Answer
The fact is, no one brand can claim to have the best sets in every classification, nor the worst. Any individual model from any manufacturer can be a superior set, and any single sample of any model can be a fine TV, even if that model gets poor reviews.

Your best bet is to review "top ten" lists and similar evaluations that are done by professional labs like Consumer Reports. If you do, you'll find that one manufacturer has the best 50 inch plasma set, another one has the best 50 inch LCD-LED set, and still another one has best 42 inch set, and so on.

I can strongly recommend the March 2011 issue of Consumer Reports for one of the best listings of TVs in all categories that you'll find anywhere, plus basic info on everything related to modern digital television.

Which HDTV would I be better off getting?

steve b

I plan on getting a new HDTV soon, I'm stuck between getting a 50 inch sanyo LCD 1080p 60hz or a 50 inch toshiba LED 1080p 60hz , both are 548 dollars. Im all about picture quality. Which one do you all recommend I get?

Answer
I highly recommend you go on line to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs, along with the pro and con of each technology. You will notice that Panasonic has more Plasma tv being recommended than any type of tv from other manufacturer. You are not going to see any tv being recommend made by Sanyo or Toshiba. The 60HZ LCD or LED tv will have blur motion problem when watching fast action sports or playing video games. Those bargain price tv also have a slower response time, which will have lag between audio and video. If you read yahoo questions all the time, you will notice that 95% of tv problems comes from LCD/LED and 95% of those are the bargain price tv. Hope this will help you out.

How does the color black make LED TVs better?

Everyone makes a big deal about the black levels in LED TV's, but how does it make the picture any better?

Answer
On regular fluorescent backlit LCD TVs more light leaks through the liquid crystal pixels for the parts that are supposed to be "black" so it may look like a washed out gray instead of black. LED TVs are not as bad, but plasma and CRT are the only ones that can do real black. As an extreme example, turn the Brightness (not the Contrast) all the way up on your TV or computer monitor.... the picture won't look as good, now will it?

Why does my led tv buzz when I dim the lights in my room?

Ryan

I've read other people have had the same problem with led tv's, but usually their problem is corrected when they turn the backlight on their tv all the way up. My tv still buzzes at any backlight setting. I live in a somewhat new house, I wouldn't think that's its a problem with the wiring. When my room lights are turned all the way up their is a faint buzz, but when I dim my lights in my room the buzz gets much louder and I can hear it over the tv at times during quiet scenes. Would a power conditioner help me? or should I consider a replacement tv? Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer
Wow....I use a dimmer and my LED is unaffected. I would change the coaxial cable between the wall and the Cable box (or TV receiver) and/or the coaxial cable (if you're using one) between cable box and TV. I'm suspecting a loose ground shield may cause this type of problem. The dimmer switch itself is probably radiating some noise that's being picked up by the TV. I'm thinking that replacing the TV may not eliminate the problem.

LG Full LED TV Infinia 55LE8500?

 on ... UN75F8000 75-Inch 1080p 240Hz 3D Ultra Slim Smart LED HDTV Review
led tv thin bezel image

Edward

Hi everyone,

I have been reading many reviews concerning LED TVs and am quite interested in the LG Infinia range, I noticed that on the internet are pictures of the 55LE8500 model with an ultra thin case (bezel) that is only 8mm thick which gives 80% picture. Unfortunately all the models I've seen for sale though do not have such a thin case. Am I missing out on the model numbers or was the 55LE8500 not created with such a thin case? Thanks!

Answer
The 8mm bezel in that particular tv is reffering to the small area at the very bottom where the built in controls are at, not the border that surrounds the screen.

What is the difference between the LG LM9600 and LM8600?

John

3D TV or Smart TV

Answer
Both are high-end TVs of LG's 2012 3d tv line-up. Definitely both have smart tv as almost all high end TVs released nowadays are equipped with built-in smart tv system. Both have of course LG's 3D passive technology, comes with the 2012 motion magic remote, wi-fi capable, and powered with dual-core processor, thin bezels

The differences of the two are the LM8600 is available in 42, 47, and 55-inch only while the LM9600 has the massive 84-inch NANO Full LED display. The LM9600 also has a 240hz rating while the LM9600 has a 480hz rating.

Im planning on getting a big screen tv like maybe around 42 or so and I play video games alot. I know theres a few different kinds and some of them arent good for people that play video games because theres a high risk of burn in or something like that.

Answer
LCD or LED tv are safe for gaming. If you want better picture quality, deeper black and less power consumption, LED is your good choice but more expensive. If you want to save money then LCD TV are great to get.

When is the best time to buy a new tv? Before or after the Superbowl?

jackie99

Could someone give a brief overview of the differences between LED and HDTV? (I am thinking of purchasing something around 40 inches.)
Also, my purchase would not have to coincide with a Superbowl party. Do you think that prices would be better before or after the game? Or is there a better time of year to purchase a new televsion as new models are introduced?

Answer
There are 3 type of HDTV which popular in market now LCD HDTV, Plasma HDTV and LED HDTV.

Plasma uses gas plasma cells charged by precise electrical voltages to create a picture.

LCD screens (liquid crystal display) are in layman's terms sandwiches made up of liquid crystal pushed in the space between two glass plates. Images are created by varying the amount of electrical charge applied to the crystals

LED-backlit LCD television or LED TV is an LCD TV that uses LED backlighting rather than fluorescent lights used in traditional LCD televisions

Each technology have their pro & con, here are pro & con for your decision

Pros of Plasma
- Better contrast ratio
- better ability to render deep blacks, more color depth,
- better motion tracking (response time)
- more availability in very large screen sizes.

Cons of Plasma
- more susceptible to burn-in (although this is not as much of a factor now, due to technology improvements in the past few years)
- more heat generation (as well as more power consumption)
- screen glare in brightly lit rooms
- heavier weight, and more delicate to ship.
Good brand that I would recommend for Plasma is Panasonic or Samsung
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26redirect%3Dtrue%26ref_%3Dsr%255Fnr%255Fp%255Fn%255Fsize%255Fbrowse-bin%255F3%26bbn%3D979929011%26qid%3D1264987075%26rnid%3D1232878011%26rh%3Dn%253A172282%252Cn%253A%2521493964%252Cn%253A1266092011%252Cn%253A172659%252Cn%253A979929011%252Cp%255Fn%255Ffeature%255Fthree%255Fbrowse-bin%253A724228011%252Cp%255Fn%255Fsize%255Fbrowse-bin%253A1232882011&tag=computer0bd-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

Pros of LCD
- LCD television advantages include no burn-in susceptibility
- cooler running
- less screen glare, more functional at high altitudes
- longer display life (although improvements are being made in Plasma screen life)
- looks better in brightly lit rooms
- less power consumption than Plasma.
Cons of LCD
- Lower contrast ratio
- not as good rendering deep blacks
- not as good at tracking motion (although this is improving, especially with the implementation of 120Hz refresh rates (and some now offer 240Hz) on higher-end models).
Good brand for LCD that I would recommend is Samsung or Sony
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26redirect%3Dtrue%26ref_%3Dsr%255Fnr%255Fp%255Fn%255Ffeature%255Fthree%255Fbr%255F0%26bbn%3D979929011%26qid%3D1264987075%26rnid%3D724226011%26rh%3Dn%253A172282%252Cn%253A%2521493964%252Cn%253A1266092011%252Cn%253A172659%252Cn%253A979929011%252Cp%255Fn%255Fsize%255Fbrowse-bin%253A1232882011%252Cp%255Fn%255Ffeature%255Fthree%255Fbrowse-bin%253A724227011&tag=computer0bd-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

Pros & Cons of LED is almost same as LCD but LED come with better contrast ratio, better picture quality , super slim and 40% less power consumption but higher price

Can I use my sceptre E243BV as a monitor?

jacob

I have a sceptre E243BV 24" led tv and I was wondering if it would be good to use as a pc monitor. I'm going to be mostly gaming and browsing on this pc. It has 60 Hz. So would it be good to use? Thanks!

Answer
It will work. It has a good screen resolution. I prefer 2ms response time and 120Hz refresh rate for smooth flow, and a higher contrast ratio than 1000:1 (I looked up the model)
It will work for what it is as long as you are happy enough with the flow on the screen and picture vividness.

I actually went the other way, using a 2ms high contract ratio computer monitor for a TV, because a tuner is pretty useless since it is only for the free broadcasts. Once with a cable box and DVD/Bluray, TV and monitor are the same thing.

How do I get full resolution on my LED tv from my PS3 via HDMI?

It's not a problem with the PS3 or the TV, it's the game. Not all games support full 1080p.

I just bought this tv from Best Buy as a floor model and heavily discounted for $670. I got the 55 inch one. I feel great about the purchase, especially at that price, since I looked elsewhere, and even now, these sets are selling for upwards of $1300-1500.

Anyways, my main question is this...

Is this set calibration worthy? I want to get it calibrated but have read that on some basic sets, it's not even worth it since there is very limited options to tweak.
Is this one of those types of sets or is it considered a mid-high end LED tv?

Answer
Check the owner's manual for the procedure to reset the TV to its factory defaults, then do it. You shouldn't need to pay for anything, and the default settings should give you a great picture from any source. If you want, you can tweek any of the optional adjustments a little to see what you get. If you make a mess of it, you can always reset the defaults and start over.

What is the best sound system to buy?

I want to buy a sound system for my new Samsung 55 inch LED TV. I'm not sure what's a good sound system to buy for my TV.

Answer
Buy a receiver from a name like Marantz, Harman/Kardon, Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha, or Pioneer.
Then get a pair of speakers from Bowers & Wilkins, Paradigm, Infinity, Mirage, Polk, JBL, JL Audio, Energy, Wharfedale, Boston Acoustics, KEF, Velodyne... There's a lot and I can't yet name them all off the top of my head.
here is a helpful guide:

And a good read if you're considering either of Bose's systems: http://intellexual.net/bose.html

Answer
LG has the LG55LV5500; Samsung, the UN55D6000; Sony, the EX620. All are 55-inch and under $1500.

The Samsung has a higher refresh rate than the other two (240 Hz vs 120 Hz) and 30-watts of audio power vs 20 watts for the other two.

What is the best TV for me?

HiTMANOXO

Id mostly use it for xbox 360 n ps3 n some tv im lookin for 50-52" what would be the best for under 1500

Answer
Get a Plasma. You'll get vivid colors, true blacks, deep contrast. You'll get a near instantaneous response time (0.001ms). You'll get the best TV option you can in a TV of that size and with that budget.

People will tell you that you shouldn't because of burn-in. But get a Panasonic or Samsung and you're fine. They offer anti-image retention features above and beyond the advances in the technology. Plasma stopped with the burn-in issue years ago. But it can't shake the reputation.

If you are really drawn to LCDs, then at least make sure you get some premium features for a 50" set. You will notice the advantages of having them (or see the flaws without them). So focus on 1080p and 120Hz/240Hz. If possible aim for LED LCD, though that might be above your budget.

Right now at Best Buy,

Panasonic TC-P50G10 - $1,400 on sale reg $1,600
- perhaps the best 50" TV you can own.

Panasonic TC-P50S1 - $1,200 on sale, reg $1,400.
- very strong set, but gives up some contrast to the G10

Samsung PN50B650S1F - $1,300 on sale, reg $1,600
- a solid choice from Samsung

LCDs

Sharp Aquos LC52D85U - $1,300 reg $1,700
Sony KDL-52S5100 - $1,500 reg $1,800

Again, I still recommend the Plasma, especially with your budget. I think for an LCD you would need to go down a size so you could say get a better model Sony or Samsung. Or you would need to increase you budget a couple hundred bucks at least. But I don't think you'll find any LCD that can beat the G10 from Panasonic. I highly recommend checking that one out in a store.

What is the best TV to get?

lilly10120

No games to play on the TV - just watch it. I'm thinking about buying a new one. Can you tell me the best to get?

Answer
Your choice will most likely come down to Plasma or LCD however, donât write off projection TVs. Rear projection TVs (RPTVs) donât provide quite the image quality and viewing angle of LCD and Plasma TVs but you canât beat them for price and screen size. Front projection devices can sit on a table or hang from the ceiling and throw a very large, high definition image on a screen or living room wall. To make the process of selecting the right HDTV display for you weâll provide an overview of the market and link to reviews and more information. Retrevo selects LCD TV reviews and Plasma TV reviews from some of the most respected reviewers of HDTV displays.

LCD vs. PLasma

By far the most popular TVs sold today are either LCD or Plasma. LCD TVs have enjoyed pricing benefits from using the same screens manufactured for computers but only up to a moderate size. Plasma TVs have the pricing edge on displays in the over 50 inch department.

Bruce Berkoff who heads up the LCD TV Association advises consumers to buy 32â and smaller sets today before they become less available and more expensive later this year. At he same time Berkoff predicts that 47â to 52â LCD TVs will come down in price in time for the holiday shopping season.

LED backlighting is starting to show up in laptop LCD displays like the MacBook Pro, replacing fluorescent backlights. White LEDs provide a brighter screen with increased contrast. Future TVs will not only offer white LED backlights but will also add red, green, and blue LED backlights that will enhance the whole image quality. Bruce Berkoff adds a dose of reality, âI wouldnât expect to see LED backlights in affordable LCD TVs for at least a year and maybe two.â

Best Plasma TVs

Pioneer still leads the market with the highest rated Plasma displays. The Pioneer Elite PRO-FHD1, incorporates all the latest plasma technology like Deep Encased Cell Structure to produce images that reviewers say are artifact-free, rich, and natural. This 50 inch display can be purchased for well under $4,000. All the reviews for the Pioneer Elite PRO-FHD1 are on Retrevo. The new Panasonic TH-50PX77U uses an antiglare coating to reduce one of the objectionable problems with plasma displays. This TV gets high marks from reviewers and users for accurate colors and deep blacks. It costs less than $2,000.

Best LCD TVs

Youâll pay about $2,500 for the Sharp Aquos LC52D62U, a 52â LCD TV but youâll be buying one of the top rated models that gets high marks for image quality, contrast levels, and shadow detail. The 40 inch Sony BRAVIA KDL-40XBR2 costs a little over $2,000. It offers a very wide viewing angle and has been consistently mentioned among the top rated LCD TVs for over a year. Read the reviews for the Sony BRAVIA KDL-40XBR2 at Retrevo. At $800, the Olevia Synrax Brillan is one of the best values on the market for a 37 inch LCD TV. It doesnât support 1080p resolution but on a TV this size, that shouldnât be a big issue.

We hope this helps. If you need more information on any consumer electronics check out http://www.retrevo.com and browse through our search engine of manuals, reviews, products or keep up on the latest consumer electronics news and insights through our blog at http://blog.retrevo.com/.

Will Wii ever be HD effectively?

Psychosync

I just got a Wii and a Vizio 26" LCD LED television. I hooked the Wii up with component cables. When I play Twilight Princess (Wii version) I notice that it looked less "blocky" on my CRT tv. I know that this is because the Wii only supports resolution up to 480p and my tv does up to 720p. Will Nintendo ever make a Wii that fixes this problem? It seems kind of backward that upgrading to a better tv makes games look more pixelated.

Answer
Not this Wii thats for sure. Maybe the next generation which should come out sometime between the years 2014-2016.

What makes 3d led tv better than others like it?

Answer
There has been a lot of hype and confusion surrounding the introduction of "LED" Televisions. Even many marketing representatives and sales professionals that should know better are falsely explaining what an LED Television is to their prospective customers.

To set the record straight, it is important to note that the LED designation refers to the backlight system used in some newer LCD Televisions, not the chips that produce the image content.

LCD chips and pixels do not produce their own light. In order for an LCD television to produce a visible image the LCD's pixels have to be "backlit". For more specifics on the backlighting process needed for LCD Televisions,

LED TVs are still LCD TVs. It is just that these new sets use LED backlights rather than the fluorescent-type backlights used in most other LCD TVs.

In other words, LED TVs should actually be labeled LCD/LED TVs.

How LED Technology is Used In LCD TVs

The are currently two main ways that LED backlighting is applied in LCD flat panel televisions.

One type of LED backlighting is referred to as Edge Lighting. In this method, a series LED backlights are placed along the outside edges of the screen. The light is then dispersed across the screen. The advantage of this method is that the LED/LCD TV can be made very thin. On the other hand, the disadvantage of Edge lighting is that black levels are not as deep and the edge area of the screen has a tendency to be brighter than the center area of the screen.

The other type of LED backlighting is referred to as Full-Array. In this method, several rows of LEDs are placed behind the entire surface of the screen. The advantage is that these sets can employ "local dimming". Local dimming means that each LED or a specific group of LEDs can be turned on and off independently within certain areas of the screen, thus providing more control of the brightness and darkness for each those areas, depending on the source material being displayed. On the other hand, LCD TVs that employ full array backlighting are thicker than LCD TVs that employ an Edge-lit LED light source.

If you are considering the purchase of an LED/LCD Television, find out which brands and models are currently using the Edge or Full Array method and take of a look at each type when you go shopping to see which type of LED backlighting looks best to you.

Right now I am using Samsungâs 32â LED TV and enough satisfied with its performance. Know why should I go for oled TV if I have to choose one? When even it also cost a lot high than led TV.

Answer
Because there are many advantages of OLED TVs as compared to LED TV, like low power consumption, better contrast ratio, wide viewing angle, very fast response, no back light needed, thinner, lighter, and can display deep black levels. Of course it is expensive at present because it is the latest tech. in the market in the field of TV display and hope the price will go down very soon.
