Like why does he have 4 wives? Is this even legal? Someone just please explain.. Im so confused with this show! Thanks!

Kody Brown has 4 wives and 17 children because he believes it's God's will in general, and in particular gives all of them a better chance of living together forever in the Celestial Kingdom. In other words, he's a fundamentalist Latter-day Saint, aka a Mormon patriarch who doesn't accept the rulings of the official LDS Church that buys all those TV ads.
No, technically it's not legal. But quite possibly neither is your having sex w/ your unmarried boyfriend (it varies by state)--or worse yet, your BF who's married to somebody else (again, varies by state)--and IF you did, you wouldn't expect to be arrested, would you?
Out here in the West, w/ its Mormon tradition, most of the time our attorneys general have LOTS of better things to do than prosecute people who are doing no harm to anyone. In this case, all the publicity led authorities to act differently, and foolishly. They finally got bright--unlike a hundred years ago, the public overwhelmingly doesn't care, after all--and dropped the case against the Browns. But fortunately for personal freedoms, the Browns' case against THEM is still active.
