TV HELP! I have no clue about TV's and I'm going to be buying one.?

allylav

My sister has a TV that burns if its left on a certain image for to long. I forget what its called but I defiantly don't want that kind. I'm looking into something around 50". Not sure what brand yet but something like samsung or HP or Toshiba sounds good. (got any better?) I'm not looking for any crazy extras I just want at least two places available for me to attach my PS3 and DVD player. I'm looking for it in a black. I'm going to be hanging it on a wall.

I'm pretty much just asking what would be a best choice for someone who wants an old fashion(figuratively) flat screen TV. That doesn't have any of the neat 3D effects :P or any grand bullsh!t. If you don't have any specifics just give a hypothetical TV that I should look for.

Give whatever info you can.

Thanks alot! :D

Answer
I've looked at all kinds of TVs and own the four major types (DLP, Plasma, LED, LCD)...I haven't seen any of the obscure stuff like LCoS or Laser.

I use four brands, which are Panasonic (Plasma), Samsung (LCD), Sony (LED), and Mitsubishi (DLP).

I can say the Panasonic Plasma is probably the best value for your money. You won't get any blown pixels (LCD), motion 'blocking' (LED) and it should last a good long time.

You WILL need a solid HDMI input (like a monster) with a lot of shielding -- I like the 1000 but you can get away with an 800, especially if you plan on watching Blu-Ray. This also helps a BIT with motion 'blocking.'

You CAN get a 3D one for about 3 grand, but you can get a 50-inch that's black and wall-mountable (they all are with a kit), for about half that, or less online.

Good luck!

LCD, LED or Plasma for gaming?

me123

We're getting a new tv soon (it's going into the room with the PS3), and it's going to be 40-42". For gaming, should we get a Plasma, LED or LCD? LCD seem the cheapest for the best reviews, and I can't find any decent plasmas on amazon that aren't over 500 quid. LED seems too expensive.

I suppose my real question is: Is a 50 Hz 40 inch LCD which has a cheap price but GREAT reviews worth getting for gaming?

Thanks

Answer
if you use LED you will have the best gaming experience, but it is not worth it, bc now is coming out O-LED, that is flexible LED, so the LED price will drop ;D
so i would get a 1080i projector, bc it is a 1080, you can take it anywhere and it can project up to 300"
its a better deal i think...
if you cant afford it, get a 100 hz LCD bc now PS3 has 3D
ps: if you have a 100hz tv, you can use nVidia's 3D kit on your pc too

Ways to trick out my LCD TV/Xbox 360 Set up?

Cheese

I just bought a modded 360 controller w/ blue leds and rapid fire. The things people can do are so cool...

Has anyone every tricked out your gamming room w/ lights that flash with the sound or so other crazy effects??? id love to know!!

Things i can buy on ebay maybe!!!

Answer
If you have Rockband, the Stage Kit is the ultimate set up. Comes with a smoke machine, strobe lights and LED lights including red, blue, green and yellow, all synchronized with the game. Makes patterns on the wall and lasers through the smoke.

A cheap way to make lights blink with the games is to take a chrismas light and snip it out of a chain of old lights, preferably ones that aren't being used anymore. If you snip it out right you should have 2 wires extending from the light. Make sure you have about 2 inches of each wire. Strip the ends to expose the copper then on the back of the speaker place one end in each the red and black inserts. The bass or loudness will trigger the light, it's pretty cool. Another way of doing it is making the current of the positive OR the negative run through the light. You can repeat this process with every speaker.

i know you should use a micro fiber cloth or whatever theyre called (i have one) i was just wondering what liquid cleaner i should use. I heard that there are certain cleaners that permanently smudge or darken the screen so i want to be careful. i also heard there might be different cleaners depending on whether the tv is LED or LCD. thanks for any help you can give

Answer
The 'smudging' is because someone uses strong ammonia-based cleaner and it dissolves the anti-glare coating or hazes the plastic protector screen.

The little $10 Monster screen cleaning kits are probably your best bet.

You can make your own cleaner with grocery store alcohol and distilled water. You want a 50:50 ratio of the alcohol (so if your rubbing alcohol is 70% solution you use more water). Spritz the screen while it is cold and let it sit for a minute to work (because this is a weak solution), the gently wipe with the cloth. Do not rub at a spot but re-spray, wait, wipe.

The guys at Revision3 have a show on making your own screen cleaner if you want to see it.

Help getting my surround sound to work?

Cody T

I bought an LG Smart 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System (BH6830SW). I also bought an Insignia LED TV with your standard inputs and stuff. I have COX cable service as well and I cannot get all the speakers to work at the same time. I'm currently using the red/white audio connectors. Should I use an optical cable? Is that even possible for this setup? Should I go directly from the cable box to the Surround Sound?

I really appreciate any help with this, I'm horrible at this stuff.

Answer
I just had a quick look at the manual & the LG system does seem pretty basic. There are 3 ways to get audio from the TV, in order of preference they are:

HDMI-ARC (supports up to 7.1 digital depending on product & program)
This requires you to switch on ARC in the LG Simplink setup menu & allows the TV Audio to travel back down the same HDMI cable between the TV & LG system. Only TV's manufactured within the last 5 years are likely to support this & only one of the HDMI sockets on the TV will work with ARC. If you're lucky they will have printed ARC next to the input label (e.g. HDMI2-ARC). ARC also needs to be enabled on the TV but this is usually switched on by default. This should also carry audio from any other units connected to the TV providing they are connected ti the TV correctly. If the audio from your COX cabe box works on the TV speakers it should also work via the ARC connection.

Optical (supports up to 7.1 digital depending on product & program)
Pretty simple, plug one end in the TV & the other in the LG. Switch to the optical input on the LG.

Analogue Audio <Red & White plugs> (supports mono or stereo analogue)
Pug one end into the audio output on the TV (not input) & the other ed into the input on the LG. Swiitch to the Auxiliary Line input on the LG.

In terms of surround sound a decent system should do the following:
5.1 & 7.1 Digital Audio - Full Digital surround sound
2 channel analogue or digital - stereo or optional analogue surround such as Pro-Logic
Mono Audio - Mono (1 speaker) or Expanded Mono (all speakers)

Unfortunately the previous responder is correct that many cheap surround sound BluRay kits will only offer surround sound from the on board bluray player. This is a bit crap but as the manual makes no reference to listeing to external sources in surround sound you may be stuffed on this one. As they have not bothered to confirm this anywhere in the manual you may want to contact LG directly for a definite answer.

Also bare in mind that many TV services are still mono & most are only stereo. Only an exceptional few HD channels will offer 5.1, but then a proper surround unit would use Pro-Logic to create surround sound from stereo channels!
