Why shouldnt ICC ban Pakistan cricket for bringing the cricket game into disrepute?

I am sure most people from Pakistan will agree....something drastic should be done! This keeps on happening. How will we ever know what is genuine and what is not?

Initially I did not take your question seriously because of whatever knowledge I had of the Britishers falsely implicating Asians into such scandals. But after seeing the TV footage, I was shocked. However, I believe the whole matter should be thoroughly investigated both by Pakistan cricket Board for involvement of the cricketers as well as by the Government of India for involvement of the Indian bookies. Whoever are found guilty should be severely dealt with as this involves the prestige of the nations.

I recall two instances of accusations on prominent Indians in London. One is a well known case involving Ms. Nargis Dutt, wife of highly respected Late Indian MP, Mr. Sunil Dutt. She was accused of a theft from a store in Britain. It used to be often reported in the newspapers. Those days TV was not there. I recall having read a letter to the editor by Ms Nargis Dutt how agrieved she was for this accusation which was false and was being often reported. It was a long letter and though I do not remember its exact contents, I had the feeling of it being pure truth.

Another instance was with an opening Indian batsman who was in the Indian cricket team led by Mr.Ajit Wadekar in which Mr. Bishen Singh Bedi was the vice-captain. He was also accused of theft of a pair of stocks from a store and penalised by small causes court. In the match that followed, he had amassed more than 80 runs as an opener. AS he was working in the same department where I was employed in a Tata concern, we, some of his colleagues, took him to a restaurant and asked his clarification on the incident. He pleaded not guilty saying that all that he had purchased was in the basket and he just did not bother to check if the lady at the billing counter counted all items. He paid the bill trusting it to be correct and later at the exit, he was stopped and his bill was checked with the items and asked to explain why there was no mention of the pair of socks in it. Since he could not explain it, it was treated as a theft and was taken to the court and fined. We enquired with him why he did not fight his case if he was not at fault. His contention was that in the first place, in the small causes court, it is quite difficult to defend and the judge just keeps on doubling the fine if you disagree. If he is lucky, he may be allowed to go to the higher court. But even in that case, he would be required to stay back in England to fight his case at his cost that he could not have afforded. So as advised by his lawyer, he thought it practical to just pay the small fine and forget about it. The same team was invited for dinner by the Indian ambassador, Mr. B. K. Nehru, in their honour. They reached late for the dinner because of traffic jam. Mr. Nehru was angry and scolded the team in presence of the guests even without asking the cause of late arrival. Mr. Wadekar was too humble a person to face this embarassing situation. But Mr. Bedi was not the one to tolerate the high-handedness of the stateman. He advised Mr. Wadekar to return back to the hotel without participation in the dinner. Finally, the matter was settled but with bitterness in the minds of the cricketers. In fact, the incident of theft was also at the back of Mr. Nehru's irritation.

Now, I narrate my own incident in USA. It was my first trip and I had gone to a mall where I asked my son to buy a small paper pad which I needed to solve math problems when I am at home. He did it at a cost of $ 2/- This was lying at the bottom of the basket and the lady on the billing counter did not see it and did not count. Normally, people are not checked at the gate, but that day we were checked and this error was found. Recalling my colleague's experience in UK, I felt that this might cause a problem for me. But the lady who checked and found it realised the possibility of the error and just politely asked us to make the payment and did not make an issue of it. I do not know what would have happened to me if it happened in London. I advised my son that day to always check to ensure that all items bought are paid for.

Of course, these instances are not cited to prove that the cricketers and bookies involved may be innocent, but if proved guilty, they should be severely dealt with for tarnishing the image of the countries they represent.
