Optimal Settings for Vizio M221NV LED Tv?

Nick

I bought the above mentioned model and I hooked it up at home to my Directv reciever and the picture is blurry as could be. Ive also noticed these blackish white lines flickering at the very top of the playing picture. I know Im using a standard def directv receiver, but im sure theres a way to make the quality better. Any help?

Hey, Nick,

It sounds like you're connecting your Vizio to your box by way of the DTV/TV/Cable/Anetnna (screw-on) type connector (aka: 75ohm.) OR... maybe you're connecting via the AV (Red, White, and Yellow) connectors. Either way, they're not the best ways to go. Ideally, you'll want to connect your TV to your DirecTV receiver by way of the HDMI ports (which, if you have an SD box, you don't have.)

Those flickering black and white lines are there on just about all SD Video. The reason you don't see it on those old tube TVs is because (I'm being totally serious here:) the plastic "frame" that surrounds the picture tube covers it. (The "frame" is called a bezel, and it's there not only to make your TV look good, but also to hide a lot of those extra [garbaby] elements of the picture.) Broadcasters include a lot of those lines (tops, bottoms, sides too) to include things like closed captioning and sync info... but I digress. Because those tube TVs were analog, a little shifting left, right, up, or down was to be expected (and allowed,) so they increased the bezel size to cover it. Generally speaking, there are about 22 lines of "junk" at the tops and bottoms of an SD signal that you can't see, but those lines can be more or less depending on the calibration of the TV, the TV's health, or the brightness of the signal.

(TV's Health?! Yes! TVs have power supplies which contain capacitors. These capacitors are electronic components which contain [among other things] a liquid. As TVs age, these capacitors start to dry out, making them less efficient. Then, before you know it, a VERY bright picture causes the image to MAGNIFY just a little bit, but enough such that your 22 invisible lines at the tops and bottom swell to 30 lines [effectively making your screen image larger!]])

Crazy, huh?

Ok. So how does 1940s technology affect you? :)

With your newfangled HD set, all of those pixels are individually addressed. The pixel (the picture element which makes up a frame of video) which is at the top left corner of the screen is pixel 0,0, the one to its right is 1,0, etc... Now, all of a sudden EVERY line in the picture (including those "garbagy" lines at the top and bottom) are seen on your monitor!

Nasty, right?

So what can you do about it?

Not much, I'm affraid. The blurryness likely has to do with the cable you're using to connect your box and TV. Give it a shake, and see if the TV image doesn't get a little noisy. If it does, then it could mean bad connections on either the box or TV end of the wire(s), or bad connectors on the DirecTV box or TV themselves. If that's the case, use a different wire.

Another tip is to make sure your video cable is as shielded as possible (that's the yellow cable if you're using the 3 cable setup.) Also, try to run the yellow cable along a different path from any other cables, ESPECIALLY power cables!

You might also consider REDUCING THE LENGTH OF CABLE you use to connect the box and the TV. (Longer cables = more dropout.)

Best scenario? Upgrade your box. You bought a good HD TV; you should enjoy the best HD content.

Other than that, there aren't any settings on either the TV or the DirecTV receiver box to improve the image quality. Sorry.

Hope that helps!

Samsung LED Tv or Sony bravia W series ?

Mahmood H

I want to buy a tv but i don't know samsung LED tv is better or Sony Bravia w Series ?

Answer
LED Tv ( LCD display use LED as back-light ) is New LCD Display Technology !
They can produce a very bright image with greater contrast and deeper blacks compared to LCD TVs.
With Edge-LED lighting they can be extremely slim. Current models on the market are just over 1 inch thick.
They consume much less power. About 40% less compared to an LCD TV of a similar size.
They can offer a wider colour gamut, especially when RGB-LED backlighting is used
LCD TV Quality is close to Plasma Display.
Prices for LED TV is 3 to 4 X high compare to same size LCD TV.
Sony W Series is LCD TV . it cant compare to LED tv . and is not fair to compare.
Samsung LED TV of course is High Quality TV !
Sony Zx and X series is LED TV., it always same class / quality compare to Samsung LED TV.
