Can anyone offer advice on buying a LED tv?

AA

Hey all

I'm looking to by a new tv. Only specs I am 100% on are

Size: has to be 46 inch
Type: LED
Freq: 100hz or greater
Price: £700-1000

I've been looking around and the Samsung ue46d5000 seems to be the perfect choice but there seems to be very few reviews about.

I'm upgrading from a 40'' Sony, 1080p LCD, 50'' (Kdl40w2000). I'm guessing an upgrade based on the new specs i'm looking for will be worthwhile?

Would love some advice!

On another note, I did notice some 400hz tv's. Is that mainly for 3D or does it make a big difference in movies and games compared to 100hz?

Thanks in advance

Adam

Answer
I wouldnt buy a LED or 3D tv right now.

Plasma all the way-Only thing Plasma Starts at 42" and goes up
better and deeper blacks
wider off angle viewing
awesome for fast motion-600Hz refresh rate while the top LCDs/LEDs are only 240Hz(also LCDs use whats called interpolation so to play games with out lag you will have to turn the tv to 60Hz)-Best for gaming and sports watching
No burn in-on new plasmas-was a problem 5 years ago
they do use more power than the LCDs-But really if you cant afford the possible 3-5 bucks a month in and increase in your power bill-You do not need to be buying a big tv to begin with.
The short life people are talking about equals about 10-15 years of watching. really who wont buy a new tv in 10 freaking years???

Right now the top Plasmas are made by Panasonic(according to Cnet, consumer reports and a few home video mags). Right now 50" 1080p ( i own this one and the 65" version) at best buy USA around 899 for the 50" 720p is 599

LED tvs are just a LCD with a LED back light instead of Florissant tubes!!!!!!!!!!
LED tvs ARE JUST LCD with different backlighting they still suffer all the drawbacks of LCD but are just brighter

Is there a noticable quality difference in an lcd led tv?

is there a real difference between an lcd and a led lcd tv

Answer
Consumer Reports testing indicated the LED sets with full matrix backlighting and local dimming capability produced varying degrees of enhanced black levels and contrast. They also said that a set with poor local dimming can cause undesired effects in the picture that non-LED TVs don't have. The one full matrix LED they liked a lot was the Samsung UN46B8500.

Another difference: LED sets use less power than a set with fluorescent backlighting.

With edge-lit LED backlighting, the biggest difference you see appears to be the fact that the TV is very thin.

My impression: if you have a good LCD with fluorescent backlighting now and are happy with the picture, the extra cost of an LED-equipped set won't get you anything significantly better than what you already have.

LCD or LED----------------------?

carey_ball

Which is best for a new TV?

Answer
The only advantage of the older LCD sets over "LED" is that they are usually a lot cheaper. Some LCD sets have excellent picture quality, as good or better than many LED sets, as demonstrated in Consumer Reports lab testing. But in general, the "LED" set is preferable because it is less prone to repair issues--it doesn't have the fluorescent lamp that will eventually burn out, or the inverter board that is the source of frequent LCD TV failures.

With all other specifications being equal, I'd opt for the "LED" set for that reason alone, even if it costs a little more.

What is the best led tv?

Answer
I would recommend looking at reviews on Newegg.com or pick up a consumer reports magazine.

I want to buy a 50 inch plasma tv. I need to know if the LED or the LCD is better?

Answer
You have a couple of confusion factors there.

One, a plasma TV is neither LCD nor LED. It's plasma.

Two, an "LED" TV is nothing more than an LCD TV with a more modern form of backlighting. Both have an LCD display screen. The older backlighting is a fluorescent lamp.

I could give you a long list of pros and cons on each, but all new sets sold today will give you a fine picture; it's just a matter of what looks best to you in the store and what you can afford.

By any chance, do you have or can you get the current issue of Consumer Reports magazine (December 2010)? There's an in-depth article that answers your questions plus many that you didn't ask, and it has lab-tested ratings on sets of all types.

Way past time to bring back the Fairness Doctrine in TV and Radio?

healing wi

When Reagan destroyed the Fairness Doctrine, it led to the present day divisiveness. It is time to bring back fair and honest reporting from both sides, so that consumers can make informed and uncoerced decisions.

Answer
Divisiveness is a good thing in a Republic. It means the government is not control of thought and speech. Have you ever read the Constitution or Bill of Rights?

Amendment 1

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

What part of "Congress shall make no law" do you not understand?

How come WOW CABLE refuse to offer their service anywhere that has a large black/African American population or anywhere that has a large Hispanic/Latino population.

WOW CABLE is currently not available at my house in Inkster, Michigan near DETROIT because WOW CABLE refuse to offer there service anywhere that has a large black/African American population or anywhere that has a large Hispanic/Latino population.

WOW! (formerly WideOpenWest), is the 15th largest cable provider in the United States. It has been given accolades by Consumer Reports as the top Television and internet provider in its 2009 telecom survey.

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 gave way for more competition to enter the cable TV market. Encouraged by this law a number of investors, led by local telephone companies, established competitive broadcast cable services in markets across the country. These entities became known in the industry as 'cable overbuilders,' meaning they would build new cable infrastructure into areas where there were existing cable systems.

WOW! was founded in November 1999 in Denver, Colorado. After completing a network build in April 2001, WOW! initially served about 200 people in the Denver area. In November 2001, Americast, an overbuild system in the Midwest built and operated by Ameritech New Media, Inc., was purchased by WOW! for an undisclosed amount per subscriber, estimated to have been at a cost of $1,000 per sub. This purchase opened WOW! to over 310,000 new customers in metropolitan areas surrounding the cities of Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Denver, and Evansville. WOW! no longer serves the Denver market.

In April 2012, WOW! purchased Knology, a broadband company, operating in 13 markets. With the merger the combined customer total will be over 800,000.

WOW! is privately owned with Avista Capital Partners having a majority stake.

WOW CABLE refuse to offer their service to black people and Mexicans. :-(
WOW Detroit - Cable (Plymouth) - **** them that cable provider don't like black people. The NAACP needs to know about WOW CABLE.

Answer
Most cable companies are franchised & only allowed to service specific areas.
Your local govt. decided on which cable franchise would service which areas to allow free competition or better yet not have one company better known as a monopoly.

Why do the Samsung LED TVs have such a limited viewing angle as far as contrast goes?

OKwithme

Is there any way to fix the fact that the image looks washed out when you step to the sides or on top of the TV?

Answer
Limited viewing angle is one of the main problems with Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) type HDTV's (and LCD's in general - even computer monitors). It is one of the reasons why I bought a plasma display instead of LCD. You can't do anything about it except possibly angle the set for the best possible display for the majority of the area. Nothing you do will be more than a compromise though.

Here is an article from Consumer Reports about LCD viewing angles...
