I want to buy a new tv next month, but I don't know which company to pick. I want a Samsung or a Sony. I'm looking for a 55" screen and a set with 120HZ or 240HZ processing. Anyone know a good model? Thanks!

What LED or LCD TV is good for gaming?

JMukasa

Hi,
Currently in the market for a 30-39 inch TV for my bedroom, with the viewing distance being 10 feet from my bed and a $250-$500 budget. I will be using it for movies, watching sports, gaming (with the new ps4, new xbox and my GFs xbox 360..the lower the input lag the better). I am thinking about a 1080p? I am hoping to keep this TV for a long time, since me and my GF are getting a place together next year. Does anybody know if Samsung TVs are good? LG? Those two brands caught my interest at BestBuy. I am also interested in the whole Smart TV thing but it isn't a must have me just a bonus. Please feel free to drop your 2 cents I am new to this whole TV thing

Found these 4 on Best Buy:

Samsung - 32" Class (31-1/2" Diag.) - LED - 1080p - 60Hz - HDTV
Model: UN32EH5000FXZA

Samsung - 37" Class (37" Diag.) - LED - 1080p - 60Hz - HDTV
Model: UN37EH5000FXZA

LG - 39" Class (38-1/2" Diag.) - LED - 1080p - 60Hz - Smart - HDTV
Model: 39LN5700

Samsung - 32" Class (31-1/2" Diag.) - LED - 1080p - 60Hz - Smart - HDTV

Answer
(Boy am I glad you asked before buying)

Those models are all bad for gaming.

You have 2 problems:

LCD panels have motion blur with fast moving objects. To reduce the problem, the better models offer "120 hz" refresh which cuts the problem in half. All your selections are only 60 hz so you are guaranteed to have motion blur.

You have decided on a 1080 panel because it must be 'better' - right? In truth you cannot see a difference in the picture on a 720 vs 1080 panel if the sizes are below about 40 inches.

The recommended seating distance for a 39" display is 4.4 feet according to the THX rules, but you are sitting 10 feet away?

Your girl's xbox has games formatted for a 720 display so the television will have to take time to up-convert every frame of video to 1080. This can take a sizable amount of time and create an effect called "Gamer Lag".

BASICALLY: All the models you have selected will be HORRIBLE for what you want to do and how far away you are sitting.

You want a Plasma display to eliminate motion blur.
You want a 720 panel to reduce gamer lag.
You want a name brand because they tend to use faster electronics which can also reduce gamer lag.

Look for a non-smart Plasma by Panasonic or Samsung.

SMART TELEVISION

The higher end Samsung models do a good job with their smart apps. For everything else - one of the small external media servers like the Western Digital TV Live box ($90) or the Roku box ($60) give you more apps, get better support and work a lot better than the 'smart' televisions or bluray players.

Save money by looking for the non-smart models, then add a WD box later for streaming.

Hope this helps.
