Is there that big of a difference in LCD and LED tvs?

Junior G

I found these two great tvs.
One LED http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Philips+-+40%22+Class+/+1080p+/+120Hz+/+LED-LCD+HDTV/1419214.p?id=1218256957773&skuId=1419214

The other LCD http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Philips+-+40%22+Class+/+1080p+/+120Hz+/+LED-LCD+HDTV/1419214.p?id=1218256957773&skuId=1419214

They are the same size and refresh rate but the LCD is $100 cheaper.

I also found another LCD that is 2'' bigger and is cheaper but it's an LG

THEN there's this baby that would be perfect but the brand is what keeps me away. Is it a good buy?

Answer
True LED TVs are very expensive at the moment ($5000+).

In this context, you are looking at an LCD TV with an LED back light as opposed to the traditional Cold Cathode Fluorescent (CCF) back lights.

So, both are LCD TV, the only difference is the light source in back of the LCD. The LEDs tend to give a purer white light. Some people can see the difference. Personally, in a stand alone situation, I am hard pressed to tell the difference. So, if you are not going to have two of them side by side in your living room . . .

Difference between LED LCD TVS AND LED TVS?

I went to walmart.com and saw that under the tv category their as a LED-LCD SECTION WITH 40 tvs and a LED section with 146 tvs. I want to know whats the difference isnt a LED LCD tv just a led with out adding the LCD or are they two different categories that can be added to the whole plasma, LCD, LED, CRT TV equation.

Answer
I looked over walmart.com in the TV section and couldn't find the categories laid out as you've described. But in any case, with the exception of certain types of purely LED sets that are still in development, there are no "LED" sets that are not, in fact, just LCD sets with LED backlighting. Anything you buy at Walmart, so far, is going to be an LCD-LED, meaning an LCD display with the LED backlight.

Some day we'll be seeing OLED sets--a pure LED display--but that's well down the road, as the technology needs a lot of refinement before it will be commercially acceptable.
