a friend who works for sony told me that images produced by a classic CRT TV have better contrast and better color than those produced by an LCD TV. The only drawbacks are that a CRT generates more heat, consumes more power, eats up more space, and has something called a 'pump effect' where bright areas of the display appear to be bigger than dark areas. Is this true? Does a CRT produce better colors and contrasts compared to LCD?

Answer
What they don't say is that CRT technology can't produce the same higher resolutions (well it can but it's not available on the market) as LCD, Plasma & the LCD hybrid, LED.

And Sony has always had a washed out color palette in their LCD TVs. Not all brands have that. Actually plasma has a warmer, more natural color palette with truer blacks and it able to maintain textures better than LCD.

I do sales demos of products in places like Best Buy. Last year when I was doing Panasonic plasma demos, the store had a large Panasonic plasma (58"), a Toshiba LCD (55") and a similar sized Sony all displayed together. The Sony looked washed out and sick compared to the other two. Sales associates even admitted to trying to make it "look" better by changing the picture settings and it just was not the same vivid, colorful picture that was being displayed by the other two units.

Since friend works for almighty Sony, I'd take everything with about 10 pounds of salt that he says regarding electronics. Don't get me wrong, Sony makes and has made some great stuff but their TVs are not one of them. The technology is there but the end result that the consumer is looking at (picture quality, brilliance, great color, dark blacks) is just not there. More people buy a TV buy how it looks in the store.
