On yahoo answers, I see people talking about Candlejack and then their question ends in the middle of a word. Example;

And the answer will end the same way, if they use the word candlejack.

Why are so many kids on Yahoo asking if fantasy creatures are real?

I thought even 5 and 6 year olds could distinguish between reality and fiction. But looking at Yahoo answers, lots of kids seem to be asking if unicorns, fairies, vampires, mermaids, dragons and so forth are real (-- just check out the Mythology and Foklore category).

I've been wondering whether or not it has something to do with the rise in children's fantasy fiction. The phenomenal success of Harry Potter has led to a huge resurgence in stories involving wizards, and people such as Darren Shan and Christopher Paolini have had rising success with stories involving dragons and demons. Also, children believe what they see on TV and in films - and with the increasing skills in CGI and special effects, all of these creatures are appearing more and more real to them each time they are seen.
Children want to believe they are real because they want to be the people in the stories. I remember loving Enid Blyton's stories as a child, and wanting to meet fairies and elves (don't know how keen I'd have been on demons at the time!). People retain a belief in mythological figures because they feel it enriches their lives, and this belief usually begins in childhood - with the classic belief in Santa's ability to travel the whole world in just one night.
