How to feed internet to TV using computer?

Fernie

I have a LED Samsung TV and I'm trying to use the apps and internet on it but I do not have the USB adapter to make it wireless connection. Since my router is located in another room, I can not hard wire it either. Is there possibly a way to use my macbook or windows based computer to feed internet to my TV, maybe by connecting it USB to USB or using an ethernet cable to connect them?

Answer
Forget wireless, bridging and the laptop. Ethernet over powerline is what you need.

EOP:
http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-XAVB5001-Powerline-500-Adapter/dp/B004DVEW8I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1316799561&sr=8-3

This way you get great speeds and don't have to run a wire + the single never drops.

Connect one to an outlet by the router and one by the tv. The power lines in your home become the wire.

@Sparky

To suggest having the laptop on 24/7 and the use of bridging is a very unorthodox and cumbersome solution that is very likely to cause problems.

It is only $20-25 more and requires no configuration (no passwords , no ssid) , will never drop, wired speeds , is not substitutable to noise or walls, provides 24/7 connectivity without the use of a laptop. I would say all of this is worth the $20.

Answer
I suspect this is your TV, instead of the incorrect model number you gave us.

http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/UN32D4003BDXZA-features

If that is the case, your TV has no internet connectivity.

As far as updating the firmware, go to the website, such as the following:

Any recommendations on a laptop and TV combination?

Dads House

I need to upgrade my laptop to something that can handle processing videos better. On the side, also has a decent stereo sound without the need for external speakers. I live in a nursing home, so the total table space to work on is 18" X 32", so no room even for a mouse. I also want to get an LED TV to which I can wirelessly link to the laptop for using it also as a computer screen. It should be in the range of 36". I cannot run an HDML cable as the TV mounts along the ceiling on the opposite side of thr room. I live in a nuring home.

Answer
Dell has many wireless display laptops for sale. I would check their website and see what is in your price range. As far as I'm aware their entire XPS line has wireless display capabilities. This is a pricey operation that you're looking to perform. You have to buy the laptop, TV, and wireless transmitter/receiver. It could run you close to 2000 dollars. If you're interested in watching TV from the internet, and already have a computer that works just fine, I'd suggest looking into a TV + Internet TV Box.

Apple TV
Boxee
Sony's Google/Android Box
Roku
and many others.

I'm sorry I don't have too many details, this is a tough question to answer when I don't know your budget, or your most common activities using these devices.

As for TV's, I would look for an LED TV that is on sale and has good reviews from customers who purchased it at the venue you'd also be purchasing it. A quick google search of "what to look for in an LED TV" may also help you out. I'm no TV expert, I don't even own one, I use a computer monitor instead.

Best of luck :)

Why does my LED TV flicker on some content?

my LED tv flickers on some scenes usually when playing pc games and watching some videos on my pc. It seems to happen on scenes which have a lot of contrast or alternating dark and bright parts of the picture! Does anyone know why is this and how to fix it?

Answer
That is a common issue with LEd tvs when going from bright to dark backgrounds, its a pop in.The contrast and actually the Tv should be calibrated to reduce action judders brightness pops etc.Go on AVS forums and see what Im talking about.I had horrendous issues on white backgrounds and halo, flashlighting etc,I have since gotten a plasma but LEDs for the most part have alot of issues with the way they display certain source content and most can be adjusted or calibrated out,and youll have a better picture also.if you cant afford a pro,use a cal disc like disneys wow or avia home theater, even THX discs have calibration tools built in.There a limitations to every technology and all need a bit of help to produce the best pic possible.

Can i improve my crysis pc game frame rate when connected to my led tv?

speedyalla

actually my crysis game runs at only 24 fps when i play from my laptop at max settings and there is absolutely no problem with key response when i play at max settings but only the reduced frame rate.and when i connect to my old lcd tv the frame rate is still the same and no problem.but now when i came to know all about the motion interpolation feature that the led tvs have,i became happy.i use this automotion plus feature to watch my blurays.it is extremely smooth.so if i connect my laptop to the tv and and play the crysis game which is only running at 23fps and if i turn on the automotion plus feature, then i would surely be able to play the game at improved fps rite?
as far as i know, there are only certain times when some flaws appear in the picture due to interpolation, but thats not a problem,i can live with that

Answer
Motion interpolation isn't recommended for gaming. It does not actually increase your framerate, it only makes it seem like it by blending the frames together. This also increases input delay considerably, which is definitely not ideal for gaming.
It's better for movies because you're not actually "playing" the movie like a game - no form of input is needed.

Between LCD, Plasma, and LED tv's and monitors, which one has the least chance of having an image burned into it?

Answer
None really. Burn in was an issue way back when but nowadays for any of those modern screens to get burn in it would take years of the same content continually.

How does the color black make LED TVs better?

Sean

Everyone makes a big deal about the black levels in LED TV's, but how does it make the picture any better?

Answer
On regular fluorescent backlit LCD TVs more light leaks through the liquid crystal pixels for the parts that are supposed to be "black" so it may look like a washed out gray instead of black. LED TVs are not as bad, but plasma and CRT are the only ones that can do real black. As an extreme example, turn the Brightness (not the Contrast) all the way up on your TV or computer monitor.... the picture won't look as good, now will it?

What should I be looking for when buying a new TV?

led tv looks like soap opera image

Zeiinab

Yes we still own those ugly pregnant TVs haha.
We're upgrading and I wanted to know what the best TVs are.
My dads refuses to look at any other company but Sony (bravia).
Someone I know recently got a Samsung smart TV but it was a really crappy screen display.
I know LCD LED over plasma any day I studied it in school but there is so many to choose from.
Which is best?

Answer
- Top brands: Panasonic (Plasma) > Samsung (LED) > Sony (LED) > LG (LED). Top off brands for LED: Vizio, Toshiba, Phillips.
= Plasma has best picture and audio quality. Plasma has least/no motion blur problems (less blur for more crisp/clear/higher resolutions and best contrast ratios for best color quality especially for blacks and best frequency/hz response times.ect). Newer Plasmas have improved their burn in problems by using technologies like pixel shifting/scrolling. Newer Plasmas haved improved their screen glare problems (and set vivid mode for bright rooms, has other picture modes depending on lighting of room). Newer plasmas use less energy consumption and last longer. Plasma are cheaper to buy, that's why LED is more popular because they want you to buy more expensive cheap made tv's (LCD is becoming discontinued because LED is a LCD tv with LED back/edge lights which improves many things like Plasma).

- I recommend 1920x1080 for movies, computer monitor/display, some tv shows, and some game console games and I recommend 1920x720 for some tv shows and some game console games. I recommend 40+ inches for movies and/or tv shows and 20-30 inches for computer monitor and 30-40 inches for game console games.
- FPS (frames per second): Every video consists of a number of frames per second, think of a video as a fast moving flip book. NTSC countries use 60i or 30i FPS (newer stations use 30p or 60p FPS) for tv shows. PAL/SECAM countries use 50i or 25i FPS (newer stations use 25p or 50p FPS) for tv shows. Movies use 24p/25p FPS (first movie to use 48p was LOTR: The Hobbit). Games use anywhere to 2 to 120 FPS (older games use lower FPS while newer games use higher FPS).
- TV refresh rate (measured in hz): Example, A tv with a refresh rate of 120 hz means it refreshes/flashes the entire screen 120 times a second.

- How do LED or LCD tv refresh rates work with the FPS of a video? (I recommend real/true 240hz refresh rate, some tv advertising may fool you by listing the fake interpolation or fake backlight scanning/dimming refresh rates).
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation (Names of the new technologies for newer tv's at the link): Motion Interpolation or Motion Compensated Frame Interpolation (MCFI), is a form of video processing in which new fake frames are generated between existing ones to up the FPS of a video to reduce motion blur and/or for judder removal/judder adjustment. MCFI video processing may cause gamer input lag and/or artifacts such as the soap opera effect (may ruin the look of a video).
- Many tv's allow viewers to turn motion interpolation (MCFI) off. The tv repeats the frames a certain number of times to match the tv's refresh rate. Example; To display 24 frames per second on a tv with a 120 hz refresh rate, each frame is repeated 5 times every 24th of a second.
- But what happens if the FPS of a video does not match the refresh rate of the tv? Then you get a pulldown, a pulldown is what causes a jittery screen (aka judder) because the tv repeats the odd frames a different amount of times the tv repeats the even frames. Example; A 3:2 pulldown is post popular because it is needed to match a 24 fps video with a 60hz refresh rate tv, odd frames are repeated 3 times (12x3=36) and even frames are repated 2 times (12x2=24) and 36+24=60 FPS for a 60hz refresh rate tv.

How does Plasma tv refresh rates work with the FPS of a video?
- It will take each pixel in a frame and and repeat it a number of times based on the number of sub-field drives (SFD) the tv has with it's refresh rate. Example 1; (NTSC countries) 600hz sub-field drive/motion tv means 60hz FPS x 10 sub-fields per frame = 600hz refresh rate. Example 2; (PAL/SECAM countries) 600hz sub-field drive/motion tv means 50hz FPS x 12 sub-fields per frame = 600hz refresh rate.
- What is focused-field drive (FFD) on Neo-Plasmas? (Light switching speed = better colors and less motion blur) 2500hz focused field drive means sub-fields are virtually packed into 1/2500th of a second as a sharp impluse, creating crisp motion images even in very very fast movining images (FFD is defined as a inverse of light emission period t. 1/t = 1/0.4ms = 2,500 FFD). Regular sub-feild drives like 50 FPS x 12 sub-fields = 600 hz, light emission spreads as wide as 1 field time (1/60th sec) maximum which results in blurry images for very very fast moving images.
- Refresh rates on Plasmas work similar to LED/LCD tv's. These settings are usually automatic, but you can change them in the advanced picture settings, Example 1; 2D 24p FPS mode and choose refresh rates of 48hz/96hz or 30hz/60hz with pulldown (might use interpolation frames for pulldowns), Example 2; 3D mode and choose refresh rates of 96hz for 24 FPS or 100hz for 50 FPS or 120hz for 60 or 24 fps.ect Of course it has gamer mode or many other adjustments.

Can you explain for me what the significance of refresh rate is on TV's?

2sxy4mashr

I need to know more about tv's before I can buy a tv for myself. What does refresh rate mean? And is a higher refresh rate better than a lower one? Also, what type of tv technology is the best? LCD, Plasma, or LED, and why?

Please, if you can make it as simple as possible, that would be great! Thank You!

Answer
When you see a TV with a refresh rate higher that 60hz, it's not just performing a simple refresh at a higher rate. When you change the refresh rate on your computer for example to 75hz, it's doing just that.

On a TV, it's actually performing something called 'frame interpolation'. It's creating frames that never existed (predicting what the next frame will look like based on current motion) and inserting them in between the real frames to combat blur and loss of motion resolution. It requires a massive number of calculations, and lag is the result so it's bad for gaming, and can result in audio sync issues with surround sound systems.

It also gives major motion pictures a creepy look called 'the soap opera effect', so it makes movies look like they were shot on a camcorder. So don't buy into the hype of this feature. I have a Philips LED/LCD TV that's 120hz, and it's always off, so it runs at 60hz.

I don't know that currently Plasma or LCD can be called better overall. They each have their pros and cons. Also, there's no such thing as LED TVs, they are still LCD they just use LED for the back light.

Plasma is my overall favorite, but when there are large patches of white, like say scenes in snow, the plasma TVs are very grey. LED/LCD can show large white patches no problem. Plasma has no off angle viewing issues, more natural color, and no ugly matte screens like LCD/LED TVs. Matte combats reflections, but image quality takes a hit. Notice the high end LED TVs never have matte screens.

The LED style can be crazy thin, but the newer plasma TVs are thin enough, and thickness does nothing for image quality so, I wouldn't get to caught up in it. I own both kinds, but if forced to pick one, I'll take a high quality full 1080p plasma over LCD/LED, currently panasonic makes the best, next would be samsung, and then finally LG.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/LG-55LM4600-55-1080p-120Hz-3D-LED-1.4-ultra-slim-HDTV/21693006#Specifications

Answer
That is the entry level 3D TV from the 2012 line up (the LM in the model number is the 2012 designation, LA is the 2013 lineup).

Overall - that series is considered to be a very decent TV. For that particular model...since it is the entry level...you will have somewhat less features than the higher up in the series (LM6200, LM6700, LM7600, LM8600, LM9600)...but overall it's not much different. This particular one does not have the Smart Features of the LM6200 and up...and it also doesn't have as good of processors as the LM7600 and up, but it should be decent enough for normal use.

As far as 3D and glasses are concerned. These TV's use passive 3D...meaning that (and this is in laymans terms) the picture is filtered in a way that when the glasses are put on...the left eye sees one picture and the right eye sees another...and your brain makes it 3D. Without glasses on...it will just look like an extremely out of focus picture.

As far as cons for this unit...there are 2:

1st (and this applies to a LOT of manufacturers and not just LG).
The 120Hz "Tru Motion Rate" is not the same thing as a 120Hz refresh rate. So - though it sort-of performs like a 120Hz TV...it really is a 60Hz panel. You will find this to be the case in most of the lesser expensive models from all manufacturers.

2nd:
Given that this is a left-over 2012 model...you are already starting out with 1 year old technology. Not saying that it's not good technology...but that there is already a newer model and any 2012 models are simply left-overs that didnt sell. You should expect to see a significant savings from the 2013 models. It's hard to price-compare an overstock model...since the major retailers who would normally carry these have already replaced them with 2013 models...so you can;t always rely on a quick google shopping search...as it's likely to come up with few results.

Overall though...$800 for a 55" 3D TV is not bad...so you certainly aren;t getting hosed at that price...but you just have to realize that it's marked down because it is in fact a 1 - 2 year old tv...even though its new.

best led tv on the market image
Q. I bought 55 inches LED TV recently. I would like to take it to India with me(planning to travel to india). Please suggest me the best way to carry it. Is it better to ship or will airlines allow me to carry this tv with me instead of one bag? How much does they charge in airlines and how much does they take if I ship? Answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
A bigger problem is the incompatibility of your set with the TV broadcast system in India. India uses the PAL system. North America uses the ATSC/NTSC system. Your TV won't receive local channels in India.

Also, the voltage mains there are 240v/50 hz. Your TV *might* be optionable for that voltage and line frequency--check your owner's guide. But as equipped for the U.S. market, it's set up for 110v/60 hz.

You might be better off returning your set for a refund if possible, and buying one locally in India. That also saves you the hassle and cost of transport, customs, etc.

What is the average lifespan of an LED TV viewed under the following settings?

Sarah C

I watch a ton of Blu-Rays, HD cable and video games kn mh Samsung 46" LED TV. It is now over a year old. I run it about 4-5 hours a day, backlight set to 7, brightness at 40, contrast at 100, dark levels at darkest. These settings look outstanding with what I watch and play.
Based on these settings, what would the approx. lifespan of my TV be?

Answer
Most tv in the market today are rated at 60,000 to 100,000 hours before they go half it's brightness. This also depends on the brand that you get. Any bargain price tv are not very reliable. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs along with the pro and con of each technology. You will notice that Panasonic dominates the list with a Plasma tv. In November issue of the magazine it named the Panasonic Plasma tv model VT25 as the best tv for 2010. If you read yahoo questions, you will notice that 95% of tv problems comes from LCD tv and 95% of those are the bargain price tv. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. I still have my first Pioneer Plasma tv model 4330 purchased in 2002 and have had no problems (purchase price was $6,400). Hope this will help you out.

I want to buy a new tv. A 1080p one mine is 720p and things look so much better on tvs at display at best buy and stuff. Especially 4k but I just want a 1080p 45+ inches what is a good price and brand? Looking to spend under 800 bucks but if its worth it I'll maybe go higher. But ya should I wait till Black Friday I've waited this long already and I'm already seeing deals for like 500 bucks for a 46" tv will there be even better deals on Black Friday? Sorry for the long question.

Answer
There are a few low end models that are sold below cost to drive people into the stores after Thanksgiving. But the better televisions (the ones you want) are not discounted.

There is also the "humiliation" factor. Some people sleep out front the night before for the chance to purchase one of 15 ultra-low priced televisions. It's just not worth it.

If you are not gaming - Samsung makes some nice LCD/LED/120 panels.

If you plan to do a lot of video gaming - Panasonic Plasma in native 720 (Yes - 720) start about $550 on Amazon and include the Gamer Mode to turn off processing which reduces gamer lag.

Note; You should pre-buy some HDMI cables as the stores make 50% mark up on the cables (This is where the store makes money). Try the "Media Bridge" brand HDMI cables from Amazon for $9-$20.

You also need to upgrade your TV service to include HD channels. A lot of people forget this and are disappointed at how lousy the new TV looks with seventy-year-old standard def. (480 has been around since 1948 and cannot change or it would not be backwards compatible).

So here is your checklist:

* HDMI cables (Media Bridge)
* Upgrade HDTV service
* Check out www.bestbluraydeals.com for discounts on BluRay players.
* New HDTV - Samsung/Panasonic/LG/Sharp

What components do I need for my home theater?

erv

Ex. What projector, brand of seats and so on
I am on a tight budget
Okay so I have 5000 for all the components including 5 seats

Answer
If you are on a tight budget, don't get a projector for your theater. Projectors lamp only last 2,000 hours and replacement cost can start from $100 to $400. You also need a projector screen which can cost you from $150 to $3,000. A decent 1080P projector can cost you from $1,500 to $10,000.
Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on all equipment you might consider for your home theater. Get a Plasma tv, they still provide the best picture quality than the LCD or LED tvs. A Panasonic Plasma 58" is now under $2,000. For a receiver get a Pioneer Elite, Onkyo, Denon or Yamaha. Speaker system: JBL, Infinity, Definitive Technology, Klipsch, Martin Logan, Energy, Mirage and Polk audio. Blu ray disc player a Panasonic DB-60 for under $200. You will find reviews on these equipment in Home Theater Magazine. Hope this will help you out.

How to fix PS3 slow controller response with LED TV?

led tv gaming

led tv gaming image
Q. We just got a new 55 inch Samsung LED TV, and when I tried to play Call of Duty on it, I immediately noticed the slower response between the controller and the game itself. It is very frustrating so I've just stopped playing it until I find a way to fix it. I've tried plugging it in, and that didn't help. Any solutions?

Answer
This is called input lag. Basically your TV is delaying by some fraction of a second between when it receives the signal and when it displays the image, to apply various visual/processing effects intended to make the image better. Obviously when you're watching a movie or TV, no problem. But it's a big problem when you're gaming.

The first thing to do is check the manual and see if your TV has a game mode. Game mode essentially runs the TV without all the fancypants filtering effects, thus reducing the lag. Hopefully this will pretty much fix the problem for you.

Other things to try... An HDMI cable might help, as it's likely faster than a component. And if you don't have game mode, you could probably play with the settings and turn most of the effects off manually. Again, your TV has to take time to compute those effects, and that's what's causing your delay.

Why won't my led tv give the best gaming graphics?

Q. I have a 40 inch Samsung led TV. I got it mainly for good gaming graphics, but it's not giving me really good results. I've seen other tv's have amazing gaming picture quality. How can I make the quality of gaming graphics better on an led TV?

Answer
You do not have a "LED" tv. You have an LCD tv with LED back-lighting. This it to improve black-levels.

For gaming - you also need 120 hz to reduce motion blur.

You may have failed to go to your game system and tell it you have a HDTV with 1080 resolution.

You may also need to properly adjust the Brightness, Contrast, Color. Get a Pixar movie and go to the disk setup menu. You will find test patterns and instructions for setting the basic TV settings.

Get your setup correct and it should improve things.

Note: Televisions in the stores are set to nearly 100% Brightness and Contrast to make them 'eye catching'. However this tends to loose fine details and colors will then bloom or expand into other areas. While it looks impressive for the 10-60 seconds you walk buy - it does not look good for long term viewing. So do NOT compare your screen to one you saw in a store display.

Hope this helps.

It does not find the laptop device. I have a Samsung LED TV UN6000 Model. Is there something I have to adjust on my TV Settings?

Answer
If you have connected your HDTV through HDMI,DVI-D or VGA port, make sure you set the resolution that is compatible to your HDTV,Then on your TV menu, select TV/AV mode or Aux mode.
On your laptop press and hold Function "Fn" key and one of F3,F4,F5 or F6 (depends on laptop model) to switch to your HDTV.

are there any settings that you can adjust on an LED tv to make the motion blur less noticeable?

paul r

i have a new Toshiba 50" LED tv with a 60Hz refresh rate. i know that the refresh rate controls the how smoothly fast moving images appear on a tv. But are there are settings that i could adjust for example the sharpness, noise reduction, edge enhancement that would make the motion blur less noticeable.

Answer
NO. This is a common issue with all LCD or LED tv that has a refresh rate of 60HZ. To reduce the blur motion you need the faster refresh rate of at less 120HZ. You can not change the refresh rate of the tv after you purchase one. Also, some bargain price tv will also have lag between video and audio, this is due to the slower response time fo the tv. Hope this will help you out.

What makes 3d led tv better than others like it?

Answer
There has been a lot of hype and confusion surrounding the introduction of "LED" Televisions. Even many marketing representatives and sales professionals that should know better are falsely explaining what an LED Television is to their prospective customers.

To set the record straight, it is important to note that the LED designation refers to the backlight system used in some newer LCD Televisions, not the chips that produce the image content.

LCD chips and pixels do not produce their own light. In order for an LCD television to produce a visible image the LCD's pixels have to be "backlit". For more specifics on the backlighting process needed for LCD Televisions,

LED TVs are still LCD TVs. It is just that these new sets use LED backlights rather than the fluorescent-type backlights used in most other LCD TVs.

In other words, LED TVs should actually be labeled LCD/LED TVs.

How LED Technology is Used In LCD TVs

The are currently two main ways that LED backlighting is applied in LCD flat panel televisions.

One type of LED backlighting is referred to as Edge Lighting. In this method, a series LED backlights are placed along the outside edges of the screen. The light is then dispersed across the screen. The advantage of this method is that the LED/LCD TV can be made very thin. On the other hand, the disadvantage of Edge lighting is that black levels are not as deep and the edge area of the screen has a tendency to be brighter than the center area of the screen.

The other type of LED backlighting is referred to as Full-Array. In this method, several rows of LEDs are placed behind the entire surface of the screen. The advantage is that these sets can employ "local dimming". Local dimming means that each LED or a specific group of LEDs can be turned on and off independently within certain areas of the screen, thus providing more control of the brightness and darkness for each those areas, depending on the source material being displayed. On the other hand, LCD TVs that employ full array backlighting are thicker than LCD TVs that employ an Edge-lit LED light source.

If you are considering the purchase of an LED/LCD Television, find out which brands and models are currently using the Edge or Full Array method and take of a look at each type when you go shopping to see which type of LED backlighting looks best to you.

What is the difference between edgelit led, backlit led and edgelit backlit led and Vizio TruLED TV?

Deacon Blu

LG, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, & Vizio are the only ones that I know of that make some kind of LED TV but they all use a different term when they mention the LED lighting.
Which is better?

Answer
Generally...the most expensive ones are the best!

Those are usually the backlit LED TVs(a.k.a. local dimming). They have the highest contrast ratios and best picture qualities! Edge lit LEDs have problems with back light uniformity and have lower contrast ratios!

Vizio's "TruLED" TVs are just their marketing words for backlit LED TVs! Their "RazorLED" TVs are their version of the Edge-lit LED TVs!

Basically...if the LED TV is super thin...it's an Edge-lit! If it's super expensive and not so thin...it's a back lit!

What are the pros and cons of having google tv or a type of internet television?

Spencer

Direct TV is getting ridiculous.

Answer
I just bought the Google TV. I have the 40" Sony Internet TV. After 2 days I decided to return it. It is the 3rd day, and decided to give it another chance. I just want to play l DVD's and stream video from wherever I can find it on the internet, no cable or sattelite bill. For this, it works. I do not give it any points for the web surfing abilities. Although it does have Chrome browser built in and gets wherever you want to go, the clunky remote sucks. No copy/paste, no right click. Most Chrome extensions do not work on Google TV. The "intuitive" remote may be intuitive for tech savvy folks, but not for me, it does not work like a PC keyboard at all. Advantages are everything is built in,-Chrome web browser, netfix, Twitter, Facebook, etc., and runs on Android OS, so as it catches on, potentially more apps will become available. I dont care for any of the apps as yet, I just want to stream video. The price is an advantage. I purchased the 40" at Target for $569 with the red rewards card. Not a bad price for a 40"LED 60hz 1080p. Fry's has the 46" for $699, so I will probably return it and get the 46" at Fry's. If I could afford it, I would get a bigger HDTV, and connect a PC via HDMI and wireless keyboard. Also Hulu and many other sites block Google TV. I don't know how they know you are on a GTV and not some other connected device, but they do. Most internet TV 's haves pre selected destinations like Netflix, flickr, etc and that's it. This is competively priced TV, that has a clunky input system for accessing the web. You would think that in 2012, Sony and Google could have done a much better job. This is a new interface, and it will get better, or not.

What are the rules in curling?Could someone please explain how the game is played?

levnest

I have been watching curling this year on tv @ the torino winter olympics. Seems to be an interesting game...but when watched it, i didn't understand how they got the points...I know there's a circular place called "the house" in the game, but dont understand what the goal of the game is.
Could someone please explain to me?

Answer
Curling is a precision team sport similar to bowls or bocce, played on a rectangular sheet of prepared ice by two teams of four players each, using heavy polished granite stones which they slide down the ice towards a target area called the house. Points are scored for the number of stones that a team has closer to the center of the target than the closest of the other team's stones. The level of precision and complex nature of the strategic thinking required to win has led curling to be referred to as "chess on ice."

Curling is played on a rectangular sheet of prepared ice into which two round, painted, archery-like targets (called the house) have been embedded. The game involves two teams of four players. These teams are called rinks and named for the teamâs captain, who is known as the âskipâ. Each team has eight polished granite stones, called stones or rocks, with which they try to score.

During each round of play, called an end, each player slides two stones along the surface of the ice. Play alternates between teams, each throwing one stone on their turn. The person throwing the stone influences where the stone stops by the amount of force used, called the weight, the spin (turn), and the direction of the throw. Additionally, the final position of the stone is changed by sweeping or brushing the path in front of the stone to reduce curl and increase distance. Once all the stones have been thrown during an end, the score is determined and the play reverses direction back to the other house.

The players are known as the lead, second, third and skip, and traditionally throw stones in that order . The skip acts as the teamâs captain, determining the position played by each player, strategy during the game, holding the broom in the house as a target for the shooters, and representing the rink. However, there is nothing in the rules to say where in the order the skip plays and in recent years the skip has thrown second or third stones on some teams.

The basic goal of each end is to have your curling stones nearer to the center of the target once all the stones from both teams have been thrown for that end. Therefore, the maximum number of points a team can earn per end is eight, though this is extremely rare because only the closest stones belonging to one of the two teams are counted. Strategies used during play, such as blocking (guard) and hitting rocks to reposition them (bump) or remove them from play (take-out) lead to lower scores. The term draw is used to describe a shot that comes to rest in the house without making contact with another stone. To peel means to remove both the target stone and the shooter's stone from play. For more information, see Types of shots below.

To help ensure the stone lands where intended, the skip stands in the house and indicates to the player throwing where to aim given the desired effect of the shot. The other two players sweep in front of the rock. Once thrown, players may not touch a stone while it is moving, so sweeping is the only way to influence the stone once thrown. Games, called matches, usually last eight ends, though in competitive curling there are usually ten ends and some recreational games last six ends.

A competitive game usually consists of ten ends. Recreational games are more commonly only eight or even six ends. An end consists of each player from both teams throwing two rocks with the players on each side alternating shots, for a total of sixteen rocks. If the teams are tied at the completion of ten ends an extra end is played to break the tie. If the match is still tied after the extra end, play continues for as many ends as may be required to break the tie. The winner is the team with the highest score after all ends have been completed.

It is not uncommon at any level for a losing team to terminate the match before all ends are completed if it believes it no longer has a realistic chance of winning. Most competitive tournaments require eight ends to be completed before allowing a losing team to concede in this manner. Competitive games will usually end once the losing team is "run out of rocks" - that is, once it has fewer stones in play and/or available for play than the number of points needed to tie the game in the final end.

In international competition each side is given 73 minutes to complete all of their throws. Each team is also allowed two 60 second timeouts per ten end game. If extra ends are required each team is allowed 10 minutes of playing time to complete their throws during the extra end. One added 60 second timeout is allowed in each extra end.

After both teams have delivered eight rocks, the team with the rock closest to the button is awarded one point for each of its own rocks that is closer than the opponent's closest rock. Rocks that are not in the house (further from the center than the outer edge of the 12-foot ring) do not score even if no opponent's rock is closer. A rock is considered in the house if any portion of its edge is over any portion of the 12-foot ring. Since the bottom of the rock is rounded, a rock just barely in the house will not have any actual contact with the ring, which will pass under the rounded edge of the stone, but it still counts.

The score is marked on a scoreboard, of which there are two types. One is the baseball type scoreboard, which is usually used for televised games. On this scoreboard the ends are marked by columns 1 through 10 (or 11 for the possibility of an extra end to break ties) plus an additional column for the total. Below this are two rows â one for each team. The number of points each team gets in an end is marked this way.

The other form of scoreboard is the one used in most curling clubs (see photo). It is set up in the same way, except the numbered row indicates points, not ends, and it can be found between the rows for the team. The numbers placed are indicative of the end. If the red team scores 3 points in the first end (called a three-ender), then a one (indicating the first end) is placed beside the number three in the red row. If they score two more in the second end, then a two will be placed beside the five in the red row indicating that the red team has five points in total (3+2). This scoreboard works because only one team can get points in an end. However, some confusion can exist if no team gets points in an end. This is called a blank end and the end number usually goes in the furthest column on the right in the row of the team who has the hammer (last rock advantage).

My sony 3d led tv's got a long line of burn in on the left side, I tried to clean it with led screen cleaning solution but no luck. Is there any way that I can fix this?, thanks

Answer
What you have is dead pixel and not burn in. I have never had any luck buying any Sony products at all. I purchase a 32" CRT tv in the 90's and that only lasted less than 3 years, then the first HDTV in the market a 34" HDTV from Sony. That also did not last more than 3 years. 2 DVD players when they first came out model 7000 and 7700 both at over $1,100 each and that also did not last over 3 years. They do not have a very good customer service support, they will just refer you to an authorized repair shop. If you read yahoo questions, you can read many problems from other customer with Sony product problems. My first Plasma tv from Pioneer purchased in 2002 is still running. Also have 4 other Panasonic Plasma tv and no problems. First generation blu ray disc player from Panasonic which is now over 4 years old and played over 300 blu ray disc movies without any problems. You may try calling or email Sony and see what they say. Hope this will help you out.

What is the new Samsung LED TV about?

Tom

What is the new technology behind the samsung led tvs? Does the screen actually use LED to produce the picture? If so how much better is the quality?

Answer
sorry tvtech1 is off just a little bit.
LED LCD tv's are not OLED tv's.
there is only one in the consumer market, sony makes it and it is only 11 inches, larger models are expected probably in 5 years
this is the only difference between a regular LCD and a LED LCD
all LCD tv's prior would use a white fluorescent lamp for the backlight. the problem is there is one lamp and it has to be on all the time. the tv uses filters to create blacks and shades of whites and blacks. since the light is always on, this is why LCD tv's have a lower contrast ratio. it is very difficult to filter completely and depending on the quality of the filters, colors can blend and mash together.

on the new LED LCD tv's
instead of the white lamp backlight, there is a sheet of thousands of LED's behind the front screen which provides the backlight for the tv. since the tv can control each LED(there are red, blue, and green LED's) it can turn them on and off in sections which causes the higher contrast levels and more accurate colors over a regular LCD tv.
the LED LCD's are getting on par with plasma tv's in regards to the contrast and color accuracy

the only concern in the market right now is that LED's burn out inconsistently and since the tech is fairly new, it is unknown when this will start to happen, which will cause issues with the overall picture. will it happen in 3, 5, 7, 10 years. manufactures do not know at this time

I tried to watch a dvd in my sony dvd player (about 5+ yrs old) that is hooked up to my samsung smart LED TV. The movie was all in blue color. I switched the cables and that didn't work. Any suggestions?

Answer
Your old dvd player more than likely has a component video output (Red, Green and Blue color rca jacks) and an optical audio output. If you are only using one cable for the color instead of 3 then you are not going to see the picture in true colors, just the blue. Look and see what it provides for a video output, one Yellow color rca jack might be provide. Hope this will help you out.

My name IS

I mean it has a good point to it I guess, but its horrible. The boys mom pushed him to suicide and then became a hero for it.

And in the beginning they say that dogs aren't gay or something like that, HELLO plenty of dogs are gay. Homosexuality has been observed in thousands of species.

That and I don't really think Bobby had it bad enough to kill himself anyway.

Answer
Read the book, the actual true horror story of what really happened to Bobby Griffith. That finally pushed him over the edge,to make him draw straws and commit his suicide. Caused from the daily verbal, mental, physical abuse, threats and religious anti gay hate preaching from his mother, Mary Griffith is quite shocking.

This wasn't told or shown at all as it was written in the book, it was transformed into 120 minutes of a complete waste of time. After reading the book, hearing they were going to make this book into a film and Sigourney Weaver was going to play the abusive christian mother Mary Griffith. I thought this film would be really good and worth seeing. When it was shown here, in Australia a few years ago. I was very disappointed after seeing it.

As usual the real horror story of what happened, was made into this typical predictable American watered down and heartfelt modified rubbish. With American religious over tones and the over used hero and flag waving at the end. Just like in all American made TV shows and films. Rather than showing the actual facts and religious anti gay abuse, that led Bobby to commit suicide.

If they made this true horror story of what really happened to Bobby Griffith into a film, exactly as it was written in the book. The film would have an restricted rating, and probably a bunch of American Christians in your country.

All protesting to have it banned to save face, outside of cinemas where it was being shown or television stations where it was being broadcast.Over Mary Griffith's open confession, written in the book. Of committing religious anti gay abuse and hatred on and towards her son Bobby, which led to his suicide in the 70's. Which in 2010 is still being used on all lgbt persons across the USA.

This wasn't the Prayers for Bobby movie, I and thousands of others who read the book were expecting to see.

Why do Filipinos think USA is superior? And why do they think English is Superior?

Coqui

Other nations embrace all their history and culture while in Philippines they try to supress and eliminate part of it and tried to replace.

Answer
Because the Philippines were colonized by the USA, everything that they see linked to the US is considered superior.

The treatment of Whites by Filipinos as superior stems from their 5 century colonization by Whites - first by Portugal (some parts), followed by three centuries of Spain, a 6-year interruption by British, then 50 years of American rule - the status of Whites and half-Whites in the Philippines as a colony was very high than that of the indigenous Malayo-Polynesian or of the immigrant Chinese, Japanese, Indian, or American Indian peoples.

This has been reinforced by TV shows, which particularly prefer air actors who are obviously of White descent.

Also, the education of the Philippines has led to the increase of English-speaking rich people (who by the way, are mostly of White descent) - and since the education of the poor people in the provinces tend to be staffed by badly-trained teachers who used Filipino in the classroom - a strata grew - and it divided the Philippines into two countries: the Rich, who are mostly descended from earlier Spanish, American, or Chinese settlers, speak English and another European language or Chinese, and are greatly Americanized, and the Poor, who are mostly indigenous Malayo-Polynesians, speak Philippine languages, and have a culture which is Hispano-Asian.

Of course, there is no doubt that colonial policies were made to favor the White settlers and their offspring. While White settlement in the Philippines was not as great as that in either America or Australia, it nevertheless made the Philippines as the world's largest Eurasian and Amerasian nation - or having the world's largest population of mixed White and Asian descent. It also has Asia's largest White population.

There is also the antsy Middle-Class professionals which always tries to reach the "Rich" but are shunned - they have also adopted the English language and lots of cultural values from America but still are not considered as same ranks with the Rich, possibly by virtue of their ancestry - which is mostly either indigenous or mainland Asian with only minimal White admixtures, if any.

Most Filipinos don't readily admit it, but social status in the Philippines is nearly entirely based on race, cultural affiliations, and education.

I went to the Monster cable website and its useless in helping me search for specific HDMI cables. I want the best picture possible but i dont know what to look for. I heard gold is good but dont even know what that means. I have a 60" LED TV.

Answer
- Short answer: You can find good cheap hdmi cables at monoprice or amazon (many brands).
= DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON EXPENSIVE MONSTER CABLES.
- Since you don't know much that's why the long answer is below.

- HDMI is digital (no analog to digital conversions) and uses TMDS which is Transition Minimized (shortens transitions using 8bit to 10 bit encoding) and Differential Signaling (shielded twisted wires and measuring systems to eliminate EMI/RFI or other noise in those small transitions).
- Depending on the manufacturers max build quality (materials): v1.4 hdmi cables can do 1920x1080p/24bpp/60hz up to 15 feet for 28 AWG, up to 25 feet for 26 AWG, up to 50 feet for 24 AWG, up to 100 feet for 22 AWG. v1.4 hdmi cables can do 4096x2160p/24bpp/24hz or 3840x2160p/24bpp/30hz up to 10 feet for 28 AWG, up to 12 feet for 26 AWG, up to 15 feet for 24 AWG, up to 25 feet for 22 AWG, up to 15 feet for 36 AWG RedMere, up to 50-60 feet for 28 AWG RedMere.
- With bad build quality, connectors and/or pins can break if you unplug and plug a lot and if it's a thick (lower AWG) cable and the cable weighs a lot when hanging when plugged in can also break connectors and/or pins. With bad build quality a cable will not take much bending and/or squashing abuse, and also it may not have protection against fire, water, and cuts.
= So what does any of this mean? If there is to much interference/noise even after TMDS, it will mute the video/audio (example: %95 of the video is fine quality while %5 of it is missing OR you get %100 no picture), if it did not mute it then you will get a regular artifact such as sparkles(color problems) or blur, or static/snowy .ect pixels. If the build quality (AWG) is not good enough the signal will not reach from one end to the other thus you get %100 no picture (especially if the cable is broken) or some artifacts. Also hdmi cables can have communication channel protocols such as DDC/HDCP or TMDS or CEC or ARC or HEC and the input+output devices talk to each other, if there is any communication error between one of the channels, then that's channel's feature will not work.

- MONOPRICE: http://www.monoprice.com/ = Popular (famous for their hdmi cables), Best Quality for the price (very high/good review ratings), Cheap (lowest prices and discounts for buying in bulks), Safe (no viruses and secure purchases.ect).
- Recommended cable from monoprice: 1 ft. to 15 ft. & $3.28 to $15.07: = 24AWG CL2 High Speed HDMI® Cable w/ Net Jacket = (Buy separate, I think 22AWG will fit, but not 24AWG will not: Ferrite Cores (1 PAIR) for 22AWG HDMI® Cable).
- Recommended cable from monoprice: 6 ft. to 15 ft. & $9.67 to $19.94: = 24AWG CL2 Silver Plated High Speed HDMI® Cable (buy separate: Ferrite Cores (1 PAIR) for 24AWG HDMI® Cable).
- Recommended cable from monoprice: 3 ft. to 50 ft. & $9.90 to $58.58: = RedMere - Ultra Slim Series High Performance HDMI® Cables.

- Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ = Popular (many popular hdmi brands/sellers), Good Quality and Cheap (you can find good quality hdmi cables cheap), Safe (I recommend Prime: Free shipping and products sold by or fullfield by amazon).
- Some brands I looked at: AmazonBasics 2-Pack, Cable Matters Ultimate Series, Mediabridge Ultra series, BlueRigger, StarTech, C2G / Cables to Go Velocity = I plan on adding more to the list later but I like monoprice the best so far.

- HDMI cable (v1.4): Standard speed up to 1920x1080i/24bpp/60hz or 1280x720p/24bpp/60hz. High speed up to 4096x2160p/24bpp/24hz or 3840x2160p/24bpp/30hz or 2560x1600p/24bpp/60hz or 1920x1080p (48bpp/60hz or 24bpp/120hz or 24bpp/60hz for 3D). (HDMI v1.0 to v1.2, high speed is similar to DVI-SL, standard speed is similar to component).
- HDMI (v1.3 to v1.4) cable: Up to 7.1/24bit/96khz or 5.1/24bit/192khz (192khz for PCM). Up to 8 channels (7.1) uncompressed PCM and lossless compression surround sound formats DTS-HD-MA or Dolby TrueHD and lossy compression surround sound formats DTS-HD-HR, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS 96/24, DTS-ES Discrete, DTS, or Dolby Digital.
= You need a hdmi cable that has ethernet channel do be capable of doing the ethernet feature (a feauture that's built into the cable). You need a hdmi cable with enough bandwidth to support 3D or 4k x 2k resolutions (newer hdmi versions added more bandwidth to support those features, but it's up to input+output device to do/have those features). (Tip: If you have a receiver (input device) or output device that does not support DTS-HD-MA, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD-HR, or Dolby Digital Plus bitstreams, you can tell your output device to decode it into PCM and then send it over the hdmi cable to the reciever).

- 24K Gold connectors+internal+pins prevent corrosion that would otherwise impede signal transfer and could damage connections on equipment.
- Full metal zinc alloy connector heads protect against EMI/RFI or other noise. Ferrite cores have magnetic materials that asborb EMI/RFI or other noise, but they can be bulky for side by side connections.
- Screened shielded twisted pair (S/STP or S/FTP): Usually uses three layers of sheilding of 100% aluminized+Mylar foil and %100 copper/tin braid metal-to-metal shielding for protecting against EMI/RFI or other noise (conductors are usually copper and are covered in insulation, there may be drain wire too a few more other stuff).
- TPE, APE, or PVC.ect jacket is a cheap and felxible insulator for the whole cable. Net jacket or nylon mesh jacket is a additional layer of protection for the cable jacket to keep it safe from knicks and cuts that otherwise might penetrate the jacket and render the cable useless.
- AWG stands for "American Wire Gauge." It is the thickness of the wire inside the cable. The lower number AWG denotes thicker wiring and thicker overall cable. Thicker cables are recommended for longer cable runs because they offer less resistance along the signal path (more bandwidth). Thicker cables become less flexible and the weight can pull connecters out of connections.

is there way to add more places for cords in back of tv so can add dvd and game system?

Ok I have a led tv and in the back theres only one row of the colorful circles thing where you plug in the cables to hook up your dvd player or game system with. But Im getting tired of always having to unplug them and plug in new one everytime I want to watch dvd to playing a game.
