 1080p , Wi-Fi , on sale for 478.
Or pick a brand you prefer but for me , Vizio is a top notch TV and it doesn't break your wallet.

best under $ 1000 tv over 55 inch?

askari

need new good big screen tv for under 1000 has to be 55 inch or bigger

Answer
This one is a must have, it is ranked as the best HDTV (that's not 3d) of 2010 and
blows away any LED. It is a 100 dollars more and 50 inch, but it's a must have model.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasonic+-+VIERA+/+50%22+Class+/+1080p+/+600Hz+/+Plasma+HDTV/9788953.p?id=1218175321979&skuId=9788953

There is a 58 inch panasonic plasma S2 but it's 1400 bucks and the picture
is nothing compared to the 50 inch model I posted on top. Even though it's
smaller by 5 inches, 50 inch is huge and you have the best HD set of 2010 for
1100.

Why are Mitsubishi & LG LCD-LED TV's missing from every discussion?

AC 3

In most expert reviews these are rated highly but there are very few references or reviews anywhere from regular folks or technicians (working folks) so I am wondering what it is I don't know. Have owned a 46" Mitsubishi for 12 years and is on virtually 24/7. The other is a 32" LG lcd and it has been great. Anyone have a thought?

Answer
Part of the reason seems to be that Mitsubishi's quality is good, but it's not quite up to the competition. In the latest Consumer Reports ratings, Mitsubishis rank as #14 and #15, out of 16, among 52 - 55 inch LCD sets. They are #12 of 12 at 46 inches. They don't show up at all in other categories.

Again, that doesn't mean the Mitsus, like yours, are not fine sets. But there is so much else out there, with amazing features and often better prices that the Mitsus simply cannot rise to the top of the list, or anywhere near it.

Best TV brands for 2013? and How reliable VIZION is?

Cihan Y

Hi there,

I will buy a 32" LED TV this weekend. My budget is $300 so I have limited selections. I have heard amazing things about Samsung and Sony. However, many people mentioned VIZIO. It seems like they are pretty good but how reliable they are? I usually have limited money and I plan a long term investment what I mean I plan to use it for at least 2 years. It is the reason I ignore Coby, Emerson, RCA, Sanyo, Proscan and Westinghouse. I found a really good deal on VIZIO but will it be a dissoppointment? or should I stick with Samsung

Note: Sony is out of my range!

Answer
Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. If you read yahoo questions all the time, you will notice 95% of tv problems comes from LCD or LED tv and 95% of those are those bargain price tv. Vizio is considered a bargain price tv that is sold by bargain price department store. There is not much difference between LCD and LED tv. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs. along with the pro and con of each technology. About 3 years ago I was in the market for a 32". I read all the reviews of consumers who purchased one along with viewing the tv at the store. I purchased a Panasonic. Panasonic is the most reliable tv in the market followed by Samsung. Both also have very good customer service support when you have any questions or issue. You can purchase a Panasonic32" LCD for about the same price you are going to pay for the Vizio. Hope this will help you out.

Is there that big of a difference in LCD and LED tvs?

Junior G

I found these two great tvs.
One LED http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Philips+-+40%22+Class+/+1080p+/+120Hz+/+LED-LCD+HDTV/1419214.p?id=1218256957773&skuId=1419214

The other LCD http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Philips+-+40%22+Class+/+1080p+/+120Hz+/+LED-LCD+HDTV/1419214.p?id=1218256957773&skuId=1419214

They are the same size and refresh rate but the LCD is $100 cheaper.

I also found another LCD that is 2'' bigger and is cheaper but it's an LG

THEN there's this baby that would be perfect but the brand is what keeps me away. Is it a good buy?
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Vizio-M420NV/13904836

Answer
True LED TVs are very expensive at the moment ($5000+).

In this context, you are looking at an LCD TV with an LED back light as opposed to the traditional Cold Cathode Fluorescent (CCF) back lights.

So, both are LCD TV, the only difference is the light source in back of the LCD. The LEDs tend to give a purer white light. Some people can see the difference. Personally, in a stand alone situation, I am hard pressed to tell the difference. So, if you are not going to have two of them side by side in your living room . . .

Difference between LED LCD TVS AND LED TVS?

superpug92

I went to walmart.com and saw that under the tv category their as a LED-LCD SECTION WITH 40 tvs and a LED section with 146 tvs. I want to know whats the difference isnt a LED LCD tv just a led with out adding the LCD or are they two different categories that can be added to the whole plasma, LCD, LED, CRT TV equation.

Answer
I looked over walmart.com in the TV section and couldn't find the categories laid out as you've described. But in any case, with the exception of certain types of purely LED sets that are still in development, there are no "LED" sets that are not, in fact, just LCD sets with LED backlighting. Anything you buy at Walmart, so far, is going to be an LCD-LED, meaning an LCD display with the LED backlight.

Some day we'll be seeing OLED sets--a pure LED display--but that's well down the road, as the technology needs a lot of refinement before it will be commercially acceptable.

What brand oF LED tv is the best for the money?

Travis

Answer
All the brands mentioned above are good brands indeed. I personally think LG has the best value all around. They don't give too many problems and their quality for price is really good. I myself don't have an LG (I'm a SONY & Panasonic owner) but it is very evident when you see their sets and what they offer. Their Plasmas are perhaps their best value a little cheaper than SAMSUNG and about the sape picture quality.

Should I get LCD or Plasma TV?

Tony M

Hi I recently had my 50 inch Samsung plasma TV burnt and the repair for that is 700 dollars. So I am think I would rather just go ahead and buy a new one. But the question comes to mind is weather or not I would like LCD or Plasma. I had Plasma and it was fine. It was an amazing gaming experience for my Playstation 3 since I was playing some games in 1080p. Also better off axis viewing. But it seems to me that Plasma do not last very long since mine didn't go for 3 years, and My tv was on most of the time. Especially during the World Cup 2010.

Should I switch to LCD or just buy another Plasma? I don't play games much on my Plasma TV only like once a week or even twice a week, very often I play it, I usually play on my smaller TV. Anyways, I don't have much clue on LCD. Is it good for gaming with ps3 for 1080p and the same gaming experience as my Plasma? What would you recommend? Is plasma now a days good? And long lasting?

Answer
I would recommend a Lcd tv over plasma. LCD tvs have worked great for me and I stick with it for another 2-3 yrs, until the LED tvs price is affordable. There are lot of LED tv being marketed and they are not true LEDs. If you need one now you will pay an arm and a leg. There are others like OLED Tvs which are good but one do not get better than Lcd. So I stick with LCD.

Btw, plasma are also good but lcds are more reliable as far as I know.

Related to gaming and bluray, I have both hooked via hdmi and av receiver. I have Bluray player, xbox 360, wii along with 52 LCD samsung tv. Gaming is awesome so is bluray which plays in 1080p.

Best LED TV for the right price and specs!?

Nate P

I want to purchase an LED tv but I'm trying to find one that matches the right specs and price that I'm looking for. I have probably around 700 solid dollars to spend on a tv. I'd like to have more than 32 inches, 1080p, 120hz, HDMI connection and wifi would be nice, if not, it's not a big deal. I'm trying to find a television with also GREAT quality, noticeable that makes it worth the cash. Please help me out. Thanks. :)

which is better LED or PLASMA tv?

Download M

**compare base on performance and lifespan and durability of the tv.

I already have a LCD tv and want to upgrade. Lately there is more and more LED tv are being released.

Answer
LED TV isn't always an upgrade over LCD because LED TVs are really just LCD TVs with LED backlights.

The razor thin sets actually give up picture quality to get that super thin profile. These edge lit TVs have issues with uniformity and light leakage. You won't notice it in the store, but you'll see it at night when you are at home and the lights are out.

If you go with an LED/LCD TV, you need to buy a TV that uses LEDs in a local dimming configuration not edge lit. Most LED TVs are edge lit, not local dimming. To make matters worse, some TV makers use their own lingo. Vizio for example calls their local dimming sets, TruLED.

I'd take a good plasma set over an edge lit LCD/LED TV any day. The very best local dimming LED/LCD sets and the very best plasma sets are a close call.

Budget $500
Brand- Sony, samsung, lg

Answer
Ramy, Good answer (Except that sony is an LCD not LED )which the Op wants. The sony $ series is bottom of the sony line, not that thats bad but its LCD not a smart Tv which 99% of 2012 Tvs are all samsungs are Smart Tvs for 2012.Its ok to disagree Ramy but you have to know what your talking about before showing the guy a link for the cheapest Sony LCD made, with less features than other 2012 LEDs like movie support through USB,sony has only pics and songs no video.A big complaint on here when people try to hook up a hard drive to play movies and it doesn't recognize movie files. The future of tvs is connections like Cloud thats the big buzz word all pcs, Apples,& most new 2012 Tvs have some form of smart capabilities. And as usual Joe G is right again, yes there are TVs for 500 & under but youll have to sacrifice features or size to stay under 500 bucks.I paid 979.00 for a new 2012 Full 1080P 3D smart Tv Awesome features and picture quality its an amazing Tv a PN51E550 & a Panasonic 50 inch st50 both top rated tvs on top 10 tvs c-net reviews amazon.etc.The OP wants an LED and the only LEDs for under 500 are off brands Vizio, westinghouse, Emerson, etc or are samsung panasonic sony but the LEDs for those manufacturers are 32inch models. So one or the other.I would rather save a bit and get at least a mid range then get a bottom end set that will be lacking before you even turn it on.

Dynex 60" LED TV good or bad?

Hey!

On Best Buy it is on sale for $700 and I want to buy it for my man-cave. Is it a good TV or a bad one?

Answer
Hello!
It is a good TV. Not the best with less features but if you want a big screen LED for a low price why not refuse to get a Dynex. Quality is decent, not the best, but for budget everything will work well.

Also they do have slow response time which is bad for sports and movies with high motion graphics. Some features might not work.

now i have searched alot for this, but need a definite answer.
1. which brand should i go for?
2. the daily average usage of the tv would be around 5-6 hrs a day.
3. i don't game at all, bt i might start gaming after i buy the tv.
4. i am going to watch a lot of HD movies on my tv.
5. i would like somethng tht does not eat too much power, has a good viewing life and has the best picture n sound.
pls suggest accordingly.

Answer
Plasma all the way-Only thing Plasma Starts at 42" and goes up
better and deeper blacks
wider off angle viewing
awesome for fast motion-600Hz refresh rate while the top LCDs/LEDs are only 240Hz-Best for gaming and sports watching
No burn in-on new plasmas-was a problem 5 years ago
they do use more power than the LCDs-But really if you cant afford the possible 3-5 bucks a month in and increase in your power bill-You do not need to be buying a big tv to begin with.
The short life people are talking about equals about 10-15 years of watching. really who wont buy a new tv in 10 freaking years???

Right now the top Plasmas are made by Panasonic(according to Cnet, consumer reports and a few home video mags). Right now 50" 1080p ( i own this one and the 65" version) at best buy USA around 899 for the 50" 720p is 599

LED tvs are just a LCD with a LED back light instead of Florissant tubes!!!!!!!!!!
LED tvs ARE JUST LCD with different backlighting they still suffer all the drawbacks of LCD but are just brighter

The Samsung pn4500 plasma display is getting very high tech and consumer reviews. Bestbuy $398 on sale. This is not a smart tv. We game heavily between my two sons and I and they both have this display. Great picture and perfomance. They love it. They both switched over from lg. Go to cnet, avforum and home thearter magazine for more info.

Whats the best tv for under 2500$. I need a HD tv thats good for movies and my PS3.?

Giovanni

Looking for a 1080p 240hz tv that is not too expsenive but is good any ideas
52in or 55 if possible and under 2.5 grand. 1080p 240hz that type of things

Answer
With that budget you can pretty much have your pick of the crop. That's a sizable budget. You can easily get a top tier HDTV for maximizing your PS3 experience.

I would recommend also considering Plasma displays. With that budget you could also easily pursue a Plasma. You would get stronger motion playback over an LCD, even LED LCD. I think at the very least you need to put that into your consideration.

Lastly, make sure you go to a store and look in person. Use advice here or from other online sources in order to narrow down your decision. But make sure you bring your eyes into the equation. Tech specs only mean so much. You have to watch the TV, not the tech specs, so you need to make sure its delivering an image your are happy with. I know people have gone with "weaker" tech specs and come out more satisfied because they ended up with a brand that used an image processor which made better images for their tastes.

Models I'd recommend,

Panasonic TC-P54G10 1080p Plasma - $1,700 Amazon
Panasonic TC-P54V10 1080p Plasma - $2,400 Amazon ($2159 ABC Warehouse)
- quite possibly the single best 54" TVs on the market, the V series adds some additional contrast, but the G10 is still a flagship quality TV

PANASONIC TCP58V10 58" 1080p Plasma - $2459 ABC Warehouse
- basically the single best 58" TV you can own

Sony KDL-52XBR9 52" 1080p 240Hz LCD - $2,200 Amazon / ABC Warehouse
Samsung UN46B8000 46" 1080p 240Hz LCD - $2,200 Amazon
- these are amongst the top of the line in LCD offerings out there within your budget

In general, with your budget, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, those are your go to options. LG and Sharp might be worth some consideration as well. But I think I'd still stick it out with the first three. And frankly, I'd definitely go Plasma at the sizes you're looking at.

Panasonic Viera plasmas don't suffer from burn-in. They are way beyond that. If you get one and are concerned about that (the typical fear of Plasma), then just follow the common conditioning procedures. No gaming on it for the first 50 hours. Keep the brightness and contrast (picture) settings cranked down for the first 100-200 hours and then optimize. After that you have the best of the best in HDTV experience.

Good gaming monitor/tv that is cheap? Hoping $200 or less.?

Rio

I'm definitely on a low budget but today is the best time of the year to get some tech stuff and I was hoping to get a second monitor for my computer. I want a monitor/tv has a decent monitor specs, 20-26" preferrably, specs: 1920x1080 1080p, 5 ms or lower(10 ms tops), with the option of it as a tv or plug in my PS3/360 so an HDMI port(or 2) would be great.

I tried searching for some already and I found some monitors under 200, Dell U2311H or the Dell U2312HM but I found out they don't have an HDMI output. If you guys could possibly find a monitor with a HDMI port, with 5 ms or even lower, and around the same price below $200 if possible, then I would be forever grateful.

Answer
now, for no LED would be this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236059

with LED (less power consumption/more efficient) (on sale)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236175

The no LED version does consume more power and is more expensive, but has a better brightness (250 cd/m2 vs 300 cd/m2)
I personally went with the LCD version as electricity is very cheap where i am from and it used to be cheaper (and it will go back to being cheaper after the sale)

so my suggestion would be to go with the LED if you're going to buy before the sale ends. otherwise, go with the LCD.

gracelyn52

Im planning on buying a new tv for my hubby, he loves watching movies and on occasion he plays his ps3. I was thinking of buying this tv http://www.walmart.com/ip/LG-47LE5400/13904856 it has really good reviews, 4 million to 1 contrast ratio and a 120hz refresh rate. Its also an led, original prise is 1,700 dollars but its on sale for 1,100. it almost sounds to good to be true, would this tv be good to go along with his ps3?

Answer
LED TV's are the best for any environment/room you put it in and basically LG is a god sent, I have a gaming PC monitor by LG and i freaking love it, its just awesome, and the price sounds pretty decent too and those are some really nice features for a TV, so yes, Id recommend it.

Whose 'retirement' do u consider to be more memorable & affecting: Ric Flair (2008) or Shawn Michaels (2010)?

The Clown

By affecting, of course I mean affecting to the business.

Answer
Ric Flair's retirement was made as a bigger deal because he was obviously considered the greatest ever by many, and it even led to the Undertaker/ McMahon breaking character to come and hug him in the ring after the Raw TV taping was over and after all the other superstars had paid their respect.

Shawn Michaels' retirement also had Undertaker breaking character to an extent after their Mania match and the next night on Raw, however it didn't have all the superstars come out to pay their respect as they did to Flair (only HHH came out in Michaels' case). However, Shawn retired after the better match, definitely.

But Ric Flair's retirement, for all that grandness, was just a joke. He returned back to the ring to fight Hulk Hogan in the Hulkamania tour in Australia and is now on TNA. So basically, it was not a retirement after all, and that is really an insult to the great send-off that he received from his peers, juniors and fans in 2008.

Due to that reason, I would rate Shawn Michaels' retirement higher than Ric Flair's. Flair's was memorable due to the send-off but it wasn't that "affecting" as it was not a real retirement from the ring since he is back in the ring now. So, Shawn's retirement was more "affecting" because he did not come back to the business, but Flair did, in a way that I and many veteran fans will not appreciate.

who is kerry m. armstrong? what are her credentials?

Answer
Kerry Armstrong (b. 3 January 1958, Sydney) is a well-known Australian actress who is best known for her incredible flexibility within roles. She is only one of two actors to date to win two awards in one year at that Australian Film Institute Awards.

Armstrong has had various stints on television in the 1970s including a role in the first 44 episodes of Prisoner.

As was common among Australian actors of the time, Armstrong emigrated to the United States in 1981 to study at the Herbert Berghof acting school in New York City. Whilst there, she starred in Tom Stoppard's "Dalliance", had an on-going role in daytime serial One Life to Live, and became part of the 'Actor's Gang' along with John Cusack and her boyfriend at the time, Tim Robbins. After working in the groups' plays - which she has stated were her favorite part of her time in America - Armstrong starred on Dynasty as Duchess Helena. She began receiving job offers - including a part on Saturday Night Live, and a three-picture deal, which she turned down.

In 1987, Armstrong's grandmother died and she returned to Australia, where she assumed that she would continue her rising career path. However, instead, she found less work in her native country than abroad. Around this time she met her third husband, Mac Gudgeon, with whom she had a son. They divorced a few years later.

In the early 1990s, Armstrong began acting in television series in Australia, including Ocean Girl, All Together Now and Halfway Across the Galaxy and Turn Left. However, after meeting builder Mark Croft and having twin boys with him, the lack of work - a problem that had been growing relatively common in the Australian industry - almost led her to quit acting.

This likely would have happened, had she not been offered a role in the cast of SeaChange in 1998, as Heather Jelly, the ever-devoted but long-suffering wife of corrupt local mayor Bob (John Howard). The role won her critical acclaim, mainstream attention and several awards.

When the series ended in 2000, Armstrong continued on with her theatre work and also led the cast of Lantana, the award winning Ray Lawrence film also starring Anthony LaPaglia, Barbara Hershey, Geoffrey Rush, Glenn Robbins and Vince Colosimo.

Not only did Armstrong win both the IF Award and the Australian Film Institute Award for this performance, but â the same year â she won another AFI, for final season of SeaChange, making her the second actress to win two AFI awards in one year (the first was Sacha Horler for Soft Fruit and Praise.

In 2002 she joined the cast of medico-legal drama MDA on ABC alongside Jason Donovan and Shane Bourne. However, the low wages of the Australian television industry meant that working on one television show was not viable enough and so Armstrong left the series at the end of its second season. In the series her character, Dr. Ella Davis, left the firm that was the focus of the show.

Armstrong's most recent role was a small part in the low-budget film The Oyster Farmer.

Awards:
1991 - Nominated - Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award - Best Actress - Hunting
2000 - Nominated - Logie Award - Outstanding Actress in TV Series - SeaChange
2001 - Winner - Logie Award - Outstanding Actress in TV Series - SeaChange
2001 - Winner - If Award - Best Actress - Lantana (shared with co-stars Barbara Hershey, Leah Purcell, Rachel Blake and Daniella Farinacci
2001 - Winner - AFI Award - Best Actress - Lantana
2001 - Winner - AFI Award - Best Actress (Television) - SeaChange
2002 - Winner - Film Critics Circle of Australia Award - Best Actress - Lantana
2002 - Nominated - AFI Award - Best Actress (Television) - MDA
