I am considering purchasing a flat screen tv and would like to know any flaws in the two and would like to know how each works. PLEASE NO sales pitches or buyers guides, just info on their flaws, benifits, and quality.

Answer
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

⢠HD resolution from 1280x720 pixels through 1920x1080 pixels in a variety of panel sizes.
⢠LCD panel fabrication is a mature technology - now in 7th and 8th generation motherglass production for major fabs.
⢠LCDs are transmissive in operation, i.e. liquid-crystals emit no light themselves they simply "modulate" the amount of light passing through them. Essentially liquid-crystals act as shutters to control the amount of light from a (cold cathode fluorescent) backlight. The source of illumination is independent of individual liquid crystal pixels.
⢠Randomly-arranged liquid crystals pass light in their normally âoffâ state and block light in âonâ state.
⢠Color is produced in direct view, flat-panel LCDs using RGB micro filters and on projectors using a dichroic prism or spinning color wheel (the latter has rapidly fallen into disfavor among manufacturers.)
⢠Brightness is 3 to 5 times higher than comparably sized plasma displays; LCD can achieve brightness exceeding 400 nits at full white.
⢠Contrast ratio is approximately 1/4 to 1/2 that of plasma displays. Average ANSI contrast ratios measure between 147:1 and 170:1.
⢠Typical black level is undesirably high at 1.7 nits (eight times higher than conventional CRTs!) Dimmable backlights help to provide lower black levels and better contrast numbers.
⢠Predicted life of backlight is approximately 60,000 hours at 200 nits (not at full power mode)
⢠Improved backlight and color performance can be obtained using triluminous LED backlight technology; achievable brightness up to 450 nits and lifespan estimated up to 100,000 hours.
⢠LCDs consume less power than similarly sized plasma displays.
⢠LCDs weigh less than similarly sized plasma displays.
⢠Liquid-crystal response or switching time (LC twist times) is slow for video - between 8 ms and 16 ms; this can cause ghosting or smearing in video images containing fast motion.
⢠LCDs have trouble with low-level shadow detail resulting in "crushed" grayscales.
⢠Color saturation is inferior to emissive displays though LED backlighting can help.
⢠LCDs have higher pixel density than plasma panels.
 ⢠No image burn-in.
____________________________________

Plasma Display Panel (PDP)

⢠Plasma display panels (aka, PDPs) - monitors and TVs - are emissive devices, i.e., each individual pixel emits light. Image brightness is directly proportional to the intensity at which individual pixels are driven.
⢠Power consumption is 15-20% more than LCD for a given size.
⢠Weight is 20-25% higher than LCD for a given size.
 ⢠Mature technology since early 1960s.
⢠Each cell uses mixture of noble gases (neon, argon, etc.)
⢠AC discharge in each cell stimulates ultraviolet radiation causing color phosphors to glow and form picture elements; similar in principle to fluorescent tube operation.
 ⢠PDP TVs produce roughly 72 to 299 nits (21 to 87.4 foot-Lamberts) of luminance.
⢠Average ANSI contrast ratios measure approximately between 596:1 and 772:1.
⢠Typical black level is 0.21 nits (roughly the same as a typical CRT.)
⢠Waffle-like Deep Cell pixel structure and improved filters enhance contrast, black level, and luminous efficiency.
⢠Predicted life of phosphors is approximately 60,000 hours at 80 nits (not in full power mode.)
⢠Image burn-in is a serious concern; therefore PDPs are not an ideal choice for console gaming or computer use. (Note: some models utilize 'picture orbiting' and low power modes to combat image burn-in.)
⢠Plasma displays have trouble with high- and low-level shadow detail resulting in false contours.
⢠No problems with video containing fast motion; PDPs possess faster pixel switching times (full motion at 60 Hz) - progressive video sources are the best.
⢠PDPs consume more power and generate more heat than LCDs; PDPs get noticeably warm.
⢠Pixel pitch is rarely less than 0.8mm which requires a larger, more expensive panel to achieve true 1080p.
⢠PDPs have wide viewing angles (160 degrees H and V.)
⢠PDPs possess greater color saturation and are capable of achieving lower levels of gray.
____________________________________

Alternatives to LCD and plasma display technology:

Organic Light-emitting Diodes (OLEDs)
 ⢠Self emissive
 ⢠Low voltage
 ⢠Super thin displays
 ⢠Saturated, bright colors
 ⢠High contrast
⢠Ultra fast response times for video
 ⢠Very wide viewing angles

Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Displays (SEDs)
 ⢠Super-flat version of a CRT
⢠Wide color gamut and bright colors
⢠Black level and grayscale performance equivalent to modern CRT
 ⢠High brightness ~300 nits (~87.7 ft-L)
 ⢠Very high contrast ratios
 ⢠Fast response times for video
 ⢠Very wide viewing angles
⢠Low power consumption - uses about 30% less power than PDPs.

How much would it cost to install a Tv and a xbox in your trunk?

I want to install a 6-12in tv in my trunk, and hook up a xbox into it to play it during mardi gras

Answer
Buy a 15" LED tv (they pull about 30W $80) get an xbox which (draws about 170W) and a power inverter. 400w about $30. There would be no cost to install it, just the price you pay for the parts.

I recently bought the latest Mac mini, and im finding it difficult to connect it to my home theatre system.

My tv is 42 inch LED tv with 3 hdmi source inputs. Right now I have a mini DVI to HDMI input and an HDMI cable. My home theatre system is Philips 5.1 surround that has only 1 HDMI input source. In what way can I connect the Mac mini to the home theatre system?

Cheers

Answer
You're going to need to use the HDMI connection. I don't know if you'll get surround sound out of it though and the Mac Mini only has 3.5mm audio out (and HDMI of course). If you want to make things simple you'll have to spend some more money and get an Apple TV. Then you won't need to have your Mac Mini next to the TV.

I am moving in with my best friend who only has an old, 42 inch television. We are looking for a flat screen tv, preferably LED, must be in the forty inch range and have 1080 resolution. I have found a few tvs like this in the four hundred dollar range, but I know nothing about tvs. What is the best tv fitting these parameters in the four hundred dollar range?

Answer
LG 42LV3500 42-Inch 1080p 60 Hz LED HDTV is replacing my LG 37 in LCD television, my 37 inch was working perfectly but decided to up grade to full HD and the LED model, I have to say the picture color and clarity is stunning to me, minor adjustments were to make the auto picture dimming set to medium, and the usual detailing of the picture but I have all my components linked up via HDMI and I am really impressed, one feature I like is the live scan, with this turned on you can operate the television or the blue ray and the TV knows how and what to change to and back to automatically, pretty cool feature In my estimation you can not go wrong with LG its kind of a thing of either you like there products or not, I have several appliances that are LG and have never had an issue with anything, I am expecting many years of fine television viewing.

I watch a ton of Blu-Rays, HD cable and video games kn mh Samsung 46" LED TV. It is now over a year old. I run it about 4-5 hours a day, backlight set to 7, brightness at 40, contrast at 100, dark levels at darkest. These settings look outstanding with what I watch and play.
Based on these settings, what would the approx. lifespan of my TV be?

Answer
Most tv in the market today are rated at 60,000 to 100,000 hours before they go half it's brightness. This also depends on the brand that you get. Any bargain price tv are not very reliable. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs along with the pro and con of each technology. You will notice that Panasonic dominates the list with a Plasma tv. In November issue of the magazine it named the Panasonic Plasma tv model VT25 as the best tv for 2010. If you read yahoo questions, you will notice that 95% of tv problems comes from LCD tv and 95% of those are the bargain price tv. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. I still have my first Pioneer Plasma tv model 4330 purchased in 2002 and have had no problems (purchase price was $6,400). Hope this will help you out.

Please help me weigh the pros and cons of using an LED TV as a computer monitor?

B.L.T.

Hi! I am about to purchase a pc and i was wondering if using a high def LED TV would be a good alternative as opposed to using a traditional high def LED monitor. In my mind, using a TV for a pc monitor would be a better choice but the more i think about it, something in the back of my mind tells me hat its a case of something being too good to be true. Btw, both the TV and the monitor's brand is the same and the price is almost the same to the point that the difference price wise is negligable for me. Thanks!

Answer
Pros:
-simple to use
-can operate the screen with a remote
-can switch to tv whenever you like
-can use hdmi and most tvs have vga

Negatives:
-May be a bit warmer than actual pc screens
-slight eye strain

These are from experience. You should be fine using a tv as pc monitor

What is the biggest affordable TV that does not cost that much?

Chicago Bl

What's the biggest flat screen TV that I can use at home? I don't want to pay that much for a new big flat screen TV. Please give me some links from either Coscto or Target or Bestbuy that have good affordable TV's.

Answer
How about an actual budget? Affordable to one person might mean $1,000. It could be $2,000 to someone else, and perhaps $3,000 to another person. The word affordable doesn't really mean anything in this situation frankly.

Don't skimp on quality whatever you do. Be willing to go down a size if it means sticking with a higher end brand or a better quality model/series from a given brand. The mid-range models are usually the best bang for the buck. The entry level ones models, even from the top tier brands, can be attractive price wise, but can sometimes lack important features that really impact video and/or audio quality.

Panasonic, Sony, Sharp, Samsung, LG, and Toshiba are all your friends. I would confine your search and eventual purchase to one of those brands. They are all really strong manufacturers. I would recommend avoiding any other brands.

37" or smaller, you really only need a basic HDTV. A CCFL 720p 60Hz LCD will serve you just fine. Paying for the "advanced" features in those sizes doesn't garner much return on the investment (poor bang for the buck since you don't really notice the difference of having those features very much).

40" - 46" is a grey area. Some people like to start going with advanced options like 1080p (Plasma and LCD), 120Hz/240Hz refresh rates (LCD only), LED backlights (LCD only), or going with Plasma (over any form of LCD). Others feel that you can still get a great HD experience with the basic options. I lean towards going advanced feature set, but know people that have gone basic and absolutely love their HD viewing experience. Best way to sort that out for yourself, go into a store and look with your own eyes. See if it makes a difference for you.

50"+ you want advanced features. At that point I would really highly recommend going with a 1080p Plasma.

Check out Amazon.com for prices. They often have some of the best prices/sales all year round. That can give you a good sense of what you should pay for the TV you want. Also, if you can find a store that will price match them, all the better (if you chose to not buy from them).

Some good, what I consider, large sized, and affordable HDTVs,

Panasonic TC-P50G10 - http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIERA-TC-P50G10-50-Inch-Plasma/dp/B001UAEWUS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262283421&sr=8-1 or the slightly updated G15 - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~24260

Panasonic TC-P50S1 - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~26126 - still a great TV, a bit less contrast to the G series, but still a top performer

SHARP AQUOS LC46E77U/UN - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~24089

SONY KDL52V5100 - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~26080

Samsung 46B750 - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~24069

You can find those models around at other places like Best Buy as well. ABC Warehouse though often has some really strong prices so that's why I used them an Amazon for the price quotes above. But those are all solid models.

Sony - stick with V or W series. Those are good mid-range choices that will serve you well in larger sized sets.

Samsung - stick with 650 or 750 series. Those are good mid-range series that will serve you well in larger sizes (The 7 series just adds multimedia features, which if you don't want/need you can save money and stick it out with the 6 series).

LG - stick with the LH40 series. I think that's the best bang for buck series from them. Unless you really need/want more advanced features from the higher series.

Sharp - The 77U series is likely the go to series from them for your needs.

Panasonic - my personal recommendation for larger sized sets; The S and U series offer really good quality TVs for sometimes more "affordable" prices. If you want some of the more advanced image options though look for the G series (look around, with a good sale can sometimes actually be close in price to a S series).

I'm trying to decide between several 65-inch televisions?

led tv versus plasma tv

led tv versus plasma tv image

internetov

I'm trying to decide between several 65-inch televisions: the latest Pioneer plasma, the Samsung LCD, the Sony LCD and the Sharp Aquos. I am leaning towards the plasma based on the reviews but was wondering if there were any strong opinions against it.

Answer
If you restrict yourself to 65-inch class flat panel displays then you currently have a very limited selection: no LED-backlit LCD TVâs and no Pioneer plasma displays.

Plasma display technology is far from being âphased-outâ and at least three major CE manufacturers continue to offer plasma displays: Matsushita (Panasonic), Samsung and LG. Plasma displays consistently remain at or near the top of the performance list from nearly every source of reputable TV reviews (though local-dimming LED-backlit LCD TVâs are beginning to challenge the performance areasâother than viewing angleâwhere emissive displays such as PDPâs have traditionally excelled.)

At this point in time the Panasonic V Series plasma displays offer the best value in terms of initial cost versus overall picture quality, esp. where more than one or two people are expected to be viewing the screen at one time. For me the choice between a CCFL-backlit LCD TV and any of the Samsung PNB850/860 series, Panasonic V series or Pioneer KURO plasma displays is easy - I overwhelmingly prefer the picture quality of plasma; but I also ensure that the room is always dark when viewing movies and certain TV programs.

As good as the latest LED-backlit LCD TVâs are, particularly the top-of-the-line Samsung models, and as good as the Panasonic V10 series are, the Pioneer KURO and Elite KURO plasma TVâs and monitors continue to remain the reference standard against which all top performing consumer displays are being compared.

In the process of choosing a new fixed-pixel flat panel display, irrespective of the display technology, it is very important that you take into consideration the performance of the image and video processing of the flat-panel TVâs in which youâre interested, esp. if you regularly watch standard definition video content such as DVD-Video as well as SD programming from Cable TV, DBS and/or OTA.

One final word of advice: you should make every effort to visit your local dealers and thoroughly and carefully evaluate each of the displays which interest you, preferably under viewing conditions that are (adjusted to be) similar to yours.

What tv is better for gaming with a Xbox 360 a viera or Bravia?

BILL j

Answer
Sony vs Panasonic, there is no better choice in brand. When you are dealing with the high end manufactures, there is no purely better brand. You need to dig deeper into model numbers. Compare specific models, then you can find a better choice. Use something like cnet.com to get started.

Size matters a lot too. In 37" or smaller, you don't need to get hung up on the "high end" tech specs. So you're good with 720p (vs 1080p), you're good with 60Hz (vs 120Hz), you're good with CCFL (vs LED), and you're good with LCD (vs Plasma). If you break 40", and moreso if you break 50", then you need to start looking at those other options.

I personally prefer the color and blacks of Panasonic LCDs versus Sony LCDs. But that doesn't make it better for gaming, its totally personal preference. That has to weigh into your decision too. So whatever you do, make sure you go into a store and look at the sets. Use the suggestions you get, the tech specs you see, and the Internet reviews to help you narrow the choice. Then lay your eyes on the TV sets and pick the on your eyes like. Its your money, your viewing experience, so at some point you need to throw everyone else's opinion out the window.

If you do break 40" I would suggest Plasma personally. It will just look better. And in that case you want to go Viera. Panasonic is the leader in Plasma with Pioneer leaving the market, and Sony doesn't make Plasma. If you want a Plasma vs LCD breakdown, just search this forum, or you can msg me and I can give you my reasoning in more detail.

A Plasma from Panasonic or Samsung won't have burn-in issue. They are elite options. And they both have sets with anti-image retention features (just read the specs). The Plasma burn-in issue is now a myth/misconception.

how can i take led tv to india from usa?

best led tv 55 inch

best led tv 55 inch image
Q. I bought 55 inches LED TV recently. I would like to take it to India with me(planning to travel to india). Please suggest me the best way to carry it. Is it better to ship or will airlines allow me to carry this tv with me instead of one bag? How much does they charge in airlines and how much does they take if I ship? Answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
A bigger problem is the incompatibility of your set with the TV broadcast system in India. India uses the PAL system. North America uses the ATSC/NTSC system. Your TV won't receive local channels in India.

Also, the voltage mains there are 240v/50 hz. Your TV *might* be optionable for that voltage and line frequency--check your owner's guide. But as equipped for the U.S. market, it's set up for 110v/60 hz.

You might be better off returning your set for a refund if possible, and buying one locally in India. That also saves you the hassle and cost of transport, customs, etc.

Would you consider the Samsung UN55D6900 to be a TV worthy of spending $ on calibration?

ktrio730

I just bought this tv from Best Buy as a floor model and heavily discounted for $670. I got the 55 inch one. I feel great about the purchase, especially at that price, since I looked elsewhere, and even now, these sets are selling for upwards of $1300-1500.

Anyways, my main question is this...

Is this set calibration worthy? I want to get it calibrated but have read that on some basic sets, it's not even worth it since there is very limited options to tweak.
Is this one of those types of sets or is it considered a mid-high end LED tv?

Answer
Check the owner's manual for the procedure to reset the TV to its factory defaults, then do it. You shouldn't need to pay for anything, and the default settings should give you a great picture from any source. If you want, you can tweek any of the optional adjustments a little to see what you get. If you make a mess of it, you can always reset the defaults and start over.

How to wire an LED Light Strip?

I am buying an LED Light strip from eBay for the back of my TV to give off a red glow, but the lights are loose wires and I am not sure how to hook it up to a lamp switch or something similar. COuld someone please explain or tell me where I can find a tutorial.

Thanks!

PS. I live in Canada if that matters

Answer
It is rather simple. I'm guessing you have an led strip that is very similar to this:

http://lighthouseleds.com/12v-flexible-led-strips/12v-3528-led-strip-flexible.html

If so, then you can simply find a small transformer like this (you are in Canada, so you power outlets are different than in the US, so make sure you find one that will fit your outlets):

http://lighthouseleds.com/tools-accessories/power-supplies/12v-power-supplies/wall-outlet-12v-supply-ac-to-dc.html

Once you do that, go to an electronics store and buy a simple SPST switch (single pole, single throw) and put this switch in line with the power line (series). This way when the switch is turned it will break the circuit and when it is flipped the other way it will turn on.

Can a power inverter run a home theater system with 3 speakers for a tailgater?

so im trying to set up a sony home theater system to run off a power inverter plugged into my car.
the reason is for a tailgater and we want a little more noise then car speakers. so is it possible to use a car power inverter to run a receiver that has 3 speakers plugged into it? if so what size inverter will I need and what problems might I run into? thanks for your time I WILL SELECT BEST ANSWER

Answer
I would just get a Honda EU series inverter generator or one of its many Chinese clones.

For a 12v inverter you need one that is:

A. True/pure sine wave output not modified sine or modified square.
B. Twice the wattage of the sound system plus the wattage of the other stuff.
C. Hard wired to some deep cycle batteries unless you plan to run the vehicle engine the whole time.

In my case be would be Onkyo TX-SR608 100 watts x3 speakers x2 is 600 Add my small powered sub it is 700 (50x2) then add my Blu-Ray player and TV and it is 750 (My LCD TV is an LED edgelit 26" and maxes out at 52 watts with the backlight cranked and is half that at normal levels), so I would need a 750 watt or larger inverter.

The 2x size is so that the varying draw of the sound system doesn't cause too much voltage fluctuation and make the Blu-Ray or TV go nuts.

Edit: to know for sure buy a Kill-A-Watt meter and measure the actual consumption of your devices at the volume level you will have it set to and double that for the inverter size.

The KAW meter is how I know the exact draw of my TV ETC.

Need a hdtv with a glossy screen finish or a darker glass finish, please help?

best led tv with matte screen image

John Thomp

I am looking for a hdtv that is preferrably still available in store now that has the following key features in them:

I want the tv to have a glossy screen finish rather than a matte screen finish. It would be great if it was a glass finish but as long as it is a glossy finish and the key is that I am able to see my reflection in the tv. Now the problem is that with the plasma tv's the screen is glossy and everything but the screen itself it like a light grey glass. I preferr a a little darker screen finish but still be able to see my reflection in it. The whole idea is that I want the colors to be popping out and the colors to be vivid and intense exactly like how it used to be with my old CRT TV. Something like the glass like finish of the Dell Laptop would be nice.

I noticed with the plasma tvs is that it isn't too bright the picture. I prefer a very vivid and vibrant picture with the colors popping out. The problem with LCD TV's is that the picture has like a cloud like cover because it is a matte finish on most of the LCD Tvs. A lot of the LED TV's are not that great either. However what I am looking for again is a tv with a gloss screen or a glass screen finish the glass has to be a bit darker than say the panasonic plasma tv's so that I can be sure to be able to see my reflection in it and for the colors to be popping out and vibrant and hopefully no cloud cover like the LCD TV's. Can you please give me an exact model name and number and where in the local stores can I find this tv on display. I must have tried like 10 to 12 hdtvs in the past 2 years and none of them so far have met all my needs. Hopefully there is still a tv out there that will satisfy me all the way. Let me know the details. Thanks
Hi LG sherman, the thing is I want it to be very glossy with a glass like finish not a matte finish at all and another thing I don't want 3d or the internet. That is not important. What's important is the glass like finish and the tv to be reflective and the type of screen to be a little darker than the panasonic plasma tv. Another thing is I want the colors to be popping out without being covered by a cloud. Thanks.

Answer
Hello, John Thomponian! LG WRman Sherlock here!

The LG LM series TVs come with a semi-matte finish on the screens. They are definitely reflective, but not by much. In addition, the LM series TVs are all LED TVs with IPS panels, so you will definitely get a bright, vivid picture. Definitely check them out the next time you go looking at TVs!

The LM series consist of the LM6200, LM6400, LM6700, LM7600, LM8600, and LM9600.

LG WRman Sherlock, out!

Is there a big difference between matte and glossy screens?

Bacon

The laptop that I want only comes in matte.
My old desktop and college laptops are in matte and the quality is just terrible when compared to my glossy 15" laptop or 40" LED TV.

I can barely look at them, I get eye strain and feel depressed.. which is somewhat strange...

I'm unsure if it's because my desktop is a few years older and the screens on the laptops have bad graphics cards or perhaps they have damage-resistant layers?

Anyway, could you tell me just how different matte is from glossy.
I get 0 reflections on my current glossy screen as my lamp and lights in the house all have shades. In my bedroom the windows face the back of my laptop, hence no glare.

Thank you

Answer
Hi troll,

Glossy screens have vibrant colors and high contrast and brightness because they have a smooth, high-gloss surface. Glossy screens use optical coating to reduce the amount of reflected external light. Their shiny surfaces reflect more light than matte displays. In controlled environments, such as darkened rooms, or rooms where all light sources are diffused, a glossy display may be more enjoyable for the viewer.

Matte screens have anti-glare finish, to scatter the reflected light. Matte screens diffuse light instead of reflecting it so they might be easier to read outdoors, if the backlight provides enough brightness. This characteristic, however, has a number of side effects, which include scattering the light from the display and increasing the blur. Additionally, it results in reduction of the contrast ratio, color intensity, and viewing angle.

Hope the information is useful to you.

Thanks and Regards

What is the currently best TV on the market for sports and gaming?

Peter

Hey,

What is to today's date the best TV on the current market for watching sports and gaming PS3?

I want the best picture quality available, it doesn't matter whether it's a SmartTV or not, LCD, LED or plasma. Price is not a factor.

I was looking at either the new sony 4k TV, or the Samsung 75 SmartTV. But are there any better out there? And which of these two is the best?

PS: The bigger the screen the better. Thanks!

Answer
If you want the absolute best picture quality available right now either to with a sharp elite. Very expensive though. Or get a panasonic vt-50 plasma. However if you wait a few more months they are releasing OLED and 4k televisions that will basically be the best thing to ever touch home theater. Also panasonic is real easing the beyond reference plasmas which add a red phosphorous which makes your picture even better than the vt-50

How long do you think it will take for the price of OLED TV to come down?

Trinidad

I heard that the price of OLED TV will come down after some time. Normal people like us can only wait for that time in order to afford it.

Answer
I don't agree with people predicting 5 to 10 years for OLED to come down to the price of a really good LCD or Plasma TV. Yes the first flat panel TVs were crazy expensive. The price of the first sets in 1997-98 were in 10k, 20k, just insane, and the image quality was horrid, and they weren't even HD. By 2005 or so, a really good plasma TV was about 3-4k give or take. That was only 7 years later.

Just 3 years ago, I kept reading that the first mass market OLEDs would be small, and very expensive. I also read that large sizes would be difficult to make. Sony made one for 2k but it was tiny, and not mass market. Now LG and Samsung announce that they are launching OLED, and it will drop in 2012, and it will be 55 inches. Also rumors keep floating around of a 10 thousand US dollar price point.

We all know everything gets better and cheaper, but everyone also forgets the faster part. If OLED launches this year, it will only take 3 years, 4 max for OLED to cost what a top notch LCD or Plasma TV does today. TV makers will stick to larger sizes to command higher prices and profit margins, but they cannot do it forever. by 2016 LCD and Plasma tech will be on the way out.

By 2020 I cannot imagine LCD would even exist, maybe only for rock bottom, budget stuff. Plasma could still be a niche market for those that might not like the 'look' of OLED. But let's be honest, plasma could be dead, and another new tech like Sony's crystal LED could be floating around.

I have them connected through hdmi and i would really like to know 2 things 1. how can i get the best possible picture through dvd. and 2. my surround sound only works with dvds how can i connect it to work with the cable tv aswell

Answer
In order to get surround sound through cable TV you will need a digital cable box as only digital cable is encoded with surround sound. Also it will vary depending if the channel broadcasts surround sound and if the show is available in surround sound. DVD's will have surround sound but the picture will just be up-scaled only Blu-ray has true HD picture.

Answer
To get the best possible picture first is to make sure you have all your gear hooked up with the best cables possible. Then is to have your TV professionally calibrated by a certified ISF technician. They have very expensive test gear and can get into hidden menus that only service technicians are able to get into. They also calibrate each input for the source being used. Its reasonably expensive to have done but when you think how long you have TV's and how often you view it its really not that bad.

There are other stores that offer similar calibrations I would strongly suggest against it, only go with true ISF certified technicians. You can find one on their web site.

The cheaper option is to buy their video essentials calibration disc which is very informative and will help you get reasonably close with a little patience and practice.

Good luck

Right now I am using Samsungâs 32â LED TV and enough satisfied with its performance. Know why should I go for oled TV if I have to choose one? When even it also cost a lot high than led TV.

Answer
Because there are many advantages of OLED TVs as compared to LED TV, like low power consumption, better contrast ratio, wide viewing angle, very fast response, no back light needed, thinner, lighter, and can display deep black levels. Of course it is expensive at present because it is the latest tech. in the market in the field of TV display and hope the price will go down very soon.

How long does it take for an LED TV to get a ghost image burnt into the screen?

We bought a 56" Samsung Touch of Color LED TV a few days ago and I've been enjoying MW2 on it alot. But now my step dad is saying that I should limit my playing time on it because the game's stationary HUD might burn into the screen. I only play for about 2 hours a day and so does my sister, so there's about 4 hours of playing time a day. Is this enough to damage the screen?

Answer
Theoretically, no LCD TV (which is what yours actually is) will have a burn-in problem. That's a characteristic of older plasma TVs. LCDs with LED backlighting are the latest and the greatest, so there is very little likelihood that they'll ever suffer a burn-in problem.

J

Will that work as a monitor? What tv brand should I get?

Answer
Yes. Virtually every LCD monitor and TV has a vga input connection. If you want better video, you may need to add a video card with DVI-out for a digital connection. Look for 120hz, 1080p, and LED. LG, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and Panasonic are all very good. Element, Viore, and Vizio are budget-level displays, but are usually a couple hundred dollars less than the others with the same exact specifications, just uglier on the bezel.

For what purpose is this White OLED used?

Guadalupe

There was this news about LG using this new color in the production of their OLED TV. Why are they using this new color which none of the other TV manufacturers are using?

Answer
Was the story about white pixels or white OLEDs?

LG and Samsung are the only TV makers that have said they will ship large OLED TVs in 2012.

They will do this using slightly different methods. In Samsung's version, it's just a pure OLED TV. Each sub pixel red, blue, and green will create or emit their own colored light. There is a downside, and it's why OLED was delayed a few years.

The organic material that make up the blue pixel breaks down faster than the other colors. While the color shift isn't a huge problem if it takes place over a large period of time, it's a problem if the rate is different from the other colors.

When that happens, it means the set will need to be calibrated more often, and there's the risk the color shift in the blue pixel will be so great, that it cannot be corrected. If samsung is launching with a true OLED panel, they must feel confident that they've solved the issue.

LG took a different route. Their panels use white OLEDs. Then they place colored filters over the white OLEDs. It's what all LCD/LED use since the backlight is white, the liquid crystal control light level, and the filters give the color.

Samsung claims their traditional version will yield a wider color gamut, and overall better image quality. They call their version super OLED.

Now if you are talking about white pixels, that's another story. White pixels can be used in a LCD or even an OLED TV. The advantage is a brighter image. Sony is using a new white pixel in a new small LCD screen, I think it was for a phone. It's not OLED tech, it's just added to the color filter. So there's a red, blue, green and white sub pixel.

Can using a computer as input damage a TV?

Dean

I got a new TV and hooked it up to my computer for about 90 minutes. After that it died. Is it possible that the computer that was using it as a display could cause damage to it, or did I probably just get a bad TV that was basically DOA? I'm really worried about ever trying that again now. I've seen a lot of stuff about doing that with TVs and I did it with my old tube TVs before, but I just don't know what to think about these LCD/LED TVs (this is the first one I've really used much). Is my paranoia justified or should it be impossible for my computer/video card to break a television?

Answer
Depends on the model, probably.

Some LCD TVs have a VGA input that allows the TV to double as a monitor. It is also possible that some models can be damaged by displaying a static image (such as the taskbar/dock at the bottom) for too long, or if the video card sends a display rate or video dimensions that the TV cannot handle.

I'm inclined to think your TV simply was a lemon and should be returned for warranty replacement.

I used to be fairly aware of what an LCD television's pros/cons were compared to a plasma but these new super flat LED televisions seem to be the best of both worlds. Can someone out there explain to me the pros/cons of the LED tvs compared to LCD/plasma? Thanks!

Answer
LED TV Technology Pros and Cons
by Robert Wiley

PROS

The viewing angle on LCD Televisions with LED back lighting has improved dramatically to plasma-like levels of 75 degrees with no contrast level degradation on some of the best ones.
The black levels on the best new LED TVs has improved to plasma like black levels while contrast levels still lag the best plasmas buy hundreds of post calibration points
Brightness on LED based LCDs is better than the traditional flourescent bulbs
LED TVs will have better consistency of color information over time than traditional LCDs
LED backlit Televisions should in theory have a better lifespan than traditional LCD TVs or plasmas.
CONS
LED TVs with local dimming use more energy than traditional LCDs. It's not much, about 100W for a particular size range.
LED Televisions with discreet backlighting can have lots of dimensional depth to the cabinet. We recently reviewed one with a 6" depth to the cabinet â making it less wall mount friendly.
LED TVs are quite a bit more expensive than traditional LCD TVs. See our article titled "LED TV â Is it worth it?" or our "LED vs LCD" coverage.

What is the average lifespan of an LED TV viewed under the following settings?

Sarah C
