Disregard the other answers and buy the F8500 Plasma. The F8500 plasma is the best looking tv Samsung has every made (I am referring to both picture quality and aesthetics). The picture quality is absolutely superb! No this tv is not bulky which anybody who has actually SEEN the tv would know. It has a picture quality that goes up and beyond what the Sony W900A can although the W900A is the best LED this year. Black levels are also much richer on the Samsung plasma than on the W900A, and the colors are nothing if not completely accurate. It is also very bright for a plasma. While the F8500 is (without a doubt) the best tv Samsung has ever made (that says a lot), the Sony W900A is nowhere near the best tv Sony has ever made albeit the best LED this year.
For movies, sports, and pretty much anything, the Samsung will look much nicer than it LED competition. Even the smarts on the Samsung are a lot easier and visually intuitive than Sony's. The only reason I would recommend the Sony over the Samsung would be if the tv is going in an extremely bright room and you never watch movies or watch tv at night. Yes, plasmas still do generally pull more electricity than LEDs but they're all energy rated. Plasmas are no longer the bulky beasts they once were and are often times as thin or thinner than competing LEDs in the same price point. Don't be dumb. This is a clear choice. Pick the Samsung. Sony LCD TV or LED TV?

I do know the difference between the two (backlighting)
Sony kdl-46w5810 vs sony kdl-46ex703
The LCD is £800 and the (edge lit) LED is £1300
They are the exact same in every way except from the backlighting (im not bothered about thickness)
is it worth paying £500 for LED backlighting ??? (ps it will save about £100 in electricity bills over 10 years)?

Sony use to be a good brand on tvs. In the last several years they have fallen in the quality and reliability. There customer service support center are not very helpful when you do need assistance. Panasonic is the top brand in quality and reliability along with the best customer service support center. Panasonic is also producing LCD tvs now. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs. You will notice that they have a tv recommended in each price category of entry level to the high end. While no other manufacturer can claim. If you read yahoo questions, you will also notice that 95% of tv problems come from LCD/LED tvs and 95% of those are from off brands. You are the one going to be using the tv, get what appeals to you and your eyes. Hope this will help you out
